£10m Celtic star to complete Arsenal defence?

If the Arsenal transfer rumours of this week are to be trusted, the Gunners were beaten to one of our main defensive transfer targets by the Italian Serie A club Roma. The player in question was the Greece international centre back Kostas Manolas and then we were linked with his international colleague Sokratis.

But having been drawn against his current club Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League group stage, that transfer looks pretty unlikely to me. So Arsenal still need a centre back, even though young Calum Chambers’ first few games as a Gunner suggest that the 19-year old could become a real rock at the heart of our defence in the future.

Now, according to a Daily Star report, Arsene Wenger may have found his man north of the border, in the shape of the Dutch centre back Virgil van Dijk.

The 23-year old has reaaly flourished since joining Celtic last summer and the Scottish champions’ failure to make it into the UCL draw has caused van Dijk to want to move on to bigger and better things. And the paper thinks that a bid of around £10 million would be enough to bring the Dutchman to north London.

At 6ft 4in, van Dijk certainly has plenty of physical presence, but he is quick and talented as well and is still learning his trade, so would not baulk at having to sit on the bench while Mertesacker and Koscielny started most of our games.

I like the idea of this transfer, how about you guys?

    1. Why? Yes I would be absolutely delighted if we were to get Falcao but 20 mil for one season is a ton of money. Arsenal is not in the same league financial wise as city. But I do hope that he has a surprise left for us…

      1. You do know City was fined by FFP for overspending, we can copeat with any team in the world with buying players

SO PLS PEOPLE STOP THINKING WE CAN NOT COPEAT WIT OTHER TEAMS

          1. Tinda2 you sad case are you training to be teacher when you grow up?? For your information I speak fluent in four languages so exuse me for my spelling.

      2. it isn’t really any different to buying him outright and only getting him playing at top level for 3 seasons… he is already 29?

    2. dont believe the City rumours. Aguero, Jovetic, Dzeko, Negredo. Even with Negredo injured, 3 top strikers, they have no need for Falcao. And is this a caughtoffside rumour cause thats the only place ive seen it>_>

    3. Won’t believe it until I see it official. A lot of reputed journalists are claiming Falcao’s agent is trying to get his client a new club but without a big dent on his client reported 300k pound/week wage. At 28 and spent more than half of last season injured and still command a transfer of 40M beside his riddiculous wage, no responsible manager will buy him.

  1. I’m never keen on players from Celtic. I’m sure he’s a star in the SPL… But the EPL is different gear. I’m not saying he’s not up to it, I ain’t seen the kid play. Probably BS anyway.

    1. @cardo87
I always thought that he was too good for Celtic to be honest. The thing I’m not sold on is, as soon a Hoops got knocked out of CL, he wanted out. He’s only been there a “hot minute”…

      1. Yeah fair one mate. Like I say I ain’t seen him play so the jury is out for me. Let’s see what happens.

  2. If he is fine with not starting until he proves himself (so he needs to have a desire to compete) he should be adequate as a backup CB.

      1. I haven’t seen him play properly but winning clubs tend to instil a winning mentality in their players, add that to his size and pace and what I have seen of his technical ability he looks good.

People who say he isn’t world class need to keep in mind that Kos and Mert aren’t going to be benched unless they suddenly change from brilliant to bad (mertesacker doesn’t use pace so I can’t see that happening for quite a while and Kos is only getting better).

Him and another very good signing and i’m very satisfied with the summer.

  3. Costa out for a minimum of 4-6 weeks. Meaning he will not be playing today. Hoping for a gaint killing today.

ManC s vs Stoke. Hope Shawcross is in the mood today.

Anyone think ManU can cause a upset by beating Burnley? I mean, clearly this is a six pointer in a relegation battle.
    1 point from 2 games.
    19 points from 38 games.
    Relegated.

        1. OT: “Madrid in advance talks to sign Falcao”, from the reliable source L’equip.
This means, if they’re getting him, wenger is going for Benzema.

          1. Peg for benzema I’d more likely but at least at arsenal he will keep Olivier as his back up for both club and country

  4. just watching di maria debut for manure and MAN DID REAL LOSE THEIR PRECIOUS GEM!! he’s gonna be great in EPL!! arsenal needs a player like him SOO BAD :/

    1. RM are silly to let him go. Rodriguez isn’t a wide player and they’re trying to play him on the wings. Di Maria offers pace and energy. In my opinion, Madrid should have gone for either Kroos or Rodriguez but not both.

      1. It’s weird to think that, in the space of just over a year, Madrid have managed to sell Higuain, Ozil, di Maria and Alonso.

  5. While I will wait until Tuesday to air my views on Wenger I find it a bit strange that our club with its increased financial fire power is waiting yet again to complete last minute buys.

    1. We spend 66 mil already. While i admit we need reinforcements i think its fair enough to say this window has been better than the last with better players.

  6. arsenal really seems keen on carvalho he must be VERY good if arsene is happy to spend 30m on a kid, let’s get it done

    1. not possible, he signed a contract extension with PSV about a week ago. Unless we are completely overpaying for him, its probably false. what is your source?

  7. How do you pronounce his name? I hope the “j” is not silent. 🙁

I remember there used to be a premier league player called asswind or something. That was worse though. I don’t want any embarrassing names for our rivals to make fun of us.
