First choice central defenders the key for Arsenal v Besiktas

He may not have quite been at his best after only returning to Arsenal training around a week ago, but Per Mertesacker’s 90 minutes against Everton at Goodison Park could prove to be very important for the Gunners in the season ahead.

Because it means that Arsene Wenger should have no worries about starting the Champions League game on Wednesday with the German giant alongside his main defensive partner Laurent Koscielny. The France international may have picked up a little knock last week, which was why Wenger left him out on Saturday, but he was on the bench and so should be fine to face the Turkish team Besiktas.

And with the scores delicately poised at 0-0, it is really important for Arsenal to be defensively solid. After all, a score draw would see us go out, so having the clean sheet specialists back in the centre of defence is great news for Arsenal.

Also, having that security at the back that BFG and the Boss bring will give the other Arsenal players the perfect platform to do what they do best, create chances, control the game and score goals. Demba Ba is likely to be their main goal threat and the former Chelsea man needs to be carefully marshalled, and who better to do that than Arsenal’s main men?

  1. Shouts can be loud for Mert-Kos partnership. However, I believe Chambers can still pair with Kos in this particular game and do perfectly well. Its solely down to the Manager anyway.

We are pleading to AW again, sign necessary personnels for our squad, make us stronger and five yourself some good rest. We need a midfielder who can take things upon himself in the middle of the park.

  2. why do we always have to arrive at a situation that we do not have enough players and have to make panic purchase………???????

  3. Another article that states the obvious…

The issue is that Wenger gave the Germans an full holiday when they should have been preparing for the PL.
Other players across Europe including German WC winners came back to their clubs and were ready for the kick off, Arsenal have been left unprepared yet again!
What is it with the constant state of unpreparedness this club finds itself in with both transfers and player fitness?

      1. oh cme on rock,
we re in the same ship,
i always wanted a new striker, i just dint agree when u say giroud is bad, he is a B plus as you stated once and having no striker as he s for besiktas is bad news for all of us,
i wish we d get cavani, as said several times, but even if we sign soneonenow for the game he wont be ready

  4. I would still go for the chambers and Kos combination, Mert is still not ready, save him for sunday, i hoping Sanogo is ok to play, i think he will have a better game , with campbell on the right and sanchez/ox on the left, why Besiktas loved coming down our right side i think campbell is better suited to attack from that position and defends better than sanchez,, behind the striker i feel Cazorla should be given that position and the license to roam. Now my pairing for DM would be Flamini and the one and only Diaby, i think he could dominate in this game.

Wilshere and Ozil should watch from the bench, but knowing wenger he always sacrifice the team for wilshere, give them the last 20 minutes to sharpen up for sunday, but we can not afford any week links for wednesday

  5. Szcz Mertz Kos Debuchi and
Monreal make a solid back 5.
The back 5 anchored the team all last season
while the midfield changed every game
because of injuries. Chambers at DM perhaps
or on the bench as he covers 3 positions.

  6. Wenger must enjoy skating on thin ice, well I bloody don’t.
3 games in and 3 players injured when we actually needed. 3 more players to start with.Anybody surprised? Not me.

  7. Injured.
    Ospina Arteta Diaby
    Giroud Ryo Gibbs Walcott.
    Sanogo injury prone.
    Ramsey suspended.
    Podolski not playing because
of not wanting to be cup tied.
    Coquelin not good enough.
    Gnabry not wanted.
Ox and Ozil not yet fully fit.
Campbell and Sanchez new to EPL.
    Rosicky hardly used.
    Wilshere battling.
    Cazorla played out of position.
    Apart from that the team
    is in great nick 🙂

    1. Carzola has been playing out of position since he was at Malaga…..Pellegrini keeps playing him at the wings instead of ACM position

  8. The combo of either Merts/Koscielny or Chambers/Koscielny will do the job. What’s more important is who the MF players will be and who the striker/s will be. We need to score goals! Did you see the Man City-Liverpool game last night? Our twinkle-toed and pussyfooting attacks are pathetic! At least when Sanogo and Campbell were playing up front during the Emirates Cup, there were a few shots at goal!!
