AC Milan v Arsenal Player Ratings – Great all-round performance

Arsenal confounded everyone (and probably themselves!) by playing a peach of a game at the San Siro last night. I can’t really fault anyone too much after slating them in the last three games, so here are my ratings:

Ospina 6
Yet another clean sheet for Ospina (don’t tell Cech!) but he still didn’t look very comfortable, especially on corners and crosses.

Chambers 7
It would appear that regular games are giving the youngster more confidence. Even got far enough forward to test the Milan keeper!

Mustafi 7
It is amazing how wildly unpredictable our defence can be, but another top class game from Mustai after many previous nightmares.

Koscielny 8
Even Koscielny looked rejuvenated last night. Again, I have no complaints except to ask why he was so bad before?

Kolasinac 7
Played very well until we lost him to injury, but good to see AMN back in the team too.

Ramsey 8
Ramsey was our engine room and looked far more composed than Wilshere did at the weekend. The rest must have done him good.

Xhaka 7
Poor AC Milan making all our previous flops look good! I have a feeling we are going to have a great run in but just fail to make top Four if we keep playing like this..

Wilshere 5
Definitely overshadowed by Ramsey. Not making quite the impact we expected.

Mkhitaryan 8
Top class wing play. Great goal but could have easily been three. They will come….

Ozil 8
Back to his best at last. must admit I was getting worried….

Welbeck 6
he was trying very hard, but for some reason I just never imagine him scoring. But I’d rather Welbeck than Iwobi right now

Subs:

Maitland-Niles 7
Great to see him back. Good solid performance in his given time

Holding 6
Even Holding looked tight in crowded final defence.

  1. Consistency is out problem, just forget about top four, the only way to get back to the UCL, is to win the europa, athletico will be our biggest problem..

  2. Ozil faded in 2nd half and was not tracking the runners. At least this time Wenger showed the balls to sub him.

Chambers is more technical than Bellerin but pace is a must for full backs.

    1. Good observation and Chambers is not a youngster anymore, since he is already 23 years old. He has to step up soon, otherwise Arsenal would get another CB for the next season

Waiting for Maitland-Niles’ performance in the upcoming Watford and Milan matches. Nelson looked more promising than him, because Nelson is an attacker, but Maitland-Niles responded well by improving his game tremendously

  3. good rating, wilshere i think should pull his socks up,and stop falling over every time he gets a little push, some times they only have to breath on him and he falls, instead of sitting on his arse when he doesent get a free kick he just sitz there instead of getting up and carry on playing.

    1. I liked how Wilshere and Ramsey managed to organize themselves in that match

When Milan were having goal kicks, Wilshere and Welbeck pressed Milan’s defenders, while Ramsey stayed back to anticipate. Then while Ramsey was moving forward to attack, Wilshere stayed behind to cover for him

Without Ramsey, Arsenal lost a hardworking and mobile midfielder that can pressurize the opponents constantly

  4. I have to agree….
I don’t rate Chambers, but thought even he had a good game ?
I thought Welbz worked hard, wonder if he’ll ever score again? And yes I’d much rather have him in the team than Iwobi!!!

    1. @ Sue, Iwobi is undeniably talented, but what the hell happened to him? He does seem able to pinch the ball away from opponents though.

      1. You can talk about his flicks only when he’s having a good game. On his bad games, you’ll want to slap him twice for every flick coz they’ll all look so bad and childish

    1. I was one f those who thought Wilshere was going to be our top man but i think his playing too up front he should drop back a bit where he is better suited ” bottom of the Diamond “

    2. wilshere is the fan favorite. ramsey has been with the team when theyve gone through bad runs while Wilshere was just injured the whole time. Now wilshere is finally in the team consistently and he’s being exposed as just good. Was never world class at any point. Had the potential but that’s it. He won’t bring Arsenal any silverware like Ramsey has.

  5. Without taking anything away from our boys they performed like they should like a top team but we have to also acknowledge that AC Milan did not hustle our players and looked very nervous first half and second half we was defending our lead so it was normal for them to have a few goes,
our passing, wining lose ball’s and 50/50’s was great but we always do well when other teams don’t hustle us and give us time on the ball, it wont be the same with the likes of Athletico Madrid

for me it was Aaron who made the difference last night and if we get Monrial back we might be OK

    1. Those chances Milan got could be converted into goals, had our opponent been Manchester City, Liverpool or Tottenham

Because of Dortmund’s and Lazio’s bad results, the next toughest opponent could be Atletico Madrid, followed by Leipzig and Dynamo Kyiv

      1. @gotanidea yea but we missed a few good chances as well it happens in a game, overall it was a comfortable win, AC will have to come to the Emirates and have to try and win which will leave them more vulnerable at the back so there could be a few goals in that game

  6. Maitland Niles has the physique, speed and technical ability to be a wonderful addition to Arsenal’s midfield. He would add much needed height and presence in the middle of the park and it would be very interesting to see him play in his natural position.

    1. I agree, he looks like a ‘proper’ footballer and has a great attitude unlike diver Dele. If he is coached properly I’m sure he will have a great future with the club.

  7. Everyone of those Arsenal players can hold their heads up high. A great performance and terrific night. Up there with the top 5 greatest European nights in our history.

  8. I don’t know what game the writer was watching to award the busy and impressive Wilshere only a five, below ALL THE OTHERS. A personal agenda, maybe? What else could possibly explain this bizarre mark? Other than that , it is so frustrating to see our team actually play like a TEAM again, now the season is in ruins. I don’t kid myself that one good performance against , frankly, a rank poor opponent, has changed anything. Before the game , I was one of those many Gooners who wanted us to lose, to oust Wenger. There were several more of my type on TalkSport this morning saying the very same, including a lady called Bev, attending since 1961, who said she would walk round the Emirates naked IF we won the Europa , so sure was she we could not win the Europa. I would offer to do the same, but I have zero intention of giving this corruptly run club a single penny more of mine , while Wenger remains. I am still virtually certain he will be sacked by May, PLEASE GOD!

    1. Question is will triumph in the Europa League that ensure CL football be enough for Mr. Wenger to survive . Arsenal are now the Cup Kings and rescue the season with a Cup but in PL they now look like also rans ?

      1. If we win the Europa Cup he will definitely see out his contract, the Board won’t have the guts to sack him. Remember, Kroenke loves him.

    2. I have reached a point where I pray for 5 losses in a row. Maybe thats the only way we could see Wenger out.

  9. Give it a reste Jon for juste a day,thé next Bad résult you can Côme up with tour negativity

    1. When you run the world, NOT before, you will have the right to stop me posting the truth, which you refuse to face. So til then, sonny, go stuff yourself!

  10. I’m still concerned about the return match at the Emirates. AC Milan will have to turn up to play to try and overturn the 2 away goals they conceded. Yes they may leave gaps at the back, but Arsenal won’t be able to be slow off the mark, because AC Milan have the potential to overturn the 2 goal deficit. Hopefully Lacazette is fit to play.

  11. You proved me wrong lads, great all-round performance. Now we need some consistency, hopefully against Watford on Sunday.

  12. Focused defence from the begining of the match gives more confidence for the midlefield to create chances and for the attack to score goals.Scoring goals the team looks more dangerous to the opponents and makes easier for us to defend…etc etc..its simple as that.
There should be a game plan with backup options (changing it during the game if needed) for every match and every opponent. This should be done by the person at the club whos called “the menager” (it is his JOB!!)
So the question stands : why we have played most of our games this season while the manager stayed at home?
