Arsenal have been linked with a move for Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema for a number of seasons now, and despite the time of the season, and the fact we signed a striker a matter of weeks ago, the reports have sprung up once again.
The Gunners completed a deal to sign La Liga striker Lucas Perez in the last week of the summer transfer window, and he managed to bag his first two goals for our club against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night.
Despite our new signing managing to get his opening goals, reports in Spain are linking us with a move to sign Karim Benzema, who we have been continually linked since before he left Lyon to join Real back in 2009.
The latest rumour claims that we are lining up a £40 Million move to sign the French striker, with the 28 year-old believed to be what is needed to take the Gunners up a level.
They also claim that despite Zinedine Zidane’s reluctance to sell, the fee would be too large to turn down, before the same report plays down the likelihood of such a move, citing their two window transfer ban as a huge blow to the move.
This move has never been on, despite Arsene Wenger openly praising him a number of years back. It is no longer feasible to believe the same old story, and their transfer ban would be a huge stumbling block in any move regardless.
Lucas is still early into his Arsenal career, and it is also way too early to be talking about lodging bids for alternatives. Let’s not forget that Danny Welbeck is also set to return from injury in December and will bring more competition to the role also.
I’m just going to write off this as pure speculation, and boredom from the Spanish press.
Do we still need Benzema? Could Perez have already shown Wenger that he is not the man needed bring them closer to their league rivals?
