Arsenal alerted to availability of Barcelona star

Now that Arsenal have sealed the deal with Theo Walcott, we can expect Arsene Wenger to do some business in the transfer market. There are a number of positions that need strengthening and extra cover, and one of those is between the goalposts, as Wenger wants some competition and cover for Wojciech Szczesny. One of the most successful keepers in Europe has just become available, coincidentally, after the 31-year old Spanish international Victor Valdes told Barcelona that he will not be renewing his contract at the club.

Valdes has released a statement, through his agent, that his decision that declares that he has made his mind up and will be moving on. With his current contract ready to expire next summer, the club will probably be looking to sell him and bring in a replacement as soon as possible. There is even talk in Spain of them trying to get Iker Casillas who has fallen out with Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid.

Earlier this season Valdes spoke to the media and mentioned wanting to experience different cultures. He has been at Barcelona since he was 10 years old and seems to want a new challenge after winning everything he could at the club, including the `Zamora` award for the best keeper in Spain five times, which is a record. He is also the most capped keeper in Barcelona history.

Some journalists have said he is overrated and has only done well because he plays for Barcelona, but The Barcelona defence are not the most solid and many keepers think he should have played much more than just 10 times for Spain. Valdes is always calm and is great with the ball at his feet. I think it is a good sign of his attitude that he wants to move out of his comfort zone, and he would probably be quite cheap, so Wenger will be very interested. If Barcelona have already got another keeper in mind then a deal could be done this month. What do you think, Gooners?

Of all the positions that need sorting in our team,GK ain’t one of them,be nice to have Valdes but i personally don’t see anything wrong with Szczesny, its the clowns in front of him causing the problems!!

He’s an average keeper in an amazing side. Casillas is miles ahead of him. Reina is better. De Gea will be better in a few more years. I’d take him as back up/competition for WS but he’s a step below the genuine top class keeper. Couldn’t hold a candle to Van Der Sar.

We need a striker and DM first. Sczcesy imo is one of the best keepers in the world. Just watch the saves he has pulled of in our last couple of games, that could have made our defeats far worse. He is the unsung hero.

Are you kidding me? Is this some joke of an article?? Victor Valdez?????????

He is a comedy goalkeeper at best! Farcelona keep the ball well, that’s the only reason why this monkey appears half decent. Don’t be fooled, like others have said he is average.

I agree that Szczesny needed the competition. But I wouldn’t think that should be our main concern. While our wing backs are good, our Center backs/ Full backs left a lot to be desired. They can’t play consistently week-in and week-out. It’s one thing loosing to a better team, but our Defenders makes one too many mistakes.
Another crucial position would be up front, a pure striker. It might not be fair to judge Girroud too porly, but if Arsenal want to succeed, they have to bring-in a quality Striker that could actually hold the ball and find the net. We haven’t brought anyone decent after Henry left, RVP is not included as he was already part of Arsenal beforehand.
