Now that Arsenal have sealed the deal with Theo Walcott, we can expect Arsene Wenger to do some business in the transfer market. There are a number of positions that need strengthening and extra cover, and one of those is between the goalposts, as Wenger wants some competition and cover for Wojciech Szczesny. One of the most successful keepers in Europe has just become available, coincidentally, after the 31-year old Spanish international Victor Valdes told Barcelona that he will not be renewing his contract at the club.
Valdes has released a statement, through his agent, that his decision that declares that he has made his mind up and will be moving on. With his current contract ready to expire next summer, the club will probably be looking to sell him and bring in a replacement as soon as possible. There is even talk in Spain of them trying to get Iker Casillas who has fallen out with Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid.
Earlier this season Valdes spoke to the media and mentioned wanting to experience different cultures. He has been at Barcelona since he was 10 years old and seems to want a new challenge after winning everything he could at the club, including the `Zamora` award for the best keeper in Spain five times, which is a record. He is also the most capped keeper in Barcelona history.
Some journalists have said he is overrated and has only done well because he plays for Barcelona, but The Barcelona defence are not the most solid and many keepers think he should have played much more than just 10 times for Spain. Valdes is always calm and is great with the ball at his feet. I think it is a good sign of his attitude that he wants to move out of his comfort zone, and he would probably be quite cheap, so Wenger will be very interested. If Barcelona have already got another keeper in mind then a deal could be done this month. What do you think, Gooners?
