Arsenal can get Bilbao star for free in summer!

Arsenal are not the only club interested in Fernando Amorebieta, but the Gunners should have a head start because they already tried to sign him in January, according to rumours. The 27-year old central defender will certainly be leaving Athletic Bilbao at the end of the season, after the Spanish club lost patience and withdrew the offer of a new contract from him.

That seems a bit like sour grapes, because the Venezuelan had already rejected the new contract, but Bilbao do operate in an unusual way sometimes. Arsenal were hoping to persuade them to sell Amorebieta last month, apparently, but they will make him see out his contract, as they will with Fernando Llorente. Their principles could have cost them a lot of money this year.

According to SkySports, Arsenal may have to compete with Liverpool, Everton, AC Milan and Barcelona to secure the talented defender’s signature, and there could be more. He is very highly regarded in Spanish football where he has played for his whole career, and his aggressive and powerful style could add real bite to the Arsenal defence.

Hopefully Arsenal’s early interest and the fact that there are three Spaniards already at the club will give us an edge when the season comes to an end. A Champions league spot will surely have some say in the matter as well. With just Mertesacker, Vermaelen and Koscielny (no squid please) as central defenders, we need at least one quality addition in the summer, probably two.

So Wenger is following the Spanish link now…

That is totally fine with me because Spanish players are good players, courageous, skilful, hard working and generally better than English players.

I just hope he will not sell the best assets we have in the team.

Better get more quality players and keep the best we have already.

Not a bad idea but I have a feeling clubs will be offering a lot more wages than us as he’s on a free. He won’t come to us for sure. He won’t get much playing time either

We don’t need him, we have Ignasi Miquel and Martin Angha as our next big thing in central defender roles. Next season we’ve already had a very strong squad. Arsavin will go but we still have Serge Gnabry, Chucks Aneke, and Thomas Eisfeld ready to step up. Chamakh, Park, and Bendtner will be replaced by Benik Afobe, Chuba Akpom, and Joel Campbell. And don’t forget we still have Ryo and Silva. So, should we still buy new players?

If Barca is in for him, surely he’d go there and play alongside Pique? I don’t know much about him. He seems good though. I would rather a defender with PL experience (Samba would have been perfect) or a defender who grew up playing in Germany like Hummels.

To be honest, I’ve heard that he’s a bit reckless in tackles as Sam pointed out (13 yellow and 3 reds!. Is be really the best candidate? May be a possibility, but if he’s so highly rated why haven’t the big clubs go about tieing him up in a pre-contract like Llorente?

im a fan of amorabieta he is agiant 6’6′. he is extremely strong and aggressive and alittle more mobile than per as he use to play left back.so he would be dominant cb we crave for.im not sure we can get him because he plays were vermaelen does so he would be back up, but forfree he abargin as only vermaelen can play left centre back in our squad it would signify a massive upgrade from squillaci n djouru and he could develop a good understanding with nacho

I like positivity but we must also look at reality

Just because a player is free in summer does not mean he will sign with Arsenal. He may seek a large salary in which case Arsenal is likely not in the running.

I want us to make a few signings in the summer. Big ones. Never heard of this guy, but if he’s good…why not?

Big priority for me is to raid Barca EVERY year of their best young talents. They can’t legally stop us taking any player aged 16/17 if we offer a nice contract.

Sick of us being Barca’s ‘training school’.

    Time to turn the tables.

We already have 3, Ignasi, Bellerin and Toral…

Barca wanted to resign Ignasi last summer…while Toral is very highly rated….

if we keep signing they might not have a chance to play…the same goes to Eisfeld and Gnabry…not unless someone leaves….

Talking about rumours that are 4 months down the line is beyond dumb. Nineteen weeks away the next transfer window and guess what, between now and then, not one transfer guessed on JustArsenal will be bought.

You are all going to be sick of it by June 30th and then it’s all going to start again. I can’t see how a story saying we are linked to a player, or could buy a player, or sign a player, or be in for a player, or competing for a signature, or tracking a player, or be in talks with a player, or a player says it’s his dream to move to Arsenal in the sumner, or a player is wanted by Arsenal, or going back to look at _____ [insert player name here], or Barcelona Ace wants move, or Real Madrid Supremo wants Arsenal move …. can be remotely interesting to even the dumbest idiot ever known.

Does [put name of any Arsenal player here] still have a role to play?

Will my toast at breakfast melt my butter too much?

Is Jack Wilshere likely to ever be Arsenal and England Captain?

The transfer window recently closed. We’re already talking about new players. I’m just focused on our current team and securing a CL spot. We have a really good chance to take 3rd place again. 5 pts off Chelsea with 13 games left is very achievable. The blues have a tough run in April. Tottenham have a tough run starting from March, albeit they’ll find it tough against a revamped Newcastle this week.

Arsenal have the better fixtures to finish, but I’m wondering how our possible progression through the FA Cup and CL will affect the team in terms of numbers and potential injuries. It’s not going to be easy, this season will be tight!

Here we go again. Have we not learned anything from rumours? Wenger will never buy the player you expect him to buy. Almost buying a player in january does not translate to getting in the summer for sure. Wenger changes his mind every second which makes the summer transfer window a million miles away from what he might do.

    @ Sam c
I’ve been a Arsenal & Athletic supporter all my life. I watch them play regulaly on T.V. and I go a few times a season to San Mames. My verdict on Amorebieta is that he’s average player that can add a bite to our defense. Good in the air, tight maker, not the quickist but has a decent long ball and throw with a powerfull long shot. His real problem stoping him being a top class player is his mentality. Picks up silly cards and get caught out a lot making errors.(He’s a dirty player) However this was a player that that showed much promise and nearly became a Spanish international in 2008, just missed out on the euros that year. Liverpool under Benitez was on the verge of signing him twice in 2007/08 only for Athletic to play hard ball. If arsene or however might be in charge next year can change his rash desicion making could be the next Marchena.

Did you guys know that the team that played for Arsenal in the last game had FOUR players signed this season? Yes Four! Thats is 40% of the outfield team when the game finished is new!

A further 3 players in that team were signed last season!

I’m really not getting where people are getting this from now.

  37. Gunner Down Under

We don’t need just another average centre back like the 3 we already have, just because we can get him for free. We need a top quality signing, one who can command the backline with authority, and get the arsenal defence earning the respect it used to have back in the days of Adams and Campbell. One who is 1st choice every week, with the otehr 3 fighting average guys fighting it out to be his support cast. That may also make the 3 we have try harder to improve and stop making the stupid mistakes we regularly see from all 3 of them.

My suggestion, time to move Wenger on, bring in Klopp, and with him Humels to command the defence. Then Klopp can also work on bringing in a top quality DCM and Centre Forward. While G is on the improve, I still think he cannot be judged until the end of the season, and we can assess how he has gone against the better teams. To date his only real success has only been against the low ranked teams, with too many misses for my liking.
