Arsenal Debate – Who to choose as our next captain?

Who should be the future Arsenal captain? by RC

Many fans believe that Mertesacker and Arteta are both no longer good enough to succeed at Arsenal. The lack of pace that the pair have has proven to cause our defence problems. The pair are very intelligent footballers, and there has been very few games without at least one of them to lead the team. If these players are sold on, not only is there an issue of replacing each of these players, but there is also the risk of losing a large amount of mental and leadership skills that they brought to the side. My personal view is with many fans that our captain and vice captain are not of a league winning standard, but the question then is, who would we make captain?

Sanchez and Chamberlain have been our best players this season, however due to their flexible roles and positions as well as their individualism it would be unwise to pick either of the two. Ramsey has captained Wales, and though he has recently upped his game, his desire to score may overcome his awareness on the pitch that he once had.

Szczesny is a loud and large character but do we cement his position in the goal and risk a loss of form that we have seen many times from the young Pole? Who would you all choose to where the arm band?

ADMIN COMMENT – Looking at the Arsenal squad as whole there is not one player that really stands out as a leader, except perhaps Laurent Koscielny. He is in the ideal position to marshall the defence, but his achilles problems may lead him to be unavailable for only half the games in the future.

Jack Wilshere has often been touted as a future captain, but he is hardly ever out of the treatment room so yet another risk. I can see Calum Chambers eventually becoming the boss, but right now he is much too young and inexperienced and needs to earn the respect of his colleagues.

This is definitely not an easy question to answer…

  1. Thus, no player looks qualified to be a captain at the moment?…….. Hehehehehehehe…… No ArsenaL captain until further notice then! …… L()L

      1. Alexis doesn’t speak English well yet, how can he marshal troops without being able to communicate?

      1. For me the question is who will regularly start…..so that excludes Walcott, Chamberlain, perhaps Ramsay as well……who has the character and experience to drive the team and kick em when they need it….Poldi (but we all know he won’t start), koz, mert (but even that’s uncertain depending on who we buy, Koz injuries and Chambers possibly playing)….Arteta and Flamini won’t be holding their positions next year….Chambers too inexperienced….Alexis too new…..Scheszny not reliable enough…actually I have no idea!!

  2. For the love of Arsenal, the game & the future despite his teething problems I choose Jack Wilshere as Arsenal’s next captain.

  3. Even if Wilshere wasn’t really in and out of the treatment room, does he really merit to be Arsenal captain? We play our best games when he isn’t on the pitch unfortunately.

    1. Wilshere is still very childish..

I think Ramsey is a good shout! He’s calm, very liked, can lead by example.

  4. If Ramsey can be more consistent, then he’s the obvious choice. If Sanchez can get his English right quickly, then he’ll be another option.

    1. I know everyone wants the star name as captain but in my opinion if (and this is a big IF) Isaac Hayden becomes a half decent footballer He’d probably be the most realistic choice of captain as he’s captained the club at every level bar the senior squad, he’s strong, English and an arsenal fan so he seems like a perfect candidate depending on whether he’s good enough.

  5. I have never been a big fan of Arteta and Mertesacker as captain/vice captain. They are not the type of leaders you would expect in a top team. They are too soft and too often at fault in their game.
I think the only player that has the appropriate attitude and level to be a clear starter is Kos.
He would be a good captain, leading by example. In the past 2 years, he has shown his class and leadership on both defensive and offensive aspects. Look how he stabilized the defense when he came back from injury: the team suddenly played right. And how many times did he score important goals (starting with the equalizer during last FA cup final) ?
He doesn’t talk a lot, but being good and reassuring his teamates is really key to ensure the team stays together.

  6. nobody is captain material, which is a problem. Either way it seems Arteta has another 1-2 seasons so pointless to think about at the moment. No way Arteta or Mert are being sold this summer either. Dont know why people would even want them sold because Wenger wouldnt buy replacements either.

    1. No doubt we would get a few injurys up front once we start losing players on that position. Look at the defence recently. Look what happened with giroud and welbeck, even sanchez was brought in because of injurys. We are better of keeping the players we have. Not loan or sell anyone without making sure we have players for that position. Take bfg arteta flamini n diaby out the squad replace with more pace strength agility stamina. Its their agility age and stamina that costs us most times. Apart from diaby hes just there to keep the physios in work and busy. I will go mad and not buy no more arsenal merchandise if arsene buys an attacking midfielder. Please just buy and replace the players mentioned with 4 pacey on the ball take no 5h1t defender/defensive midfielders. And we will be invincible once again.

  7. If Ramsey can curb his hunger for personal glory ala scoring goals to the detriment of the team,I see him making a good captain someday…

    1. i can really imagine Alexis with the armband…
besides the fact that hes the only one that really fights for the team it would elevate his goal scoring ability …(remember Suarez last year in few games? Brendah didnt gave the band to anyone else but the player who really deserved it…)
the same would go for Rambo but hes so selfish at times….
but i really think that Alexis can become a legend WITH OR WITHOUT being cpt.

  8. Just saw a “piece” on French tv about sports pundits and football knowledge.
During the program they talk about Wenger and his relations with TF1.

Wenger was not fired from Tf1, but his contract was not renewed because he asked for wages increase (the “balls” on this guy…!!), like the £8millions/year of free money (since he can win f*ck all) Arsenal are giving him are not enough…!!

  9. I think Kos and Ramsey c and vc

Eventually AR can take over c and Jack or as admin mentioned CC vc.

I think JW might think he is entitled it, just think that is how people hyped him up

  10. Szczesny is the logical choice
because he plays so many games.
Chambers too is becoming Mr reliable.
Ramsey if he avoids injury we don’t
    want another Vermaelen situation

    Szcz Club captain.
Ramsey and Chambers duel vice captains.

  11. I’ve always seen Arteta and Mertesacker as pragmatic choices that are keeping the captaincy warm until someone either grows onto the role (Wilshire or Ramsey for instance) or someone new is brought in who is already a leader and can take the armband after a year or so (Howedes for instance)

  12. In all honesty we will only have a captain if we go out and buy one, a good one that is.

Did not read one good candidate along all those comments. Actually there was one, i liked the one about Hayden hopefully if all goes well, but thats a long ways off.

Captains who lead by example are not captains. All players are capable of this, they only have to play well.

Exactly what this team is missing – men of leadership. We have been missing this for eons, what seems like. Unless we fix this i forever doubt our title chances.

Lets hope that when our younger lads age some they will gain the necessary qualities, Ox Theo Jack Hayden Aaron Gibbs Calum and co.
