Arsenal defender aiming for European glory after ‘ruthless’ performance

Arsenal defender Calum Chambers is aiming for an extended run in the Europa League this term, and admits that last night’s win has done wonders to appease his tough season thus far.

The Gunners pummeled BATE Borisov 6-0 last night to end their group qualifying campaign on a high, and will now be looking forward to the EL draw next week.

Chambers made only his third outing of the current campaign in the demolition of the Belarussian side, and was happy with his performance.

“We scored some great goals, kept it tight at the back and everybody stuck to their jobs. It was a ruthless performance,” the England international said.

“For me I’ve missed quite a lot of the start of the season through injury so I just want to get games under my belt. Obviously nights like tonight help that, so I just want to do as well as I can in every performance and prove myself.”

Chambers went onto claim that our side has a good chance of glory in Europe this term, but is weary of the threat posed by the teams dropping out of the Champions League, such as Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Leipzig.

“We have got to aim high, we know we can go very far in this competition. Nights like tonight show that. Everybody has worked really hard in the competition, so we have got to give it everything we have got and see how far we can go.

“I have looked at who we can get in the next round, there are some quality teams dropping into the competition. Whoever we get will give it our best and we all know what job we have got to do.”

Could Chambers build on his performance? Should Arsenal prioritise a Europa League title charge?

  1. Off topic but i think Cech should be dropped for Ospina for the next few games. He needs to prove that hes no1 and having his pace guaranteed each week is making him complacent

    1. I agree Cech has made one or two errors this season that has led to goals but he has also made like 7 or 8 world class saves that has kept us in games so no I wouldn’t drop him. And don’t act like Ospina is not prone to erros also..probably more so than cech.

  2. Chambers did great last night. But BATE Borisov was lacklustre and the next round’s opponents would be the real test.

I think Arsenal would have slimmer chance to win the Europa League, compared to reach the 4th position in the Premier League. Because Atletico Madrid, Napoli, Dortmund and Leipzig are waiting.

I hope Arsenal will manage to fix their problems. In the emphatic win, I saw their defense almost got caught by some quick counter-attacks again for a couple of times, because they often left only two central defenders in the back.

    1. Guy, how about you give credit to those players when they deserve it. it is always poor opposition to you when arsenal win and shit arsenal when they lose. If you really know so much about football and players qualities why are you are. You should either be a coach or a scout. To think that all those club you mentioned are better than arsenal with the way they had performed in cl group stage and domestically shows you know nothing about football. No disrespect.

    2. The only team that should be a challenge to us is Atletico Madrid and Napoli. Dortmund is not the same team they used to be. They even performing badly in their own league. And we saw how Spurs easily dispatched them. They couldn’t even beat Apoel..on two occasions!

    3. I am sorry but I saw no defensive problems.I wonder what You would have typed if we were to lose or even draw tonight. I am sorry but I hvae never seen an Arsenal fan complain when we win and complain when we lose. If we win this weekend against Southampton are you going to complain again? “oh we beat southampton but we concede two shots on goal, we are pathetic”! I am sure that is something you will type come this weekend.

  3. I like Chambers and fell he never got a real chance and we paid a lot of money for him at the time. He also should get more PL minutes just like Wilshire.

    1. Totally agree with you. He never got a chance at CB. He did play for a short bit at RB, but we all know what happened at Swansea against Montero, and then he was replaced by Bellerin. So yeah I think he deserves another chance. i would like to see him be the back up behind Koscielny and Mustafi.
