Arsenal earn hard-fought win to ensure winning Wenger send-off

Arsenal limped over the line to win their final match under the guidance of Arsene Wenger today, with Huddersfield refusing to roll over despite having little to play for.

The Gunners started the game poorly with the hosts giving everything they could to retain the ball chasing everything and giving us little room manoeuvre. Despite a top effort by the Terriers, who earned their Premier League status in midweek by denying last season’s champions Chelsea a win, they found themselves behind.

Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang combined in the opposition box once again to add to their new flourishing partnership, with the Frenchman cutting the ball across to the box to his poaching attacker.

There wasn’t much else to talk about in the opening half really, apart from a couple of solo efforts from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and of course the applause all around the stadium in the 22nd minute for Arsene Wenger’s extended spell in charge of the club, but the result was also a gift in itself.

The second-half wasn’t much different to the first, with the hosts continuing to play impressively, but they couldn’t manage to get the ball over the line. They did look like they had scraped a point in the dying minutes of the match only for David Ospina to hold the ball on the line, and I partially feel like they would have deserved the point for their performance.

On watching the game you would have to consider ourselves lucky to have walked away with all three points, and had the result had meant anything for us I feel that the points wouldn’t have all gone our way, but we can now celebrate the good times spent following the illustrious Frenchman, and it is time to pay our respects.

Is this the end of long-term managerial roles? What was Wenger’s greatest tactical masterclass?

  1. Goodbye and thank you very much Wenger

Please bring Ozil with you and do not take Maitland-Niles to your new club

        1. I think he will go for Xhaka, Iwobi, and Ramsey.

He’ll only get Iwobi, but Xhaka would be even better for us. 😀

          1. Yes, for Wenger Xaka and Ramsey are world class.
            Bye Bye Wenger!

            ps
If Ozil is from UK he would be prised like a God on this forum

            1. Maks not wrong Maks easy scape goat. 2nd most tackles from either side vs Atelico (didn’t turn up.)

            2. Maks did you know that aubameyang’s goal was provided by aaron ramsey.

ramsey has more goals and assists than ozil.wilshere,xhaka.

and all this hate from people like you.

i really can’t wait for next season when we get a new manager…
irregardless of who it is..ramsey will be central to his plans.

best box to box midfielder in the premier league.
just needs a good coach like jardim or allegri who tame him not to make unnessary runs forwad.

don’t be suprised if the new manager gives ramsey the captaincy and a free role.

              3 months away.

              1. Yes, Ramsey is one of top 3 box-to-box midfielders in the Prem.

The problem: loads of managers don’t use this position regularly because of defensive issues. Most famous example: Guardiola.
We’ll just have to see which manager we’ll get.

What riles me is the retarded British media who mention Rodgers, Benitez, Vieira, or Arteta, yet fail to mention better foreign based options, such as Jardim, Nagelsmann, or Marseille’s Garcia.

  2. Honestly not deserved win, but i take it. And i hade so much respect for Huds fans. However what they did in the end was bad.
I think Mikhy was super wasteful today if that was Iwobi,Xhaka or Ozil everybody would demand his had haha. Holding had shocking moments.
Thank you Ospina for the save and glad for Auba goal.Ramsey not sure if he fits as captain, but he also did well today.
Iwobi,Xhaka, Mustafi, Kola were decent. Bellerin tried.
I think we should have few yellow cards.

    1. 100% with you on that the Players in the club at the minute just aren’t good enough. Let’s start at the back Hector is a lightweight who gets brushed off the ball by a small breeze it’s embarrassing he calls himself a defender if we could get dembele for him do it and buy another rb. Mustafi will never be good enough he’s absolute rubbish who can’t take responsibility for his mistakes and loves to moan at his own players when he was the one who made the mistake he’s a joke. Rob holding is nowhere near good enough he’s a bit small and if your smaller you better be fast but he’s neither. Kolasinac is great going forward and half decent defender nothing special but will do a job for about 60 mins then that physique affects his stamina. Kosceilny is world class on his day but has been carrying that injury for years and now look. Unfortunately he will never be the same. Monreal is 33 for a left back that’s ancient also slow. Chambers Could be good but we never see it he’s got the attributes to be a good cb but he wants to be a slow rb which won’t work in the epl. Konstantinos already looks better then Mustafa, holding and chambers bar his red card the other day he’s been good the best in the air already and looks like he’s a fighter something arsenal need instead of Mustafa moaning every time he near the ref smh. And that’s just the defenders don’t get me started on the rest of them underachievers. Most disappointing season that I’ve seen not that we lost sometimes u just have those days but all 2018 away games till now ?????

  3. Finally.
The selfish old man is going.
    Ten years too late.
He leaves the team in a mess.
But at last we have our Arsenal back

    1. You sure we have our Arsenal back? What if Rodgers, Howe, Benitez or Dyche become Arsenal’s next manager?

      1. Yes, I Agree, if they bring Artetas and Rodgers and people like that we are still fracked!

    2. Back from what ? Do you have some future visions. It can always be worse you know. Lets hope for best however until i will see our game style and fighting spirit next season Arsenal is not back.

    3. barryglik , i could not agree more with you , well said. i have not been on here since that man was awarded another 2 year contract extension. now we breathe a sigh of relief. i have not come in here to bash that man, no , some respect must be given for what he achieved in the first half of his tenure as manager. but , very sadly, that does not make up for the 12 years of hell we had to endure with him at the helm. thats all i will say about him, good riddance. now , let all arsenal fans unite behind our team and especially our new manager, whoever it turns out he will be . we have had enough infighting , especially on this fine site. we were divided , each side understanding that they were the right side , fair enough .let us once again do things the arsenal way from now . a heavy cloud has departed the emirates, it is now very important for one and all arsenal fans to enjoy football once again. do you remember enjoying football , it was a long time ago , as far as i am concerned.heres looking forward to a very exciting chapter in our clubs history , be happy guys.

      1. I really chuckle when I read comments like ger burkes.
So he hasn’t been on the site since Arsenal beat Chelsea in the cup final because Wenger was awarded a two year contract.
Well blow me down, we have a real hardcore supporter here then.
Someone who supports his CLUB no matter what and through thick and thin.
Then he says “let all Arsenal fans unite behind our team”,….OK then, I assume that means you won’t grace us with your presence for another period of time then snowflake, especially if the CLUB make a decision you don’t like?

        1. ADMN COMMENT.
Ger you may have been away for s year but the rules haven’t changed. Any personal abuse and you will be moderated. You have been warned….

          1. Yer berk,
Don’t worry, I read your comments thoroughly, just as I have read your reply to mine.
Yes, it’s real good to have you back with your highly intelligent and thought provoking comments.
I hope to learn a lot from your posts.
You have been so sadly missed as a true CLUB supporter.
Just hope that the new manager is the one you want, otherwise we will lose you as a real CLUB supporter yet again.
By the way,as I have never had the experience and you obviously have (I mean that quite sincerely) can you tell me what position to adopt?
            Okay Chucky baby boy.

          2. thank you admin for pointing that particular rule to me . it is good to see that you are still as unbiased as usual. that is the main reason i missed this page , everybody gets treated the exact same way , regardless of who they are . i look forward to guided by your esteemed self in the days, weeks, months and years to come . no personal abuse, i apologise to ken if i abused him personally .now lets have the same for everybody, well done boss.

    4. As if you have become the Chairman of the board who has just succeeded in influencing a change in transfer policy, change in contracts negotiations and a change in transfer budget. Dream on. S For now, everyone is joining the bandwagon without having a clue. omeday some of you will realize the crux of the matter.

      1. Oh yeah and of you are the voice of reason and knowledge are you not?
Wenger is now gone.He won’t be coming back. After 22 years he has left us with a squad of players nowhere near the standard he inherited.Sixth place.Europa Cup.
        Things WILL BE BETTER.

        1. Phil,
It was you who said we only need a couple of players and a new manager to guide the club forward again, so the squad can’t be that bad surely?
By the way, the squad he inherited had won what exactly?
No fa cup since 1993 and no league trophy since 1989, a barren period that Wenger ended in his first year with his managerial skills.
The players he “inherited” wax lyrical about the mans abilities and that for him must be the ultimate accolade, wouldn’t you agree?
Still, as you say, his time is up and we look forward to appointing another manager.
His achievements will always be there for everyone to see and respect.

          1. Ken – a few players not a couple. And Wenger added Vieira Petit Overmars and Anelka. The foundations were in place.Four great players who made a difference but what a GK and Defence he inherited.

            1. Vieira was Wenger picked but signed by AFC to get Wenger if I am not mistaken, kinda like a “you want me? Buy Vieira then let’s talk”.

Wenger did inherit a great def, he will be leaving us with some great attacking players.

I also don’t want to knock our young CBs either, I do feel that they have shown the potential and with the right manager then they could do a fantastic job.

Chambers and Mavrop done well, Chambers and Holding have done well.
              Mavrop and Holding looked dodgy…
1 CB to lead the def and it could be like adding Sol Campbell to Toure/Cole/Lauren…

            2. Phil,
It will be interesting to see just how many players are signed in the close season, I would like to see three to improve the backbone of the team (GK_CB_DM). Then I think the squad will be ready to challenge again.
We have always agreed on the fantastic defence inherited, not from Rioch, but Graham.
I wonder what the stats would provide if asked about that defence versus Wengers Invincibles? Such a hard call to make I would suggest.
Hopefully we will get an announcement tomorrow, but not holding my breath!

              1. Don’t forget Dennis Bergkamp, Ian Wright, Ray Parlour, Paul Merson, and David Platt.

    5. Too early to say that. just one poblem is gone. is the board gonna support the new coach to express himself? is the board gonna hire the right man for the job? when are we gonna be successful?short term 2/3 years or too long?

    6. 10 years? get back to me in 10 years, delusional the hardcore wob’s are. It’s insane. He failed 2 years and given his age he should and has gonr nothing else he over-achieved the other 8 but delusional is delusional (like liverpool shouldn’t be the 4th team on history or money before wenger.)

      1. Wow, what a post, I have read it four times and still have absolutely no idea what you are trying to say, might be an idea to read it yourself before hitting the ‘post comment’ button in future ?

  4. Did we just win an away game!! Lol
Onwards and upwards for next season 🙂

Special mention to city for hitting 100 points and beating spurs record for number of games won in a season.

I heard someone saying years ago West ham got relegated on 43 points but today 10th place was 44 so what a rubbish quality league we have!, eh? Doh!

It’s not that it’s rubbish it’s just 1 tea has stolen all the points this year!

        1. Not us you INATTENTIVE man. I was clearly referring to Man City if you read the final comment in the post I was answering more carefully. I should not NEED to explain this!

          1. Jon,
Now that the arguments about A.W. are no longer relevant, I can start to enjoy SOME of your put downs and this one had me in stitches.
Nearly as good as your Hitler one!!!
Have you seen the news coming out of City from Pep regarding Arteta?
I really feel so sorry for the man himself, but it seems the rumours are gaining pace!

  5. Granit xhaka played well today, he’s slowly starting to take control and prove people wrong. He starts most of our attacks from deep.

    1. Please mate unfortunately souness was right xhakas like Charlie Adam slow as they come and athletically just can’t get round the pitch like a Kante or anyone else in a midfield position. He’s rubbish and a waste of 35million when we’ve got Maitland niles smh.

    2. What a crock of ? class players do not “
Start to take control” after two years they stamp their authority on the game
      Worst midfielder we’ve ever purchased

    1. After final whistle they booed and tried to make some trouble on pitch like some holligans.

      1. They sang ..you wanted him gone, you wanted him gone, you two faced bas_ards you wanted him gone.

        1. And tbey were right ! So many fans of other teams can’t believe how entitled a lot of our fans feel

  6. Lots of unwanted criticism of Iwobi today. Yes he makes mistakes but he had a far better game today than Mikki. Love Mikki but he was not on it today so credit where it’s due.

  7. Ot talking about rowdy crowds I wonder if anyone saw the Wembley played national league play off earlier today between tranmere and Boreham wood?
A player got hit on the head by a glass beer bottle it looked like thrown from way up in the stand.
He played on for a while are least, ouch! Outrageous!

    1. Totally agree and I’m a Borehamwood boy, born and bred and it’s a shame on my old town.

  8. 95/96 EPL Table

    1. Man U 82
    2. New Castle 78
    3. Liverpool 71
    4. Aston Villa 63
    5. Arsenal 63
Arsen Wenger got you from 63 point after 38 games and won you trophies, invincible and a 60 seater stadium. Now he brought you back to where you belong. Get someone to take you places.

  9. my beloved Arsenal team is not going to humiliated any more bring any coach i am fine with as long as we have good players we should be just fine even Arteta i am for

  10. @sony.
‘It can always be worse’ err I suppose so but it’s going to be difficult than how poor it’s gotten.
Just a shakeup of manager and staff should help regardless of who comes in.
But I do agree take Arteta and yes it most definitely could be worse, go for someone proven who knows how to remodel a team and get them playing again then we’ll be fine at least once the players get to grips with the new managers methods, tactics etc.

  11. Thank you Arsene. The last comment of the commentator said it all. You are a legend. That can’t be changed. All the best in your future endeavor. MerciArsene!

    1. What if joins Everton, do you want him to beat us twice in the league? That’s 6 points.

  12. Amazes me how we always had the mickey ripped out of us for finishing 4th…. but because Liverpool have clinched it today it’s fine!!

        1. Sue,
Not only fourth, but also winning the cup was not a proper trophy remember?
I wonder what we will be doing on cup final day while Utd and Chelsea fans are lording it at Wembley?
Also be interesting to see if the winners of the community shield will see it as a useless piece of silverware?

    1. Atleast this time the 90 days will be worth waiting for! Best of all, no more 5+ goal pastings! I know Diego Simeone plays some negative football but if we got him 3-0 is the biggest humiliation we would ever suffer again.

  13. In
    Decent top coach
    Nagglesman
    Alegri
    Jardim

    Out Xhaka
    Mustafi
    Ospina

    Top 4 target first year

      1. Neil I know it must be difficult to understand the context of a whole sentence of 5 words, however, that’s the target for the FIRST YEAR

And we are miles off top 4 at the moment

      2. well were not going to jump from 6th to 1st. Have you seen how horrible this team is too? Oh, I see what you’re doing. Just trying to defend AW’s honor. Got it.

      3. John is just being realistic.

our target next season is the top 4.

we don’t expect the new manager to win the league in his first season.

unless if it’s allegri…i think he can get number two.
his tactics will surprise the epl.

  14. The hard work begins now. Get right manager, get transfer kitty ready. Such a shame the board is untrustworthy and a shambles and this could go in so many directions. kind of the exciting part though. COYG

  15. Just watching Sunday supplement
A Lot of writes think it’s going be Arteta
FML if that’s the case here is my prediction

Similar season similar empty seats and protests
And the heat will turn up on the board for lack of imagination. And if anyone wants him tell me why ? Not just because he’s Pepe bit*c

  16. thank you for the memories arsene
    the invincibles
    the beautiful games
    beating bayern and barcelona
beating real madrid and ac milan away
    and for the bad results
    8-2 to man utd
humilation to bayern and liverpool and chelsea and man city
this is the life and i hope the next manager is tuchel even if its difficult

  17. Surprised Wagner has nt been considers as our new coach

Huddersfield play great football, on zero budget, and play hard every week

And has a hell of a lot more experience than Arteta !!!

  18. I get amused at how some of our fans assess issues. No serious Arsenal fan should rejoice until we know who our next manager is. The situation could get worse if we appoint an unproven person as our manager. From the rumours anyone who is not Allegri, Jardin, Enrique, Ancelloti, Lowe and perhaps Vieira should not be entertained. What is all the hype about Arteta? What has he ever managed on his own? We might even wish Wenger remained if we don’t choose the next manager wisely! The example of Man U after Ferguson should guide us as It is just a few years back when Sir Alex Ferguson left Man U and left David Moyes in charge. Who can forget what happened? Do we need a similar or worse experience? That is what we are likely to get with Arteta. We should use due diligence in our search for a new manager lest it is too late to save the situation.

    1. According to you then we should cry because wenger is now gone.

we have been mediocre for the last ten years.
      where have you been.

      1. Why are you always offside? Who is crying for Wenger. If you are a student of literature I will quote you something from Shakespeare. I don’t love Wenger less but Arsenal most. That’s why I am calling for a proven manager not an upstart.

    2. Could have said it better…. for some reason I just hate the word Arteta.. could someone please tell me the reason for this?? I can’t seem to phantom why ??

  19. Yes, Arteta is inexperienced, but still not a bad choice….

There are options much worse than him…

Besides Zidane was also inexperienced when he started coaching…

Started at Real Madrid B as an assistant coach because he lacked coaching badges and was the appointed Real Madrid manager the following year…

  20. For 22 years, for 1,235 games, for 49, 49 undefeated, for 7 FA Cups, for 3 @PremierLeague titles, for two Doubles, for winning the league at Old Trafford and White Hart Lane, for Wengerball, for the Invincibles, for your total love and devotion, we want to say… #MerciArsène❤️

  21. A two year stint with Mancity and suddenly Arteta is a coach, are these so call arsenal fans, then comparing him to Zidane situation , just ridiculous.

It was because of Wenger i became an arsenal fan, the type of football arsenal played was glorious, somewhere along the way Wenger got corrupted perhaps due to the power which was given to him by the board and arsenal football suffered, but even so we still were always close to the top and at certain points probably could have won the league.

The evolution of the EPL had caught up to arsenal, the type of football, more competitive teams and last but not least, the money trains. Arsenal has been on a tight fiscal hold and it has been over the past couple years that arsenal has been showing some about of spending power.

Back to the Arteta story, if arsenal does hire Arteta, it is a signal to the fans that the the board needs a YES MAN in place, therefore the conclusion would be no major money would be invested to strengthen the squad, oo and the ZIDANE as reference should not be used, because he inherited a team called the GALATICOS not an arsenal.

To Wenger, i wish you the best and hope you still continue in football, you have made millions of people Arsenal fans and i thank you.

  22. Rejoice O ye Gunners, for the Wenger era is gone.
Rejoice for your darkness is lightened and close is your dawn.
Rejoice because the regeneration you long craved for is come.
Rejoice for you’ll soon again get Europe stormed.
Only hope the so-called board make the right choice, so that this ain’t some junk.
Therefore moan no more, get ills burnt, put disunity off, engulf yourselves with some love, and let’s in joy ride again to the top.
Rejoice O ye Gunners, once again I say rejoice!
