Arsenal FA cup review – Wenger’s Gunners blow the blues away

Well that was a fantastic way for the often criticised Arsenal to end the season, not only lifting the FA cup trophy and setting a new record as they did, but in the way they totally outclassed the new Premier League champions. We did it Gooners and we did it in some style.

A lot of the questions going into this final were about which Arsenal we would see, and you can hardly blame us, but you could not find anything to say in a negative way about any of the Arsenal boys. Fair play to Arsene Wenger, because his tactics and motivation were spot on today.

Right in Chelsea faces from the whistle was just what we needed and one Arsenal took hold they did not give Chelsea an opening. Even when our 10 man opposition got an equaliser with a lucky deflection I was not worried because the Gunners were on it.

It may have been odd but the opener fronm Alexis Sanchez was nbot only fair but it was top quality. Per Mertesacker was a beast at the back and Wenger playing him when nobody expected it was a real masterstroke. Well done Arsene. Well done Gunners.

Bob.

I said Arsenal would need a miracle to win. That wasn’t a miracle, that was just GOOD FOOTBALL. Well done gunners!

    1. Muffdiver wants change...not for arsenal...for.the vending machine, I'm thirsty as f###

      Weve Done it again
      We’ve done it againnnn

      Arsenal fc

      We’ve done it again!!!!!!

      YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

    2. gotanidea

Next season, Arsenal just needs the following players to dictate the tempo and dominate the midfield area:
      – A world class midfielder (with Iniesta’s level of ball control, passing and vision)
      – A striker (with Suarez’s predatory instinct).
      – An attacking midfielder (if Sanchez and Ozil leave, the new guy should have the similar dribbling skill like Sanchez and Neymar).

Now finding, buying and luring those players into Arsenal would be quite a task…

      1. RAA1395

This is the time to be happy and celeprate….
Let’s not say what we need for future now as we are all emotional…..For now: well done EVERYONE !

      2. Craig West

I don’t get why your comment has been soo severely thumbed down?! I agree with your assessment, I’d say the CM will have to also be combative/defensive minded in order to be able to handle the physicality of the league and to help bring balance to the midfield

    3. Carlos Da Silva

Just me that is livid with Wengers decision to start Ospina? Horrendous game from him honestly,2 saves that were straight at him, but he should never have let the goal in, and he flapped at a cross or 2.

        1. Carlos Da Silva

I know man, and I’m even a huge fan of the guy and think hes a great keeper, but Cech is just better, he should’ve been started and we would’ve had a clean sheet 100%. I’m also not even a Wenger out guy, but it was just a terrible decision from Wenger, unbelievable really.

          1. neil

Cech was injured and with 3 to 4 defenders out you would want to ensure Goalkeeper is fit at least..!! If we had lost blame Wenger… we won so praise him.. thats what real men do… they take responsibility for their words and actions !

    4. Jamaican gooner

The spuds homeground has always been our lucky charm.. League title(2004) FA Cup(2017)????

    5. Luke bratzi

I told ya that if Gibbs played we would have lost. No way would he have done what Oxy did and Monreal did a master class at left back. You need a strong committed play and the team showd that Wenger, was right in the team would get better shame it came to late. But not his fault injuries played its part. CB

  2. Arsenal_Girl

    Awesome result
    So proud of our boys
    Champions once again
Well done to them and Wenger too

    Still want Wenger Out though

    1. henry

I am with you. Congratulations to Arsenal and Arsene Wenger.
This is the perfect time and atmosphere to Wenger to leave. He may never have it again.

    2. Midkemma

Leave the Wenger Out BS to one side for today.

Let us be proud that Wenger has not only became the most successful FA Cup manager, he has done it winning a 3rd of the FA Cups he has participated in and that also includes the 9 barron years between 04/05 victory and the 13/14 victory.

      Well done Wenger.
      Well done AFC.

I hope we now build upon that. It is a title at the end of the day and we was only 1 point off UCL football, if we can keep Alexis then I hope we can improve enough over the next few months.

  3. Uzi Ozil

Arsenal should have wrapped the game in the first half..

You just don’t know the Arsenal that will turn up. Arsenal giving me all kinds of feeling you can think of since 1999.
That was a classic game !

    Mertsacker you proved me wrong..
Ramsey loves scoring the winner in FA cup final..
    Woodwork almost hunt us.

    COYG!

    1. SSM

      That was a great match.

With not so great an outcome.

Still haunted by the vision of Schmeichel blocking Bergkamp’s penalty kick.

  4. Kiko

That score line flattered Chelsea. Should have been a lot more even before the red card.

    1. RSH

Without Cahill it would’ve been one of Chelsea’s worst defeats in recent history.

  5. Jim A

Giroud to Ramsey just like a few years ago for the win. The FA cup is and always will be special! Surpassing MU makes it a huge milestone.

  6. ras911

Good lord i nearly pooped myself several times. We were incredible today, simply amazing. We’ve done it again we’ve done it agaaainnnn, Arsenal FC we ‘ve done it again!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Kiko

I must admit that was some good reffing, took balls to call that dive along with the send off.

    1. gmv8

I initially thought Anthony Taylor was against us because of the spat he had with AW, as we seemed to get yellow cards for relatively minor infringements, whereas Costa got away with all sorts of things … fouling, attempted kicking and dissent, yet he gave us the two major decisions of the match. I don’t think it was handball for AS7… it bounced of his knee onto the inside of his forearm, which he pulled back as soon as he could … it was the same as the goal against Burnley, where conventional wisdom eventually said AS7’s goal wasn’t handball, as it was ball to hand and too quick for him to know anything about it.

      1. Twig

If it was Costa that scored Sanchez’s goal, you’ll be shouting hand ball all night long, Lol

  8. Vlad

Paging Konstantin… paging Konstantin… where are you at, cockroach? Let’s see what you have to say about the game now. Oh wait, I forgot, you don’t watch our games anymore. All I can say is THAT was truly BEAUTIFUL! Why can’t we play like this every single game?! Dominated in every single aspect. Moses was an idiot for Chelsea, but that was all us, baby, as far as I’m concerned. FANTASTIC!!!

      1. JamButWhiner

Vlad’s hate for Konstantine clouds his love for the club and his objectivity.

        1. Vlad

KM’s hate for Wenger is what clouds his love for the club. In fact, I’m not sure he even cares for the club. When he stops spitting hate on JustArsenal, I’ll stop calling him out. Like I said, wait until he shows up here tomorrow talking about how we were lucky to win because of Moses, and Alexis’ goal.

          1. Jamaican gooner

He’s going to heap all praise on the players and totally ignore the tactical masterpiece which was on display.

      2. Vlad

The only one who needs to get a life is KM. No matter whether we win, draw, or lose, he always finds something negative to say. Wait, he’ll say that we only won because Moses got sent off, and we were luck that Alexis’ goal wasn’t disallowed. I’m a very patient, and a very easy going person by nature. But that POS gets on my nerves even though I don’t even know him. I hope Wenger signs a new contract extension now so that miserable SOB can go and hide under the rock from which he came from.

        1. henry

I am happy for Arsenal and Wenger too, but that doesn’t make me fail to see sense in KM’s argument. Everyone knows that Arsenal have the habit of bottling things up only to come up with late consolation.
My happiness is also with reservations since from the players comments, they seem to have played well mostly to save the manager. They should be fighting for the Arsenal badge always, Not just to save Wenger’s a**.
Anyway Vlad, you are spoiling the mood already.

    1. khangunners

Come on he has given his reasons for change. Am happy with the win but we seriously need to be serious about building our team. Lets not be fooled with the cup win we hve alot to do but lets celebrate this win first

  9. dboy

Yes! There isn’t a better time for Wenger to bow out gracefully.

    Well done Gunners!!

  10. gotanidea

Thank you Arsenal, for showing an entertaining match. Arsenal could challenge for the title next season if they keep using this formation and keeps Sanchez.

Monreal, what a defender he is. Mertesacker and Holding were very good as well.

Ozil seemed comfortable with this formation. But maybe this was his last match?

Welbeck still lacks the predator instinct, but he wreaked havoc into Chelsea’s defense. A very fine athlete.

Ramsey and Xhaka did great supressing Kante and Matic. Chelsea’s midfielders disappeared in that game.

Bellerin got better today. Chamberlain was okay as a left wingback.

    Ospina was good as well.

We might only get the FA Cup, but beating Chelsea and Manchester United this season felt so good. I think Tottenham and Manchester City are much stronger than Chelsea and they could be our main title competitors next season.

See you next season Wenger. Please buy world class midfielder and striker.

  11. John0711

    Meet MOM
    Xhakas best game yet
Every player player well, their goal was a foul on ozil
I want wenger out but In some ways I agree with what he just said two top players and we could compete
However I’m thinking 3 Griezman Verrati and Mbappe I’m not sure that’s what he means

  12. Janssen

Great result!!!! We were the better team. Bounced back well after the equaliser. Thought Mert was great.

Winning the FA Cup against the PL champions is legit.

I have said it all year I hope we manage to keep Ospina.

This would be a great way for Wenger to go out on a high befitting the earlier part of his career and his image of a legend. Will he take the opportunity?

  13. Godswill

    Where ArseOver Tit?
You said 3 – 1 to Chelsea and rebuke by responding 2- 1 Arsenal.
    What has happened?
Am an Arsenal fan. For every match I usually feel EE would win because that is what would make me happy. I can’t wish myself unhappiness even if Arsene I’d in charge.
FatBoy am waiting for your comment.

  14. Vanpayslip is good ornaments/junkies win awards in my tournaments

    Absolutely delighted.

After a horrible season this feels so good. TBH don’t care about top 4 and this feels much more if an achievement

  15. Sumant The Gooner

Both Arsene and Ozil look like it’s their last time with Arsenal during these post win celebrations. Ozil doesn’t look too happy winning and Wenger has the farewell look in his eyes.

    1. gotanidea

If no club is interested in Ozil, Arsenal might have to keep him until his contract is finished. I hope there will be another club for him, because his style doesn’t suit Arsenal very well. He will be good again in teams like Bayern or Dortmund.

I think Wenger will stay. He looked like he has got an unfinished business and it seems like he has found his solution in the new system.

  16. Galen

Hope you all remember the Xhaka ramsey Partnership. 2 worldclass players and we are good to go. But they must be worldclass. I prefer this feeling that top 4.

In the past everyone laughed at us and said Top 4 was not a trophy. Congrats to Mr Wenger. 7 FA cup wins. LEGEND LEGEND LEGEND.

    1. Jonm

Judging by the reaction of liverpool and manc to getting in the top four, I think it is a prize that all teams value very highly.

  17. greg

It was awesome to see big mert and kos holding up the prestigious fa cup together! COYG!

  18. Elliot

Wow, that’s what we want all season. Such a great performance. That game is everything you want a final to be. Mert was unreal, those long legs made some very important challanges. I thought the ox looked a little rusty but who cares, WE WON!

  19. Break-on-through

Mert is a Monster!!, gigantic performance. That was a real treat watching them snuff out Chelsea, high fives and roars made sweeter. Delighted for Wenger, the fans and players too.

  20. summerbreez

Arsenal tell a different story they win more games than Liverpool and than they put the icing on the cake by wining the FA cup and beating Chelsea truly well sending all the doubters with their banners to the silence corner Well done Arsenal

    1. ks-gunner

What did we prove today? That we can win against chelsea which we have often done before?

  21. Ignasi

    Absolutely gobsmacked.

How did that happen? Holding, BFG, Monreal at CB. WTF.

    I predicted 6-0 to Chelsea.

It could have been 9-3 Arsenal..

  22. ks-gunner

    I salute Ramsey and Merti

If Ramsey keeps on playing like this, i will be singing his name way more often, man of the match for me

Why could Arsenal not play like this before?

What Arsenal needs is deff a new striker, that i must say

  23. Sean

Have to admit did not see us winning never mind playing the way we did against the champions! Well done to all the players that busted their asses for the badge today ???

An FA CUP is a great way to end the season aftwr this one was absolutly horrible in many ways, now on to some major decisions regarding Arsene, Stan, Ozil, Ox & Alexis…. what a way to leave to be record winning manager plus your club the record holders for how many final wins! Legend in the FA CUP can walk away with some pride after all the abuse.

    1. gotanidea

If Wenger, Ozil, Sanchez and Chamberlain leave together, Arsenal would struggle like when Manchester United was left by Ferguson.

Are you ready? Only a great club can achieve the glory from bad position and limited resources. Hopefully Arsenal is one of them.

  24. raymondo

So chuffed to be so wrong. Great performances from everyone today and thoroughly deserved.

  25. GoonerKev84

Absolutely buzzing.. What a great performance from the boys.. Mertesacker was sensational, Ramsey Xhaka bossed the midfield.. First seen us win the Fa Cup back in 93 as a young fan was great then 24 years on still have that feeling I just hope we can go on and win the biggest prizes now.. Happy Gooner. COYG

  26. mark

Have to say as well, if we’d used this 3 4 3 earlier in the season, we could have given Chelsea a run for their money.

But the FA cup is a very nice end to the season.

  27. ks-gunner

The cup win was important as this will make sure that we can attract the players we can get, knowing and proving that compared to spurs and liverpool we are still the better side to join

  28. gmv8

I’m not getting carried away, but I always thought we had a good enough team to win the league, but there was clearly a major disagreement in the team after Christmas, as nobody was even looking each other in the face, on the field or on the bench, but things seem to have improved now, along with the formation change. AW himself has alluded to something going on. Anyway, lets hope we can keep the team together, with 1 or more additions next year

  29. Ignasi

We need to do absolutely everything to keep Sanchez.

If we lose him and are unable to bring in someone of that calibre, its possible we will struggle to make the top 8.

    ‘Pay him what he wants’..

  30. Rosicky29

We won because we wanted it more,
I think Sanchez will join bayern hope I’m wrong though, we need a Sanchez replacement even if he signs a new contract just because we can and don’t need to be relying so heavily on just one player I’d sign Henry onyekuru and toliso and sell ozil the vibe he gives off hasn’t changed in the past 2 seasons and how tf did he miss that chance

    1. Ignasi

Yeah, for a £40million player who can’t use his right foot is poor.

Ozil did well today, but was at fault for losing the ball and then Chelsea scoring. Also, he turns on too much flair when its unnecessary. Remember, Ozil was a panic buy and wasn’t a player that we needed at the time. I guess, in hindsight its turned out pretty well given long term injuries to Cazorla and Wilshere. Obviously, Wilshere needs to go. His £100k a week can go to someone else.

But Sanchez. Everything, absolutely everything needs to be done to keep him. Did you see his eyes the end? They were like: ‘yeah, this is alright, but come on boys, I need to win bigger trophies than this, right?’

  31. khangunners

Awsome stuff. Coyg!! Hehe i never gave us a shot but am glad they proved me wrong

  32. Wenger sign for life

Breaking news :- next season onwards FA cup will rename as Wenger cup so he can leave arsenal in peace. Lolllllllllll

    1. Simon

      Gutted 🙁

I flew over to uk from Thailand to watch game. Wish there was a procession

  33. Midkemma

    Well done Arsenal!
Fantastic performance and it came after getting better in that formation with every game played, how well can we do in this formation if we get the right reinforcements?

In this formation we do need another CM as Ramsey gets injured a lot and Cazorla age is affecting his fitness. Tolisso looks like a good player and seems to want to play for us over other big teams so I do hope to see him join, a player playing with passion is always a joy to watch…

    Passion…
That is what all our players had today.
Alexis leading that flow of passion as always.

For me, this wasn’t a performance from Alexis that says he wants to leave, he wanted to win a trophy and wants to win things… I have a small belief that he will sign a 2 year contract (so effective 12 month extension) for a payrise and he will be our attraction. I do have this belief that he wants to win things with Arsenal where he is the main man, number 1, top dog… Our Messi.

Last but not least, I got to applaud Holding for not being beaten mentally by Costa the thug, if anything he seemed to have told Costa that he has him figured out… either that or calling him a head case XD Either way, well done young man! Stepping up like a dream come true! I look forward to seeing him develop, a player for the future but also doing the job now. He is amazing!

  34. Rosicky29

As much as I like mustafi holding just seems so comfortable in his position it’s beyond his years
I’d pick wen fit a three at the back defense of

    Mustafi holding koscielny

    Wingbacks
    Hector oxlade gibbs kolasinac

    1. Midkemma

I am curious to how well Chambers could do at the right side of the back 3.
He lacked pace for the RB role and he had moments at CB which was poor but overall he was a decent defender, he done well out on loan so… Maybe his experience in development can shine…

I don’t know but I am curious. Would be nice if he does as Holding and Chambers might be able to form a lasting partnership and we would only need 1 more for the left… Plus they are both English and help with HG 😀

  35. Iceman_10

My brother called it from the moment Arsenal started using this formation, and we’ve both been dying to see it since: “Per would be perfect for the center of the three CBs” and it was spot on. Obvious man of the match for me.
With that being said, I’m so excited we won but what do you mean Sanchez’s first goal was fair? Haha he slapped the ball into a good space with both hands and Ramsey did throw the defenders and Courtois off enough for Sanchez to score. I agree it was best not to have called Ramsey off because we’ve seen players in offside positions throw defenses off with inconsistent calls/no calls from refs in the last few years (a couple of times we suffered because of these no calls). However, I have no idea how Alexis got away with it.
Again, I’m not complaining Arsenal was definitely the better team, but I’m not kidding myself that was a clear handball.
Anyway COYG! Per Mertesacker MOTM, Ramsey second

  36. Javier

Football has it moments a team like Arsenal with no chances to win the FA Cup with a overwhelming performance run away with the victory.Never the less overrated Wenger because he won this cup he claims is beyond criticism. Well no to my point of view sorry he has to go and give
a chance for a new Arsenal to come forward next year.
congratulations to the Arsenal fans it is their Victory!!!

  37. AC

After todays brilliant display by the lads I honestly have no earthly idea
what may transpire at the Emirates during this summer window. I have a sneaky
suspicion AW will return for a few more seasons at the helm but have the following players sported the Arsenal badge for the last time?

    Walcott
    Jack W
    Gibbs
    Giroud
    Sanchez
    Ozil
    Ospina
    Gabriel
    Debuchy
    Ox

If i could waive that magic wand Id say goodbye to Gabriel, Theo, Jack W, Gibbs
Giroud and Debuchy, resign Ozil,Sanchez, Ox and Ospina and bring in Lukaku, Mahrez and Gaya from Valencia.

Net spending after trimming all the deadwood fat would be FAR, FAR less than the hundreds of millions both Shitty and Manure are planning to invest in this window and honestly would make Arsenal IMHO very dangerous both in England and Europe

    My lineup

    Lukaku
    AS…Ozil…Mahrez
    Xhaka…Santi
    Gaya….Boss…Holding…Hector
    Cech or Ospina

    Fire Away!! lol

  38. GoonAR

You have to give Wenger credit for this one. Easily could’ve been 4 or 5-1 and this is a good feeling to end the season. Hopefully now we can get transfer business done quickly.

    COYG

  39. Craig West

    Uh-oh, it’s happened again! #Twice

We’ve only gone and won a trophy at Tottenham’s ground again ??
