Arsenal fans should give Giroud a break

Oliver Giroud is one of the most criticized players in Arsenal; he never does anything right in the sight of the fans. Apart from this season that has seen Sanchez score more goals then him, every other season has seen him end the football year as Arsenal’s highest goal scorer. Sanchez has scored more goals than Giroud because he has played many more games and of course he has played mostly as a center forward, but Olivier has still scored 16 and in fact he averages just under a goal every two games (0.43 per game) in his five years at the club.

Just over the weekend, Giroud showed how effective he can be in front of goal, by netting twice in a game for France! He keeps on getting the stick despite scoring goals. What else does this man need to do to convince football fans he is a prolific striker? Score against the Angels of God football club?

Personally, I feel Giroud is a world class and a big game player! He may miss lots of goals but most times, he scores when needed. He has come off the bench several times this season to save Arsenal from losing games that they found it difficult to score in. If I am not mistaken, he is a master in the act of scoring late goals that practically changes the outcome of a game. He is a good player I insist and should be encouraged! Those who feel he won’t make it outside Arsenal should just sit back and think again! He was the highest goal scorer at Montpellier in France before coming to Arsenal and if he was as bad as we think he is, why does France still use him? Don’t they have better strikers who can bench him?

  1. Fair point.
    Giroud does have an
    impressive goal tally.
But because Arsenal never win the League
and get hammered in the ECL round of 16
fans criticize the whole team including Giroud.

    1. The man with one eye is King among the blind- the man with two a god. Is it harsh as fans to want a striker to deliver 20+ goals IN THE LEAGUE a season? Giroud constantly aims to score 20 in all comps ending up with 13-16 in the league. Respectable but a long way off sustaining a title challenge to the end…
Giroud, good player. Not great, but good.

  2. He deserves it, do you think Arsene advised him to miss glorious chances. I don’t like how Arsene can get a daily hack job yet the same fan might have a favorite or two they are blind to. Anyone who hates Arsenals perceived softness, big match imploding, lack of desire, little to no effort, anyone who hates this should be on Mesut Ozils back also. If you hate it when we choke, a game we should have won easily, you must hate Giroud from time.

  3. mr admin I don’t get your point or reason for bringing up this topic..’giroud is world class’ are you serious or in your right mind..last night I was watching the best of henry during the invisibles…OMG..his hold up play is so good that he allows the defenders to come to him, he beats them with skill and pure pace and then pires or ljunberg is already awaiting the pass…that is world class, strikers like henry etoo Ronaldo drogba, even lewnadoski and co have learnt to drift to any direction or wing so as to pull defenders away from the box and create space for other mates..that is world class, giroud only knows how to stand in the middle and block the flow of football..he is a barrier, even dennis had to evolve his game into a dangerous number 10, his passing range was murderous, goodluck comparing ozil to that man…pffft..

    1. agreed. I even wonder how on earth would Wenger say this squad is the best he ever had? those guys could tear up anyone, they won everything except UCL (the era of the real Ronaldo, Zizou, Ronaldinho, Kaka), the cup was already booked. but pure class form the back to the front, and the reserves.

Now we have a GK who never saved a penalty for us, defenders that can mark the wrong opponents, soft midfielders that can’t time their tackles (Vieira was the master of stealing ball form people’s feet), one class forward (Alexis – he’s human too, he gets tired) then we have OG, Ozil, Walcott, and people still wonder why we never win the EPL, adding the 4th is a trophy kind of minds, a recipe to the laughing stock across the globe

  4. I have always liked Giroud, as a second striker or off the bench. I reckon Giroud could be a world class player playing just behind a clinical speedster with a more counter attacking style. He has a great touch, great header and great at holding up play that is wasted with Wenger’s style. If there were two defensive midfielders and the fullbacks didn’t push so far up the pitch, compact the defence and midfield, pacy wingers and striker, 4-4-1-1, I reckon Giroud would shine.

  5. TBH this is a bit of a whiny article. I don’t recall Giroud getting any stick recently?

Giroud never was and never will be world class. His game is too one-sided (too slow, can not take on defenders others than in the air, needs too much time to shoot, slows our game down) and he misses too many chances in big moment. The fact that he scores 2 against Luxembourg hardly proves any point. Neither does the fact that he was our leading scorer when he was our main striker. If you are the main striker you better be the leading scorer of your team.

The guy made for a perfect sub this season and I think that might be his best use but if Sanchez leaves and we are back to Giroud as our main striker next year, forget about winning anything. The only thing world class about Giroud is his opinion of himself.

  6. This guys earn alot of money. If you make more money criticism will double coz expectations are very high. I think nothing is wrong when fans criticise someone as they are keeping the lad on his toes. So lets criticise alot coz we are entitled to rather than just praise and something is a miss.

  7. watch the cross Pogba put in yesterday to OG. I haven’t seen a cross like that since Thomas Vermillon(sp). Crosses like that will provide us with 10-15 more goals every year by OG. They never never come however.

  8. Giroud is a good player, a times I wonder wat is going on, we have player that is very good on air, yet no single cross goes close to his head tru out a match, if not ozil that gives oG some tru corner kick. We need to apply new strategy.
