Arsenal get striker boost ahead of Southampton clash

Arsenal have a lot more striker options this season after the purchase of Lucas Perez and the positional switch of Alexis Sanchez, but it looks like Wenger now has yet another choice up front with the long-awaited return of Danny Welbeck. The England international has only been back in training for a few weeks but Arsene has been impressed with his return to fitness. So much so that Wenger is talking about playing him in today’s Cup tie at Southampton.

“He has a chance to start or to come on, yes,” Wenger said. “He looks sharp, he’s worked very hard. Maybe it will be an opportunity for him.

“At his age and in his position he was sure to go to the European Championship. What happened to him was unbelievable and he was down for a while, but now he looks to have recovered.

“In training he still lacks a fraction of zip when he starts [moving]. But overall he looks quite fit. What is the most important is that he doesn’t look scared. That’s the biggest hurdle when you come back.”

Welbeck’s return will give Wenger more opportunities to rotate and rest any tiring strikers as we negotiate the crucial second half of the season, and Le Prof is happy that he has another fresh player to add to the squad. “If he manages to get there [to full fitness] quickly, yes,” Wenger continued. “The players who played the most in our team offensively is basically Alexis.

“All the others – Giroud has not played too many games, he is fresh, Walcott is now coming back from a good breather, we have Lucas who has not played many games.

“We have plenty of offensive potential who are fresh. It’s now down to me to use them at the right moment when they are in good form and in the right way.”

That’s right Arsene. This is a very crucial week in our season, and we want some strong and unfatigued players saved for next weekend’s clash with the League leaders Chelsea. I am really looking forward to seeing the line-ups for today, Tuesday and next Saturday. This is a real test of Le Prof’s selection skills…..

  1. I can’t wait to see Welbeck back. He scored loads of late goals when he finally came back last season.
The problem is that I look at him like he is a supersub, like Giroud, and probably Lucas as well. So where does this leave those two?
I bet Wenger wishes he had his usual glut oof injuries so the team picks itself lol

  2. Danny should only play 10/15 minutes, and that is only if we are winning easily. We have too many completely fit players to take risks. Especially today.

  3. Todays encounter is very important but so is Tuesdays encounter so a good balance is required to keep our squad fresh and funky we need to win this one for sure
