After the amazing 6-5 win over Legia Warsaw at the weekend, the papers are full of Arsenal transfer rumours about goalkeepers, obviously based on the premise that Wenger will have been so incensed after conceding five goals that he just HAS to buy a replacement.
I laughed very hard when told about Arsenal putting in a £23m bid for Pepe Reina, but there are numerous reports now saying that it is completely true! Both the Sun, the Mail and numerous other websites are claiming to have inside knowledge that Wenger has put in a second bid of £25m for the Spaniard. It would certainly be a dream come true if Liverpool would sell him, but I just can’t help being cynical……
Another goalkeeping rumour that was mooted last week was that Arsenal were negotiating with Man City to take the young Joe Hart on loan for a year, to give Wojneich Szczesny another seasons experience before throwing him in at the deep end of the Premiership, but http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Arsenal-will-try-and-sign-Shay-Given-if-Manchester-City-confirm-Joe-Hart-as-their-number-one-keeper-article547905.html (in an ‘exclusive’ of course) says that the Man City boss Roberto Mancini has decided that Hart will be his Number One next season, which would consign Shay Given to the substitutes bench unless he moves on.
This revelation has persuaded Wenger to restart talks with City, but with a view to taking Given on loan instead, although City are more likely to want a full transfer to take yet another name off their ever-expanding squad list. Personally I would find it hard to understand why City would happily strengthen one of their rivals, but after such a long transfer window my cynicism knows no bounds!
Meanwhile everyone on the Arsenal terraces is hoping that Lukasz Fabianski is not going to be allowed between the sticks this season, and even more so after the game in Warsaw, but the player himself is pretty confident that he remains in Arsene Wenger’s plans.
Fabianski’s Polish interview in Warsaw was translated by The Online Emirates, and one of the questions and answers were as follows:
Q: “On Saturday some British newspapers reported that Arsenal are prepared to pay £25m for Jose Reina, if this is true could it mean that you would be the back up plan?”
A: “You should know better than that. People will always read somewhere that a goalkeeper is coming to Arsenal. Well it doesn’t affect us and I would not tell you why, because my role is to work hard in training and on the pitch.
“Last season I was severely criticised, because of the mistakes I made. I am already immune to bitter words. I think I now have a hard skin, it was difficult for me, but I endured by focusing on the fact that there will be better opportunities ahead. Now I look towards the future with optimism.”
That doesn’t sound like he is expecting to move on does it? Whatever these rumours today, I have the sneaky feeling that Almunia will be on the pitch against Liverpool, and Fabianski will be on the bench as normal, and it will be like the summer never happened………
