Arsenal International round-up – Watch Iwobi’s maiden Nigeria goal

A couple of Arsenal stars were in action yesterday in World Cup qualifying matches, while on-loan Joel Campbell appeared for Costa Rica in a friendly match.

Campbell is currently plying his trade in Portugal, having joined Sporting Lisbon until the end of the season, but remains under contract to Arsenal, and is well worth a mention, having helped his country to a emphatic 4-3 win over World Cup hosts Russia. The forward came off the bench with the scores tied at 3-3, after his side previously held 2-0 and 3-1 advantages, and managed to earn a penalty in the dying minutes of the match, before putting away the spot-kick himself to seal the win.

Nacho Monreal was recalled to the Spain squad for this weeks internationals in the absence of Jordi Alba who missed through injury, and enjoyed a successful outing on the left of their back-three. Spain picked up a comfortable 2-0 win, while dominating a large chunk of the possession, and Monreal set-up Man City’s Nolito to close the game off at 2-0.

Alex Iwobi was also in action on the road to the World Cup, as he opened the scoring for Nigeria against Zambia yesterday.

The winger will be happy to have bagged his first senior international goal, even though Zambia will be fuming having failed to clear the ball from their box, and the keeper will not be happy to have failed to steer the ball clear of his goalmouth either. The Super Eagles wento onto win the match 2-1, with City’s Kelechi Iheanacho adding a second first-half goal, before the Zambian consolation goal late into the second-half.

Granit Xhaka and Laurent Koscielny are in line to feature tonight also, as Switzerland and France travel to Andorra and the Netherlands respectively.
