Arsenal move on to next target as Paulista gains work permit

The winter transfer window is now entering its final week and surprisingly Arsenal have already completed one deal with the news that the Brazilian defender Gabriel Paulista has been granted a work permit allowing him to join the Gunners at last.

But it seems that Wenger has not finished his business and has now turned his attention to the versatile Borussia Dortmund defender Kevin Grosskreutz. The previously successful Bundesliga side are currently languishing near the bottom of the League and their star players are becoming frustrated and are looking for ways out of the club.

Both Mats Hummels and Grosskeutz have been linked with moves to Arsenal and Man United this month, but it is unlikely that Dortmund would sanction the departures of both of them this winter. Hummels is expected to command a very large transfer fee, but according to the Express today, Grosskreutz can be purchased for just £3.7m. This seems like an excellent price for a 26 year-old that is comfortable playing on the right or left side of the defence.

Although brought up in Dortmund and spending his whole career there, Grosskreutz is said to be a fan of Arsenal and the rumours are saying that he is much keener on moving to the Emirates than joining Louis van Gaal at Man United. Whether that is true remains to be seen, but it is great to see that Wenger is making a concerted effort to plug the glaring gaps in the Arsenal squad.

If we end up with Bielik, Paulista and Gosskreutz by the end of the month, I for one will be a very happy Gooner!

  1. I would rather have Chambers as the 4th choice centre back. He’s looking good already and would hate for his development to become hindered by having another defender in front of him in the pecking order.

    1. If only Wenger thought in those lines before signing Carzola or Ozil for the 10 role since it might hinder Wilshere’s progress / Sanchez as it might hinder Ox, Theo, Gnarby, Ospina – Scz, etc.

Am not trying to disagree so much with you but this talk of we cant buy an already made player who could potentially add much quality to our team because we have a prospect gets to me.

At 19 Chambers has a long way before been considered our 1st choice CB. Mert is a 50/50 player as it is and is 30. Gibbs injury prone. Monreal 50/50. Kos, I pray that injury or knock does not carry on. Debuchy’s luck with us is something else. Bellerin also a prospect at the moment. So a signing does not guarantee disturbing Chambers development only plus the player is question is versatile.

We tried the youth project and even stubborn Wenger himself saw this was not paying off and started buying a blend of experienced and young players.

Having said all this, I still cant see us getting him

      1. The guy has played in every single position on the pitch including goalkeeper!
He is the ultimate utility player and a under 4 million I couldn’t see him pushing Chambers out of the team, he would be cover for injuries wherever they may occur and a sub to close games off.

  2. As much as I would like one more, I seriously doubt it.

Glad some of the others have started to pick-up the slack on the goal-scoring front though. Timing is pretty good too, as Sanchez seems to have gone off the boil a bit over the last 2 games.

Also think we should stick to the team that beat Man City. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

  3. Grosskreutz would be a good buy.
    Can cover several positions.
Seems unlikely klopp wil let go of him for that price in there current position.

    1. Also it wouldnt hurt to have more Germans, if Reus doest work out at madrid or Bender lars of course and Draxel Hummels decide on England well then am sure our Germans would try and influence. Speaking of influence i noticed how Henry used his new position to mention how he heard Paulista was a special talent… a player needing work visa must be considered special talent, coinsidence i think not.

  4. What a 1st defense we would have:

    Player Age
    Mert – 30
    Kos – 29
    Debuchy – 29
    Monreal – 28
    Chambers – 19
    Bellerin – 19

    Paulista – 24
    Grosskreutz – 26

Good player though as others have said this could hinder the progress of Chambers as potential/future CB player. If he is in Wenger’s plans though, go ahead and get him Le Prof. This move could spell the end of Jenkinson at Arsenal too.

    1. excellent signing…this would mean gibbs or bellerin would have limited games or vice versa with monreal and debuchy if there are no major injuries

      1. @ Hafiz
Agreed. Though as we all know injuries are part of our team season in season out.

        – Gibbs is injury prone

        – we are now always praying for the best once Kos goes down

        – Mert is 30 now (I know defenders can play to 35 or so but can Mert do that and keep us competitive, we will wait and see)

        – Chambers at 19 still has a long career ahead of him and as seen his still learning and the coach will definitely give him chance. (his still a prospect though its no guarantee that CB position is his currently)

Worry not am sure its just a rumor but having a player with his experience and versatility could be great.

By the way this new you is refreshing, without the spend spend spend. Wait a minute you might be an imposter and not our Hafiz. 007 on the case!!!

  5. loan watch:

    Player Name: Wellington Silva
    Current team: Almeria
    Age: 22
    Position: Winger (both side’s)

Am curious yawl, does anyone have an insight on how this player is currently performing and at 22, does he have a career at the club?

Those of us blessed with writing skills, an article and profiles of our players out on loan/ the reserves would be good. A lot of players on our books who we don’t look at out there.

  6. It will be really good, if it happens then in the summer we can call Jenko back and send chambers on loan. 1 DM please arsene. Thanks anyway!

  7. Grosskreutz would be awesome. Mature, still youngish and experienced. Watched Flamini Sunday and he is in fact a headless chicken. Arteta is getting on and he would be an awesome replacement along with Coquelin. Chambers and Bellerin are still very young and with Kos and Paulista we now are starting to have a balanced defence. If we can’t get Schneiderlin, then Grosskreutz is a great option. Still think we need 1 top striker…..but sort defence out first and maybe in summer we can get that cherry for the top.

  8. maybe Wenger was bashed too much by the fans, players and the board for assuming the defense part of the team and now he is paying back by buying too many defense personnel n will soon change tactics to chelsea-like boring park the bus method 🙁 🙁 🙁
We will be playing with 5 defenders, 3 defensive midfielders, one central midfielder and one striker 🙁 🙁 🙁
We are sorry Wenger, we didn’t mean to upset you 🙁 . But if you feel very upset, please punish us by resigning, we will be very hurt, will miss u n will be very sad to miss the many trophies u brought us last ten years and the countless times we overcame top table teams especially Chelsea 🙁

    1. Monreal
      Debuchy Paulista Kos Mert Gibbs
      Flamini Coq Chambers
      Arteta
      Bellerin

subs: Jenky, Bielek, Hayden, Diaby, Grosskreutz

a purely defensive team it will be
      🙁 🙁 🙁
      #what have we done!!
      #Wenger out before too late

    1. you got thumbed down for having a laugh 🙁 🙁 🙁
      people here are mean 🙁

  9. Only fools on this site wouldn’t notice that Pythagoras is just a funny guy and says things that sound funny.I keep saying that most people here take things too serious and wouldn’t know when someone is joking.

  10. i for one am not 100% certain that the paulista transfer has actually gone through yet.and by that i mean LEO has not officially confirmed this signing yet . and as we all know on here LEO is the one and only transfer guy on here !. so , until our LEO weighs in on this transfer i am not believing that we have secured the services of young paulista just yet.
