Arsenal player ratings from Boro – Ozil MOTM

It seems as though most people are naming Alexis Sanchez as their Man of the Match after Arsenal beat Middlesborough to end the dreadful run of away defeats in the Premier League, but I thought the Chilean had a pretty poor night in general, even though he did score the opener with a nice free kick and played a part in the winner. For me it was Mesut Ozil, one of the stars of the euro 2016 tournament, who made the most impact and played better throughout, including a sweet strike with his wrong foot to win the points.

Cech 6 – No chance with Negredo goal but otherwise good and huge save from Ayala header.

Gabriel 6 – Stood up well after very early booking.

Koscielny 6 – At fault for goal but marshalled new system pretty well.

Holding 6 – Very impressive to say it was his first game in ages.

Oxlade-Chamberlain 7 – Gave absolutely everything which Arsenal badly need.

Monreal 6 – At fault for goal but got forward as much as possible.

Xhaka 5 – Apart from winning free kick he added almost nothing.

Ramsey 6.5 – Slow star but got better and key chest down for winner.

Ozil 8 – Showed his class but more importantly the work rate and desire we want.

Alexis 7.5 – His touch and radar was off but still played a key role. Loved his reaction at the end.

Giroud 6 – Should have had clear penalty but got little change from defence.

subs:
Coquelin and Bellerin 6 – Both did alright and helped to see out the result.

  1. It’s only at Arsenal that Man-of-the-match is celebrated like a Trophy

    .

Expecting a sizeable number of thumbs down LooooooL

  2. Monreal was poor, Gibbs would be better in this formation.
Giroud did nothing. Is Perez dead?

Xhaka – slowed the game down to much, but did win the free-kick..
Ramsey (Denilson) – backwards and sideways, What does he do?

Ox was MOTM: up and down all night, kept his discipline after an early yellow, beat players, sent in good crosses that someone HAS to be on for once!

Wenger says Arsenal “won’t be held to ransom” over Ozil and Sanchez yet who won us the game…

  3. This is a devastating year

    Tottenham win the double

They deserve it…they got a good manager, proper DM, world class striker and quality wingers

They have 22 world class players to provide rotation and competition…

Got to give em credit when it is due

Time for a change…looking forward to a new manager in summer

    1. 22 world.class players
      Looooool

I would say they haven’t got 1. They have quality players.
      But a brilliant manager
Something we haven’t had in More than a decade

  4. Giroud was terrible and Gabriel was even worse. Monreal was poor, as was Ramsey. Xhaka poor too. Ox I thought enjoyed himself and Sanchez and Ozil were good and their quality showed in the end.

At the end of the day the 3 at the back was so that teams couldnt run straight through which is a poor showing from Xhaka and Ramsey

  5. Boro had 35% possession with more shots and more dangerous chances created from set pieces

    .
If they were a decent team, they could have buried half the chances

    .
Lets not get carried away by the result….. We are still playing Pizz poor

      1. Read a stat.. Middlesborough haven’t won a game since December the 17th
        Bloody hell loool

They had chances to win yester. Quite worrying
        23 city
        26 Leicester
        30 spurs

        Actual tests not championship fodder

  6. Admin hates me……
Just kept moderating my decent comments without posting ’em. That’s so low class.

  7. For me, Chamberlain was the man of the match. He was always threatening for Middlesborough and there should have been a few goals created from his crosses. Unfortunately Giroud is not quick enough to get those crosses. But I would have given Giroud a 7, because he fought hard in the front, despite there was no goal from him. Ozil’s style looked suitable for the new formation.

  8. Good points are that some players seemed to be on form and putting in the effort, like ozil and Ox, and it is an away win. Otherwise it was a very disappointing poor performance with nothing to suggest we can get top four, or even make a decent attempt at it.

  9. We’re going to need a miracle to qualify for next seasons UCL.
Not only do we have to win all our remaining games, we also need the teams above us to drop some serious points and also hope that Utd don’t win the Europa league, surely Leicester won’t win the UCL? lol.

Even the most avid Wenger out fan ? would smile if we managed to achieve that ?

  10. Not sure why Holding is given the same rating as Gabriel, and especially Koscielny, given he was directly at fault for Boro’s goal. Holding or the Ox for MOTM for me.

Holding 7.5 – Has barely played for us this season, and was thrown into a must win away game, in a new formation, and was excellent. Easily the best out of our three CB’s on the on night. Very calm, and assured, with good distribution.

Ox 7.5 – He put two good crosses in within the first three minutes, which is unheard from Arsenal! Constant threat down the right because of his pace, but more importantly, his willingness to take players on. Two poor shots in the second half, especially the first one when he should have squared it, but otherwise, quality performance, considering he isn’t a wing-back by trade.

  11. So ozil was motm because he ran for the first time in his life? Ox was easily the best player on the pitch. Only player who ran at the defense successfully. Everyone else still does sideways and backwards passes. Little creativity

  12. It’s amazing how so many people can see the game so differently. I think peoples likes and dislikes about certain players keeps from fairly judging all players equally. I agree Holding was our best CB, but defensively speaking it was midfielders who gave the better performance.
