Arsene Wenger has been considering new strikers to add to the Arsenal squad, and it was reported this week that David Villa from Barcelona had found his way to the top of the transfer target list. The 31-year old Barcelona front man certainly has a fantastic reputation and recored, but there are one or two issues that have given Le Prof second thoughts, and so he is now leaning towards the 24-year old Adrian Lopez from Athletico Madrid.
Wenger has already spoken to Barcelona about Villa, according to the Mirror, about a loan deal first, but the Catalan club will only sanction a permanent deal. This has raised doubts with Wenger as to why Barcelona have not played Villa more. He is worried that the striker’s age and the seriousness of the injury could spell problems for Arsenal.
Adrian is a similar style of player to Villa, and is seven years younger. Add to that the fact that his wage demands will be significantly lower and you can understand why Arsenal are having second thoughts about Villa.
My concern is that Adrian has never really been a prolific scorer, whereas Villa is the all-time top scorer for the Spanish national side. He has scored more this season than Adrian, despite hardly featuring and has bags of class. I hope the decision is not made solely over the money side of things.
