Arsenal transfer rumour round-up – Brandt, Payet, Kessie + three out?

We are less than a week from the opening of this winter’s transfer window, so we thought we’d look at the latest Arsenal rumours going around.

Dimitri Payet is the biggest name linked with a move to our club currently, and we are said to be the favourites for his signature. I don’t actually think he will be moving next month despite his club’s current struggles, but if we could bring him back to the form of last season, he would be a huge addition.

The next two we are linked are both young and full of potential, but are also starring in top leagues in the German Bundesliga and Italian Serie A at present.

Julian Brandt is the latest German to emerge from their international youth sides to break into the senior team. The winger is also claimed to be on Everton, Tottenham and Manchester United’s radars having impressed for Bayer Leverkusen thus far, and could well add to our options out wide, with Alexis having staked his claim for a move to centre-forward.

The last speculated transfer target is Franck Kessie who is currently in top form for Atalanta at present. The defensive midfielder has been key in helping his side stay within three points of the Champions League places, chipping in with seven goals as well as stamping out attacks. The Ivorian is being watched by a number of other clubs however, and it would likely drive his price up.

One player linked with a possible move in the opposite direction is Jack Wilshere. The midfielder is enjoying a loan spell with Bournemouth at present, but according to Italian reports, is wanted by AC Milan and Roma. His future will most definitely not be sorted out before the summer, and should Cazorla not extend his deal, then I expect Jack to return to our playing squad.

Another Englishman is said to be wanted, with Sam Allardyce said to be eyeing a deal to bring Kieran Gibbs in. The former England boss is looking to make him his first signing for Crystal Palace, and Arsenal have been linked with a number of replacements for the left-back over the past year, and could well cash-in.

Mathie Debuchy is another being eyed for a winter move, with Marseille said to want a temporary deal. The Frenchman has no chance of displacing Hector Bellerin from our starting line-up, and is most likely growing frustrated at his lack of action. I’m not sure Wenger is trusting in Jenkinson as back-up to the Spaniard however, and I cant imagine our manager would be keen on bringing in a new left and right-back next month.

Should we let the full-backs go? Could Brandt strengthen our attack? Do you think Payet will be moving next month?

  1. First, we are not getting a DM. Wenger said he does not buy top defensive midfielders. He never really replaced Vieira who he inherited anyway. Elney was a rare signing because Coquelin was injured and Wenger just spent over £5 million for him.

I don’t see the point in selling Gibbs. He is English and good backup and can compete with Monreal

I would say we should sell Debuchy not because he isn’t a good RB. I think he is good but he doesn’t want to be number 2 and he is injured a lot. In the summer I think we should get rid of Jenkinson too.

Don’t expect us to get anyone in January let alone a top player as we have quantity if not high enough quality.

In summer I think we need to:
    1. Extend contracts of Ozil, Alexis, Bellerin
    2. Sort out RB back up
    3. Sign a Top Forward
    4. Sign a good reliable CB
    5. Sell players who have not performed well this season, injured a lot or sell someone decent to pay for a Top forward

    1. WTF is your first paragraph on about??
We bought Vieira, how is that inheriting him? Secondly he wasn’t a DM in the slightest. Thirdly we just spent 35mil on a deep-lying midfielder. How is that not buying a ‘top DM?’

    2. Dein bought Vieira because Wenger made that part of the agreement to manage Arsenal, you want me, you buy that player.
Dein bought the player and got Wenger in not long after, Vieira was not inherited.
Vieira was a B2B player, the DM was Petit who Wenger bought and then later Gilberto who Wenger bought.

Part of the reason I get frustrated when people blindly blame Wenger for all of Arsenals transfer failings, when he 1st joined he had the exceptional David Dein to get that done and now he has to rely on Ivan Gazidis who is Silent Stans employee, not Wengers.

Regarding DM Wenger has said something like how he doesn’t believe a team needs a DM as the 2 B2B CM should rotate that role between them. I think he still thinks 2 top B2B CM is the way forward, look what he has said about Xhaka and the quality he adds going forward…

When Cazorla is fit then we might see this theory applied in practice and work, Cazorla is a smart player and compliments his teammates so who knows.

  2. Julian. Yeah, that name will cling on arsenal rumours forever. I honestly think that we won’t be signing any one in January.

  3. I’m pretty sure Viera showed up about a month before Wenger took over. Depending on who you want to believe, Viera in part came because he knew that Wenger was on his way or they were completely unrelated. Pick your narrative.

  4. Julian Brandt is a great shout he is better than draxler on the left
Jonas hector should be signed in the summer at LB
Weisler would make a good rb back up
Ascensio from real could be a gem of a signing and heir to Ozil
