Arsenal transfer search for striker may not be over yet!!

Marica on his way to Arsenal? by Ash

Arsenal’s transfer dealings may not be over for the summer just yet, with reports coming out of Romania that free agent striker Ciprian Marica could move to the Emirates next week. Arsenal did have a highly successful transfer window in the end, signing four players in Ozil and Viviano on transfer deadline day, and Flamini and Sanogo earlier on in the window, however as stated the club’s shopping may not have ended there with the latest reports suggesting we could sign a backup striker after missing out on Demba Ba at the end of the transfer window.

Ciprian Marica is a free agent after his contract with Bundesliga side Schalke 04 expired in the summer. Therefore the striker can move for free outside of the transfer window because he isn’t contracted to a single club. The news was reported by Sky Sports who have stated Marica’s agent has made Arsenal’s interest known in the past and now he has followed the trend by releasing some more news on his client.

He said, “Marica is a really great striker who has already got experience in western European football and so it’s natural that big clubs are eyeing his career. He’s close to joining Arsenal, but we have to wait for the next week.”

Marica is currently on international duty and so no deal will be completed in the coming days however even so it’s not a deal for fans to get particularly excited about, with suggestions that he is no better than Chu Young Park, who by the way is still at the club.

The reason why he isn’t someone to get too excited about isn’t because he will be yet another free agent addition, it’s the fact that since 2001, Marica has managed to score just 44 goals in the league games he has played in Romania, Ukraine and Germany. He does usually play out on the wing, or as a second striker, so that is some mitigation, but his figures are very underwhelming even so.

If he cannot make it in those leagues, Germany aside of course, then there is no way he is going to benefit Arsenal in the Premier League. He just isn’t good enough and 5 goals in 34 league games for Schalke over the last two years just goes to prove that he won’t have the dominant attributes to succeed in the Premier League.

On the other side of the story it could all be agent talk and we may not have a deal in place, but what makes me think there is some truth to this story is that Wenger was linked with the Romanian a few times over the course of the summer. I wonder if there are any other free agent strikers knocking about….

Not very impressive, I must admit but sign him on a 1 year deal with an option to extend so that if he fails he won’t become deadwood, and don’t pay him too much

That is just pointless. Bendtner is there and is better than this guy. No point adding to the pile.

I agree. His international record for Romania: 22 goals in 63 apps. He seems an experienced international and also started, scored and assisted on Friday, in Romania’s 3-0 victory over rivals Hungary.

Would make a decent squad player. No more than that I reckon.

But who else is buzzin to see Ozil at sunderland COYG!!

Like the way you think. Would rathar develop the young players who can improve rathar than buy more deadwood. Apkom is probably better than this guy Aswell. Hes scored more goals than him in 4 games than he has in 35

I’m sure we all would but
      - he’s not available on a free,
      - we could do with someone now,
      - and he wants to join another

So we need to look elsewhere

    NOOOOO, HE IS F*CKING TERRIBLE.

If we sign him i’m hoping its only a one year deal.

We already have Giroud who can hold off defenders and score headers. Now we need a clinical striker who can find space to shoot on goal well

We’ve got that in the guy we’ve been playing up front lately, French bloke. Highest conversion rate, goals scored and open scoring chances taken. Best striker in Europe so far.

      Nah nah nahnahnah nahnahnah Giroud!

From what I’ve seen of this guy he’d just be another number in the squad. He’s 27 so he is what he is, there won’t be any amazing potential to unlock.
I’d offer him a pay as you play deal BUT he wouldn’t go for it because he’d go hungry!

There must be better free transfer options out there or just use the time to sign someone for January, at the speed our boys work at it should be enough time.

we can play like barcelona they dont play with a central striker but a false 9. ozil could fill in that role with winger coming in the box.

Agent – “Marica is a really great striker….”. Hmmmmm!! Great strikers don’t have such an awful goal scoring record. I know the agent has to sell his client, but ‘great’, come on!

sounds like the kind of guy I’d try to sign for free for Dagenham & Redbridge in league 2 on my fifa 13 manager mode at the start of my Wenger like quest to get to the premier league without spending any money.

If we Marica hell be deadwood as soon as he arrives. The club have just made a huge effort to shift th deadwood, lets not take a backwards step. Would want to see Sanogo, Akpom and even Bentdner play before this guy

Haven’t seen him play, can’t really comment. There is a new belief in this squad at the moment in being able to go on and win something, could this guy help make that happen?

The reason you haven’t seen him is because he’s done nothing worth seeing. Deadwood!

Worthless player who will just add wages, Akpom has potential and is probably better than him this guy now so we should pass up on him, on a side note what do you guys think of allowing transfers throughout the whole season? What would the positives and Negatives be?

We used to have the transfer window open all season years ago.
It would stop inflated transfer fees but also give more player power.

You kill the lion, and run away with the second bullet as backup, and let the Tiger eat the spuds fan

superficial statistics and we don’t need to give him a big salary or a long contract so he wouldn’t be a deadwood for long even if it doesn’t work out.

his goal/minutes played conversion rate is better than bendner

Rate this comment: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  15. Tidan2

He’s not as bad as everyone is making out, the reason he has such a low goal tally at Schalke is because they never play him apart from the odd minute at the end of the match, if you look at the games when he has played 80+ minutes for them (2011/2012/2013) he has scored in over 70% of the league matches, and 90% of the cup matches with assists as well, add that to his Romania appearances and even though he never plays for Schalke he still gets lots of international game time in which he actually has a good record (3 goals and 3 assists in 5 appearances in WC qualifier 2012/2013)

give him a year contract on a lowish salary, i would pick him over Bentner every day of the week and he wouldn’t even have the audacity to claim he is one of the best strikers in the world every week.

I’m from Romania,I’ve seen him playing,my favorite team from Romania is Dinamo(the team that has Marica in the past) and strongly belive that even Fabianski could be a better stiker for us then Marica.

Ozil on an interview with the German website Der Welt (the world for those who don’t speak German):

“I have left Madrid with a return ticket to Munich and now do not fly back to Madrid, but to London.
“In some way, that conversation [with Wenger] flicked a switch in me and made me realise what I had lost at Madrid: transparency, trust, respect. He told me exactly how I saw myself, how he wanted to use me, what he expected of me.
“For the transfer fee I cannot do anything. I would even have joined Arsenal for free. I want to win titles , but I ‘ll do anything. That’s my mentality.
“We will do everything we can to get as far as possible in all competitions : I learned at Real I go to no competition and say from the outset , the goal is the semi-final or the final. When I play, I want to win.
“I talk to Per and Podolski a lot, they’re helping me.”

In his interview he mentioned Zidan, how he was a role model for him when he was a kid. And one thing he said he liked by Zizo was that he was a real ‘role mode’l on, and outside of the pitch, he didn’t have any “bad stories” attached to him…So I guess since he himself brought that up, he wants us to know, that’s he’s not coming to Arsenal to be a “party boy” in London!

This guy is awful. We must steer clear of him, better to give Bendtner a chance. I live in Germany and Schalke wanted shot of him.
