Marica on his way to Arsenal? by Ash
Arsenal’s transfer dealings may not be over for the summer just yet, with reports coming out of Romania that free agent striker Ciprian Marica could move to the Emirates next week. Arsenal did have a highly successful transfer window in the end, signing four players in Ozil and Viviano on transfer deadline day, and Flamini and Sanogo earlier on in the window, however as stated the club’s shopping may not have ended there with the latest reports suggesting we could sign a backup striker after missing out on Demba Ba at the end of the transfer window.
Ciprian Marica is a free agent after his contract with Bundesliga side Schalke 04 expired in the summer. Therefore the striker can move for free outside of the transfer window because he isn’t contracted to a single club. The news was reported by Sky Sports who have stated Marica’s agent has made Arsenal’s interest known in the past and now he has followed the trend by releasing some more news on his client.
He said, “Marica is a really great striker who has already got experience in western European football and so it’s natural that big clubs are eyeing his career. He’s close to joining Arsenal, but we have to wait for the next week.”
Marica is currently on international duty and so no deal will be completed in the coming days however even so it’s not a deal for fans to get particularly excited about, with suggestions that he is no better than Chu Young Park, who by the way is still at the club.
The reason why he isn’t someone to get too excited about isn’t because he will be yet another free agent addition, it’s the fact that since 2001, Marica has managed to score just 44 goals in the league games he has played in Romania, Ukraine and Germany. He does usually play out on the wing, or as a second striker, so that is some mitigation, but his figures are very underwhelming even so.
If he cannot make it in those leagues, Germany aside of course, then there is no way he is going to benefit Arsenal in the Premier League. He just isn’t good enough and 5 goals in 34 league games for Schalke over the last two years just goes to prove that he won’t have the dominant attributes to succeed in the Premier League.
On the other side of the story it could all be agent talk and we may not have a deal in place, but what makes me think there is some truth to this story is that Wenger was linked with the Romanian a few times over the course of the summer. I wonder if there are any other free agent strikers knocking about….
