Arsenal v Everton Review – Good result but bad news for our Cup Final chances

Well Arsenal could hardly have started the game any quicker with Hector Bellerin pouncing on a loose ball in the Everton box after Welbeck made a hash of Ozil’s cross, and the Gunners go 1-0 up with Arsenal’s first attack on the Toffees goal.

But just ten minutes later we find ourselves down to ten men as Laurent Koscielny is given a straight red for a vicious too high two-footed tackle on Valencia flying down the wing. I think we could be rueing the Frenchman’s quick recovery from his injury as we are no going to have a very nervous last 75 minutes, not to mention no chance of him playing in the FA Cup Final either. A very rash challenge that he is going to regret once he gets to the dressing room…

Goals are flying in all over the Premier League on this last match-day, but the good news is that none of them have come in the Liverpool game as yet….

Or maybe not! Just ten minutes later Alexis Sanchez takes a speculative shot from outside the box that only hits Danny Welbeck, who carried on ta take the ball away from the keeper. While the Toffees are all shouting for an offside whistle, Welbeck cooly passes the ball back to Alexis who couldn’t miss from there! 2-0 to the Gunners! And Liverpool still not scored….

Everton then decide it’s time to start playing and Lukaku and Barkley both fluff their chances as Petr Cech carries on his great form. Arsenal limp towards half-time, but just at the death we hear the news that Liverpool have taken the lead against Boro. Is that the end of our Top Four hopes? Probably….

Arsenal started well in the second half although Lukaku had another half-chance but was offside anyway. The Everton keeper Robles saves well from Welbeck but then we lose yet another defender. Gabriel tries to do a Koscielny but only ends up getting booked and also getting himself seriously injured in the process. He has to be stretchered off and it looks like we have lost another defender for the Cup Final….

Mertesacker comes on to make his FIRST appearance of the season, and it is now nearly certain to play in the Final. Ashley Williams looked like he was going to get a second yellow for tripping Welbeck, but then the ball goes down to our end and a cross gets taken down by Monreal’s arm. This gives Cech another chance to not save a penalty and as usual he doesn’t. Arsenal now only 2-1 up but Liverpool have grabbed a second goal and they quickly get a third, and we are well and truly in 5th place for the first time in Wenger’s reign. Europa League here we come…

On the hour mark, Rob Holding gets himself booked as well for a rash challenge. Doesn’t any of our defenders want to play against Chelsea next week?

With the result now irrelevant, Wenger changes Coquelin for Xhaka, and then takes Alexis off as well. He was clutching his leg just before his substitution so we hope it’s nothing serious. Everton get the ball in the back of the net again but the ref had blown his whistle quickly to ascertain another disallowed effort….

Tottenham are racking up another cricket score, Man City are 5-0 up and Liverpool 3-0 in front, while we are struggling to hold on to a 2-1 lead at home. Maybe those three teams really deserve the Champions League more than us? One record Arsenal will not want take is the ffact that a win will give us 75 points, and no team in the Premier League has ever failed to get into the Champions League with that total….

WE have one final flourish as Aaron Ramsey scores his first League goal of the season. Like Arsenal, it’s just too little, too late, but it was a perfect finish…..

    1. Time to dust off those Thursday night in Moldova jokes

Fc transylvania we’re coming for youuuuuuu

      1. “Judge me at the end of the season.”

Well Premier League has ended. SACK WENGER. GET THE FO.

        1. hear hear. We need the man who shut out Barca over two games. Has to be 1st choice. Allegri

          Silent Stan ‘OUT’ Usmanov ‘IN’

    2. Its a bitter sweet feeling we needed some change, its been coming for a long time lets hope this is the change we have been waiting for, but I agree with Kroenke out !! Damn that guy is a Leech

  1. Knowing Wenger’s luck, Bayern finish 3rd in their group, drop into Europa and thrash Arsenal

    1. Nas lyrics on the username
      I see u payslip

    1. In wengers regime
      His influence has been there

    2. This team is the image of Wenger.

Weak, cowardly, spineless and can’t handle pressure.

They will play like this when there’s nothing to win for. Arsene doesn’t know what consistency means.

      1. They played most of the game with 10 men against a decent Everton team and won in case you didnt see! How is that weak, cowardly, spineless and cant handle pressure!
Maybe you supposed fans should look in the mirror… your constant baiting of Wenger greatly affected the team.. even when we were top in Nov / Dec the same people were saying Wenger out.
You moan and moan about Wenger Trophy – ie Champions League min of 4th place – yet when we dont achieve it say we desperately need it… Arsenal should be grateful for having chance to see if for 20 years that no other PL team has…. spoilt children !
ITS A GAME ! Not life-threatening… Mourinho spent a fortune and could not win,..so did Man City !
When the next manager comes in and we end up out of top 10 then you will keep moaning and moaning rather than support your team! No guarantee Allegri or anyone else would win the league!
Try to support Arsenal next week at Wembley… if you cant do that shame on you and go support another team.

        1. We’ve had worse teams before us this season and lost. Last game of the season or not i think that’s the best I’ve seen Ozil this season and we were one man done. The bugger can work hard. he’s just shaved my opinion. We should keep him bt under a new and hungry manger The whole team played great

          Wenger out.

          1. Ozil can show his skills if there is no heavy pressure from the opponents around him. He is not Sanchez or Cazorla that can utilize the tight spaces and release himself from the opponent’s pressure by using his close ball control.

That’s why Arsenal’s new 3-4-2-1 is suitable for him. Arsenal is more controlling and has better ball possesion with that formation.

      1. Gonna be difficult, because we have lost two regular central defenders and Chelsea will apply heavy pressure on Arsenal, not like the demotivated Everton.

Gotta play players that are able to handle and release themselves from heavy pressure in tight spaces, like Sanchez and Iwobi.

  2. Everybody talking about 4th place… who cares, season was over when we dropped out of the title race… Remember what a premier league trophy looks like? That’s the thing we should be trying to win every season, not this ridiculous top 4 nonsense!

    1. It baffles me why some people who feel the Wenger trophy is the best this club can get every season hence the thumb downs…guess it’s when we start fighting with the likes of west brom for a spot in mid table that deluded fans will begin to see things clearly..

      #wengerout

    2. Do you think are chances of winning the league will be any easier now that we are not in the champions league?

The fact that we will have to play Thursday night football means our match schedule will make it harder to win the League or even break back into the top 4 like Tottenham of old.

Top players like Griezman won’t want to join us to play europa league, it would be hard to keep our best players so Sanchez may go to Mancity, our team will more likely get weaker than stronger.

Well we are out of the top 4. Many got their wish. People have to be careful what they wish for because the changes everyone is looking forward to might come as a rude awakening . For one Wenger will still be manager. Stan will still be on the board. What changes are people expecting if these people are still part of the running of the club?

Know we have a tougher match schedule and will probably go into next season with a weaker squad whilst the top four teams bring in quality players in the transfer window this summer.

      1. Oh well. Certainly wasn’t the fans making.

Maybe look in the direction of

        1. The owner
        2. The board
        3. The manager
        4. The players

        First before blaming disenfranchised fans?

      2. id agree with your comment if Arsenal were actually working to achieve something. The club is more than happy to just take the UCL money, and drop out at R16, and scrape for top 4, and not do anything beyond that. This is our punishment for having no ambition. You talk about getting all these top players, but Ozil and Sanchez are the only two we have really gotten in this “big money” era. And one of them is lax, and just as ambitious as the club, and the other one is leaving us, even if we did make UCL because we don’t win anything. Arsenal has forgotten that they are supposed to be a big European club. Maybe we need this for a reality check and to remember that we are supposed to be challenging for trophies, not just making adequate amounts of money for our owners

  3. Everton has helped Arsenal (no real pressure from them), but Liverpool is no pushover. Liverpool deserves the Champions League. Arsenal needs to focus on the FA Cup final.

They have to bring a better central defender next season, because Koscielny and Mertesacker are getting old and made a lot of blunders in the last season (Koscielny did a lot of them, not just Mertesacker, if you paid attention) and in this season.

  4. There you have ot folks… Europa League here we come!! You know what go for it, go out to win it like any other trophy, look at utd may be in UCL if they win on wednesday!

We needed this to rebuild & a great way to start is stan sellin up to Usmanov. 2nd Arsene leaves aswell as Ivan & Dick. 3rd Suitable manager under new leadership that want to win is a great start.

Show ambition & sanchez will stay or make him see out his contract & if we win a big one next season he may sign on!

Least its over now, what a terrible season & i dont see how we beat chelsea imho… they look like a team on a mission!

  5. @rsh.
    Spot on!

    Glad we won today.
    Glad we finished 5th today.
At least I can go into my summer just wondering if the drop from cl, and attempted Usmanov bid will cause any change within my beloved arsenal.

Ozil and sanchez will leave, Wenger who knows?
Will we now invest more or stay a Europe League has been team for the next 5 years.
Once our two high profile players have gone way I see it is things can only improve, can’t they?

  6. Today’s Performance is a big question that Why we don’t play like today every game of the season…. Europa League might be the blessing in disguise….

  7. Wot, No Wenger ??….. ??but, I feel naked without it.
Oh well, what with injuries and the sending off, a guaranteed losers medal is on the cards now and let’s be honest here, that crown fits.

  8. We wanted a change from the norm ..and we got it, but wrong direction, still, it’s something different. I’ll be a little excited to see how it turns out, more games is bad for footballers but very good for people who like to watch football. The only thing I don’t like about missing the top four is how Liv and Tott get to use a little more money than usual, and can target a higher profile player. But for us we never spent more because of reaching it, but maybe Alexis and Ozil wouldn’t have come without it. I still think we have enough going for us to target high profile players, but we need to really careful that we don’t end up ruing the days when top four was so easily come by.

  9. i could not be happier missing out on the champions league. only pity is that it did not happen five or six seasons ago. wenger has to be the flukiest manager ever. but now , at last, he has been found out . karma has come and bit him on his french butt.time to party , but i will put the coca cola on ice until after we pick up our losers medals at wembley next weekend . wenger out for once and for all .

  10. I am expecting Wenger to come out and try excsue himself and to sell us how good of a manger he was for being 20 years in the cl ( never won it) and that we where not lucky enought to reach it this time ( what diff would that make)

I do also expect the wengerits to come out and defend him no matter what

The reason Arsenal is in this sh34t hole is not bec of Wenger or the Yankee but bec the fans are a bunch of losers who have no mentality other than being a bunch of losers

The most emberrasing club in the world at this moment is Arsenal busiuess club

    1. The fans aren’t in the dressing room, in the boardroom, or out on the pitch, how the f@~k are they to blame.

I’ve read some cr@p on here, but this wins hands down.

      1. Like rlly how dense can Arsenal fans trully be jezus christ

Fans give meaning to power at any club, without the backing of the fans Wenger would not be around, and without Wengers backing for the board the board would also not be around

        kapishii???

  11. With a bit of luck the FA Cup will be the last we see of Wenger.

  12. Finally the long long season has come to an end. They say the table never lies so lets take it up our chin and admit we were the 5th best team in the league whole season. Now to get back into challenging for pl i dont want us to hve small ambition like getting back into champions league spot. If chelsea can do a no 7 to no 1 why cant we do a no 5 to a no 1. For all this major investment is needed and right and crucial decisions need to be taken. Like the manager, the players. …it is gonna be a do or die season for us or we will be stuck in mediocre next season.

    1. Only great teams can achieve greatness from the bad positions. Chelsea, Leicester City, Juventus and Manchester United did it. The question : Is Arsenal one of the great teams that can be a champion after got kicked out of Champions League?

Let us see whether Arsenal deserves to be supported by loyal fans or whether they just want the fans’ money. Let us see what kind of a club Arsenal is.

  13. We need a new start, Arsenal must start to do what the Spurs did which is trying to get a hungry manager with fresh ideas and who is up to prove himself, start to look up for talents other big teams might miss on, and build the team for the future slowly

    1. According to your other post Wenger and Kroenke aren’t to blame. Apparently it’s the fans fault, so all we need is a new fan base.

      1. They of course are to blame but fans are the most at fault for tolerating what simple can not be tolerated which is failure. The wake up call came simple to late for most of the dense fans. No. To be honest there still many who think that Wenger is still the right manager to bring us forward

Why should the board sack Wenger when there seems to be not a problem with most of the fans? Why should Stan sell his share to the Uzbek when fans are continuing making big money for him

        Do you get me know

        1. The fans who turn up week after week, win, lose or draw are the real fans, not glory hunters, idiots, dense or c~#*s as you called them.

The only people who suffer if they don’t renew their season tickets, or go to the games are the ticket holders, especially the season ticket holder, as there are 10s’ of thousands on the waiting list to fill the void.

Of course we want to see changes throughout the club, win major trophies, buy world class players and see entertaining football, but boycotting the games isn’t going to achieve this, it may do in the long run,and I’m talking years and not a 2 or 3 seasons, but by that time we could be regulars in the bottom half of the league on a regular basis.

If you were a player and turned out week after week to half empty stadiums, protests and boos’ how would that motivate you.

Get behind the team and support them like a proper fan, win, lose or draw.

  14. Wenger gave away top 4, literally.

First day of season, too tight to buy CB so plays with Chambers and Holding to lose against Liverpool.

Second game vs Liverpool, benches the best Arsenal player Sanchez, because he want to ‘play long’ with Giroud and Welbeck. What an farce that was.

He gave away 6 points to Liverpool. If we drew either game, not even winning them, we would’ve been 4th.

If Liverpool can get a real striker and good CB they could do well in UCL. Atleast it’s 6 less fixtures for me to see next year, I’m not watching any Europa league game, exception being if we get to quarter final stage.

    1. Trust me man you will watch all europa games hehe its just our love for the club that will cheat us

      1. Hehehe right mate, I have the same plan of not watching any Europa league of ours next season but I know, blood is thicker than water

    2. Let’s just say losing at home to Watford killed the Wenger ?

      1. I agree, losing that game to Watford was a real killer, since then Watford have been the worst team in the league and we lost to them….sums our season up really.

    3. @HA559 totally agree it’s those strange decisions that cost us top 4.. but 18pts off the title? Hmm.. Something needs to change!

    4. What about Walcott’s 30 million GBP missed penalty at home versus Liverpool compounding Wenger’s failure to invest in centre backs at the start of the season?

  15. Wenger said Judge me at the end of the season well I have news for you Mr Wenger it’s Judgement day Mr Wenger and you Failed.

  16. Very big summer coming up.
Nice to see the protests against Kroenke at the stadium.
To be honest we never deserved CL football so good luck to those that qualified – truth is though, none of them have a prayer of winning it.
I hope we use the Europa to play fringe and youth players so we can concentrate on improving next season – trouble is Wenger is an idiot so that won’t happen.
I don’t know – I just get a sinking feeling knowing that Kroenke and Wenger are there…

  17. Bellerin MOTM. Iwobi looked very bright when he came on. Good game by Ozil and Sanchez. Holding still not yet the finished article.

  18. John Terry has just said that with CL football next season Chelsea will need to keep their current players and strengthen. He expects the manager and owner will bring in 5 or 6 big players next season. Abramovich will have toget his cheque book out again.

  19. Like I said before, Wenger won’t dare go on as the manager of AFC next season. He has seen the frustrations from the fans. He won’t risk it.

    1. With 8m a year, he risked getting layed by divorcing wife. frustrations are the least of the factors that makes his blood boil, the guy is immune to anything when his salary side of the brain is triggered

  20. I guess a few more weeks and the articles “can Wenger win the PL 2017/2018?” will come out and then the whole cycle will repeat itself.

I am a little curious about how the fans will react to the news that Wenger will stay once it is announced but I expect it will be much like us missing out on the top 4, a bit of grumbling but no real reaction because we all saw it coming months ago.

  21. Yeh, GREAT result. We beat Everton at home and got a whacking 3 points that mean absolutely nothing.

    Magnificent!

  22. Im not a die hard Arsenal fan but have been a loyal supporter over 10 years. And it pains me to see the club regressing year by year. I can only imagine what you fans must be going through. I believe Kroenke is the root cause of all problems followed by Wenger. And the only way to make the club listen is to stop paying for the tickets. I myself stopped buying Arsenal merchandise over the past year cause I believe its only filling personal pockets and not helping the club. Hit Kroenke where it hurts most.

    1. Great athlete but a striker or forward of any skill he is not.
When you think we could have made a bid for dybala but our scouts/Wenger didn’t think much of him apparently.

But we end up with danny when Wenger is out the country because gazidis panick bought him to appease wanting fans and to try to make up for an ineffective and inactive manager.

      1. That’s the problem arseovertit we keep panic buying because of that blithering idiot
        Mustafi
        Welbz
Perez ( although I think he could be good under d cent manager )

Yet how many good ones do we miss

  23. Kronkie wants to stay so he can see the club win the premier league and the CL, hmmmm we not even in the top two in London

  24. The only thing that could keep Sanchez at Arsenal at least for another season is Fa cup and confederation cup title with Chile. They only have to better a 2nd string Germany team and maybe Mexico to win that.

  25. For the first time in many season I’m not going to spend the whole summer checking every day to see who we sign and are linked with. For me it will be a window of who we are selling.

We might even have to go back to the ages of ‘selling before we buy’ again due to even restricted funds.

  26. We should now embrace the Europa Cup and take it seriously, win it and we are in the CL. Yes, there is a bit of travelling but it’s not as if they are flying economy is it!! Also I don’t buy this thing about not being able to sign top players when not in CL, MU and Chelsea signed top players last year despite not being in CL. It’s all about selling the club and of course paying the asking price.
