Arsenal v Leicester – Lucky win after lamest of games from Gunners

You might have suspected that all the positivity that came about after Arsenal not only won a place in the FA cup final but produced the sort of commitment and determination that has been sadly lacking for so long would be a bit of a false dawn, but not many would have expected us to be quite so bad and back to the bad old days quite as much as we saw tonight.

The result was right, as we got the three points we so desperately needed against Leicester City, but it came from a massive slice of luck towards the end of a game that we never looked like winning. Even after we got an undesrved lead from Huth deflecting a wayward shot, the Arsenal players did their best to throw it away.

The sad thruth is that this was not unlike the Arsenal we have become used to and aprat from the result it should only increase the frustration of the fans and the pressure on the manager. Arsene Wenger must take some blame for this awful performance just as many of the players should hang their heads.

Was Theo Walcott asleep or on drugs or something? Have Coquelin and Xhaka ever met of played football before? Has Cech or Koscielny had some sort of memory failure? Is Wenger glued to that bench?

Anyway we got a 1-0 win but do any of us really think that we can keep winning and achieve another top four finish?

  1. Positive result, but let’s be real, this game was very unpleasant to watch, especially the last 5 minutes. This Arsenal team is just so far off from past squads. Embarrassing game and I don’t see us beating Spurs or United, who we still have to face. MOTM Monreal for defending well and not being afraid to take a shot. Let the thumbs down commence friends.

    1. And for the records…. Spuds over powered palace (contrary to the wishes of many)
      .
We can hate m all we want, but there’s no denying the fact that they are a disciplined team this season….. With excellent attacking football
      .
It hurts me to know that my dear Arsenal are Light years away from developing this trait…
      .
How do we go through our remaining fixtures being this woeful?

    2. @RSH

I agree, great result, shocking performance again. Do Arsenal ever look good in victory anymore?
Monreal MOTM as well for me.

      Cech 7
      Gabriel 7
      Koscielny 7.5
      Monreal 8
      Bellerin 6
      Coquelin 5.5
      Xhaka 7
      Gibbs 5
      Walcott 2
      Ozil 4
      Sanchez 3

Subs didn’t really have enough time to impact. Sanchez had a poor game, but I marked him down so much because of his play acting, not good to see!

      1. So you’re saying that for a team that’s playing in a new system for the third time that they’re looking better defending than going forward? Yeah that sounds about right. What about it?

  2. awful as always.more effort than we have seen this season but mid table fodder

bellerin looked dynamic at times, gabriel with some quality blocks. monreal is back and thats good

but it saddens me i love football that much that id rather watch a team in decline than not at all

    1. @ muff….. We are the Arsenal and we got a big Canon?….. How do you shoot a gun with a gun? LoL

  3. 1 nil to the Arsenal, 1 nil.

Imagine how great it would be to come away with 3 points from the last NLD at the lane.

  4. Very ugly win, but essential for the 4th position. This was just the third time Arsenal used the 3-4-2-1 and the players have lost the battle spirit in this season, so be patient guys. Experiments are needed for the next season.

Sanchez has to be more sportive if he wants to be as good as Messi. It is better if Sanchez plays centrally behind a real striker like Welbeck next time.

    1. I’d give Bellerin, Gibbs, and Monreal some leeway on that front as it was new to them, also it’s never a good idea to make many defensive changes, but no excusing the forwards nor the forward play.

    2. This formation requires more directness from the players but the likes of Ramsey, Ozil, Giroud are still attempting the sluggish way of playing from the old system and thats why we won’t make the top 4.

    1. HA as if!

we have been way worse than this
this on the scheme of things is basically our average day

  5. Our strikers failed us miserably today. Masterclass and MOTM performance by Xhaka. Wenger could have done better with the substitutes. Walcott should have been off from the 60′. All in all a 3 points we needed.

  6. Wenger has lost it, can’t motivate players during matches, just sits down and shivers all d time. anyway a win is a win and tank God we got dat 2nyt. although it still doesn’t change the fact that the team is not living up to the expectations of their faithful fans.

  7. Hahaha….Arsenal are a bunch of Jokers

    ,
what was that comedy in the dying hours of the game?

    1. that was disgraceful. Just shows how scared the players are to concede a late goal. And all that nonsense actually led to Leicester almost scoring. When people call football a “man’s game” I just have to laugh and tell them to watch the modern day game. Flopping, overreaction after every bit of contact, teams fake squaring up… Just ridiculous. Get on with the game.

  8. We have become like a small club grinding for points to make it into the wenger trophy while teams like spurs are compiting for the epl, sigh, whou would believe this some years before

  9. Selection was really Poor…. You are playing with back 3 with 2 forward moving wing backs who can buried the ball into the box but we didn’t have any target man who can met those crosses…. Numerous times Sanchez was coming deep to receive a ball…. Walcott certainly not a forward who can run into the box… When you are playing 3 at back then should have Target… There is only 1 team demonstrating 3 at back apart from Arsenal is Chelsea… And if you observe them then have that Target man as Costa…. Frustrating from Wenger…. He should make way for someone…

      1. Selection was the same you have mentioned but if you look at the movement of players then Sanchez was time and time getting deeper and deeper to receive the ball and then Walcott was moving into central position which was horrible…. Initially it should have been Sanchez on left or right and and Welbeck or Giroud through middle… Numerous times our wing backs got into amazing position to cross it into the box but there were no physical presence in the box hence again they need comeback into the midfield to find Ozil or Xhaka..

  10. Player ratings GK-5 not much to do looked a bit shaky on crosses
Bel- 6 got forward but poor crossing
Mon-7 did ok but impact for the goal
Gaby- 7 defended well looked solid
    Kos-6 did ok
Coq-6 ok defensively but poor distribution
Xhaka-6 did ok at times but very average player
Gibbs- 6 wing back looks to suit his ability but would like more from him
Walcott-5 looked average and positive enough in possession
Ozil -4 poor in possession and none existent without the ball , luxury player
Sanchez 5 worst game I’ve seen him have and embarrassed the team by going down after the ball hit him although the Leicester player deserved a ref

    Giroud-5 not a big impact
Welbz-6 looked to cause problems when he came on, if he could score he would be an awesome player
Ramsey-5 not a big fan but at least he tries
Wenger-5 got the win but players don’t want to play for him, started to ruin the club

    1. walcott 5????

hahahah FOH dude he was trash!!! 3 tops
      ozil an sanchez very poor

gabs and monreal stood out abit

      this team no words

      1. This rating system is all wrong.

        Theo. 0 out of 10
Sanchez. -5 out of 10 (yes minus 5) for being such a disgrace.

  11. Poor showing again. But he will get a new contract so doesn’t really care.

  12. sack the manager and we will have results. with the last 15 minutes and still the same funny bunch of players. mr. stubborn you are very lucky cause we reached the cup final. bould and yourself seems you have glue on your seat because the only times you get up is to moan with the 4th official. gooner = forever

    1. giroud ramsey theo gibbs
wenger and his lack of coaching ability stays so does the mediocre players he bred in this club
ridicolous we have to see more of this for years to come

      a joke

    2. I’d blame the players more so for a game like that. Individually some shocking performances, we changed shape and formation three times but players were just so poor. We had the ball allot and weren’t getting physically tested by any means, final ball was extremely poor and the movement in front matched it.

    3. @ Break-on-through……… And i blame Mr. Rumplestiltskin for bringing in such physically/mentally weak players into this team….

      .
Whta did he expect to be the outcome?

  13. Only thing of note on the good side was Xhaka, he hit some wonderful balls and that’s about it. Walcott ..utter crap, Alexis ..unbelievable how bad he was, Ozil ..did he play, Bellerin ..wasteful but at least he and Alexis tried unlike Walcott. I don’t for the life of me know why Walcott and Coquelin did not come off at half time. We did not need this type of performance leading up to the Tott game.

    1. you would call those shots wonderful? LoL ….Like the goal post was located on a 2 storeyed building *face palm*

  14. play coq in starting is joke, he cant past player, cant defend, cant read games
just run around midfield, static and very simple pass
why didnt pick el neny wenger?
walcott cant do anything, we need chambo to change the flow of game

  15. Shocking game shocking! Only positive is we got the three points which are very crucial for us but at the moment we look all over the place. We hve won but i feel so mad!! Cmone arsenal show me the desire!! Happy for three points now onto derby day. If wenger keeps favouring players it will cost us big time how and why does walcot get a start? Bellerin once again poor. This season he has been average at best he is like a shadow if compared to last year.

  16. Who cares if we don’t compete for the league? Or go anywhere in Europe? As long as our football is attractive and…oh wait a minute!!

  17. i was never a wenger fan but today prove that wenger success was due to lack of competition from other teams in the league now that there emerging competition we out of Champion league position. no manager in this league with that squad would start that team that he started today why the change did not happen sooner so the players can adopt how long those it take for him to see we need a target man wenger out clueless manager

  18. How about Joey Barton on a free? He’s been banned from football but as we don’t play any i cant see it being an issue.

  19. Go back to the direct football Arsenal played in the good old days. Falling asleep watching all the unproductive sideways passing. And have some gung ho crazy mentality and shoot ffs! All this fiddeling around with fancy passing with no meaning

  20. Don’t quite understand why some seem to be so down on this game. Leicester was always going to be a tricky game and they are not so far of from their last season’s form if you consider their results since the new manager took over.

Also with many games on the trot coming up against Spurs and Man U followed by Southampton Wenger needed to shuffle the squad a little bit.

With too many defenders and not enough creative players it was never going to be a 3-0 win. Bellerin was particularly poor as wingback. Not only did his crosses not arrive he also made poor decisions and was out of position often, combine that with a Theo who acted like Ozil on a bad day and nothing really good came from our right side. Perhaps Theo and Bellerin have to get used to the 3 at the back perhaps the system doesn’t suit them but we still won.

In games like this Wenger should allow the lads to take a shot at goal from outside the box, this puts much more pressure on defenders than when the know we will not shoot and only pass around. When we finally did shoot we had results, a goal which was a deflection but that’s on the defense and Sanchez hit the cross bar. Wenger needs to adjust this part of his plan IMO with stubborn defending teams you have to draw defenders further out with the threat of shots on goal.

But overall I am not unhappy and never expected an easy win particularly with this line-up.

Now let’s go beat Spurs against all reasonable expectations!!!!!

      1. Thanks, guess even after this whole season fans were still expecting an easy 3-0 win. Hard to understand.

You don’t get points for possession but all in all I think we deserved the win more than Leicester.

  21. Wenger had admitted Arsenal are interested in Mbappe however he states we may not be able to compete with the finances of other clubs

    Wenger & Kronkie OUT

  22. I’m watching Henry king and souness on sky discussing the game at the weekend
How I miss Henry he has more winning mentality than all our current squad together

    1. So you like Henry’s winning mentality yet You say Kronkie out! ? ? did you know that his son actually wants Henry to replace Wenger?

      1. That’s his son Fats and winning mentality is what we lack
Another point is anyone is better than wenger at the mo

    2. The telling comment was that when Thierry was asked which Arsenal players could get in tjhe Tottenham team he could only name Sanchez.

  23. A big Thanks to Huth ? we couldn’t have done it without you.
By the way, I think the big forker was looking for Sanchez at the final whistle ?? Good job the little forker legged it off the pitch in double quick time… That was quickest movement he made all night.

I’m a firm believer in conspiracy theories and isn’t it funny how Fat Sam made 3 changes to his palace team as soon as Arsenal scored lol and yup the spuds went on to score and win that game… The Fat Conti ??

  24. Lets be fair and tell it as it is ok? Leicester are the current league champions and champions league quarter finalists, they had a whole week, well rested to prepare for this game. Arsenal are recovering and slowly getting back some confidence and fluidity in their game, played 120 mins on sunday and needed to rotate various players who were obviously not fully recovered and who were certain ” red flags” for muscular injuries if theyd started ( ie, ox, ramsey, holding) Leicester did not deserve anything at all, they were ultra defensive, yes worked hard I agree but its easier to defend with 9 behind the ball for vast periods of the game. Arsenal controlled most of the game, it was Leicester that rode their luck, not Arsenal. 3 hard earned points.

  25. Can’t believe our fans are going on so much at AS7 – the ball was thrown hard at his shoulder and bounced up into his face – maybe he did make a lot of it, but it must’ve hurt, yet nobody is going on about the challenge on OG – that was a shocker and could’ve left him paralysed. He was still holding his back when he went off. AS7 is working for our team, and as long as he does that I support him, only wish a few others put as much effort in. I wasn’t impressed with the behaviour of the Leicester team or their fans, thought they were better than that – they bizarrely seem to think they are a ‘big’ club now, and have all the attitude but none of the attributes.

    1. Dam straight the defender mustve thought OG. was a step ladder brutal tackle.
lf it was Arsenals Xhaka probably wouldve been red card and more bad press but cause its leicester no one says nothing

      1. Sanchez fell like he had been shot a minute after the ball had made contact and he didn’t hit his face. Tony Adams would be rolling in his seat at Granada!

Club of morals and class my Arsenal!

  26. Are you on drugs? Xhaka had an excellent game. Cech, Koscielny too. What’s your problem, dude? Yes, we won the game via deflected shot. Who cares? 3 points is 3 points, and if it takes a bit of luck, I’ll take it. Don’t forget it was a clean sheet too.
