Arteta promises to continues Arsenal’s attacking and entertaining style

As I explained yesterday, Arsene Wenger was well aware of Mikel Arteta’s qualities before he even retired from playing for Arsenal, and it appears that the Spaniard’s team-mates were also fully expecting Arteta to move up to management after he hung up his boots.

Arteta revealed in an interview in 2014: “My team-mates are always going “What are you going to do Miki? You’re going to be a manager, you should be a manager!” I know what the job means and I know how hard it is, especially when I look at the boss and see how many hours he puts in here. You need to sacrifice your family all over again, which I’ve done since I was 15. But I would love to manage a squad of players and staff – I’ve got it inside me, it’s true, and I want to do it…..”

He was also asked to describe how he would want a team under his control to act on the pitch, and he replied: “My philosophy will be clear. I will have everyone 120 per cent committed, that’s the first thing. If not, you don’t play for me. When it’s time to work it’s time to work, and when it’s time to have fun then I’m the first one to do it, but that commitment is vital.

“Then I want the football to be expressive, entertaining. I cannot have a concept of football where everything is based on the opposition. We have to dictate the game, we have to be the ones taking the initiative, and we have to entertain the people coming to watch us. I’m 100 per cent convinced of those things, and I think I could do it.

“I think you need to adapt. You can have an idea of a system, but you need to be able to transform it depending on the players you have – how much pace you have up front, how technical your team is, what types of risk you can take and whether your players are ready to take those risks.

“It’s important to analyse your players because you can’t always play the same way. There have to be different details and changes in how you approach things, and you have to look at how you can hurt whoever you are playing against. Is there something they don’t like to do? If so, we’re going to make them do plenty of it. Then the most important thing for the manager is that, the Friday before the game, you imagine what’s going to happen on the Saturday. And if what happens on Saturday is not what I had planned, then it’s not been good enough from me.”

So this is definitely not a new idea for Arteta, and it looks like he has been driven to become a manager even before he stopped playing. He has certainly inherited the philosophy of both Guardiola and Wenger to take the game to your opponent and to attack and entertain, which has also been one of Le Prof’s main aims as Arsenal boss.

Perhaps Arteta really could be a star manager of the future?

  1. No offence to Arteta but we need a manager with experience who has already done it all.
Giving Arteta the job is proof gazidis and kroenke will always go for the cheapest option.

    1. zidane didn’t have any form of experience before he came to Madrid
Arteta has even worked under Guardiola but Zidane came out of the blues
look at how he has transformed Madrid!
Not really impressed with Arsenal but let’s give Arteta a chance

      1. Zidane having long list of world class players…. We don’t have that list… We don’t have Ronaldo, Marcelo, Pepe, Isco, Bale, Kroose…
Our forwards can only be matched with Madrid one…

        1. You are right and that was Wenger ‘s problem and entire recruitment team was not up for the job and was looking for cheap and quick fix when quality players are Available for dissent price he will start dithering till the price skyrocketed and I am really glad transfers have been taken over with Arsenal management but they tried to get involved in transfers and Wenger was a stambolic block

      2. Zidane was coaching real Madrid B for 3-4 season in the second tier Spanish league so no he definitely has managerial experience and an indispensable squad not monkeys like mustafi and Xhaka. This is a horrible idea but all we can do is live in denial and pray that everything will be fine

        1. Exactly! We know it’s a bad idea like driving off a cliff to beat traffic but we gonna do it anyway because we are Arsenal, we have club values that must be maintained and generally, that’s how we like to do things, the hard way!

    2. I do really agree with you that Arteta will be a fantastic manager at Arsenal.I am from Africa From Sudan, and I am watching Arsenal not just to win games or titles; for me it is wider than that. The basic thing for me and the majority of Arsenal fans, I think, is the way Arsenal play, the enjoy, the entertainment and the beauty of football. I do not think there is a person enjoy his favorite team winning with awful football; at least for me this is not happening. And, back to the topic, why do I think Arteta will be suit for Arsenal? The answer should be logic to convince the readers and I will try to give that kind of answer. So, I will start from the above interview… in this interview, Arteta gave perfect answers to the way of football that is exactly agree with Arsenal’s philosophy. This man had given those answers four years ago. What that means? Simply it means that man had these magnificent ideas in his head all the time; and during those four years, he has been developing these ideas under the supervision of the best two persons who adapt these ideas in the world Wenger and Guardiola. So, I think, this philosophy has been developed well through the past four year.
Many people shall claim that Arteta has no experience as a manager and that will seriously affect his career as a manager of a great club like Arsenal. I can easily give claim against this opinion and that as: first: Arteta needs experience to deal with the tough conditions happen during games and I think a man that spend last seven years facing those condition as a leader with Wenger at Arsenal and assistant manager with Guardiola at City can easily deal with those issues and maintain any problem faces him. And what support my idea is that I suppose any person has the ability to learn and if you could not learn for seven years that means you will not learn for ever; and I do not think a man who has the trust of Guardiola has no ability to learn.
Second: Arteta is a son of Arsenal; he knows everything at Arsenal and everyone at Arsenal Knows him and will try to stand with him especially the main aspect which is the players and that will give him the advantage over any other candidate.
The last thing: I think it appears that Arsenal is going to be managed technically and administratively by the concept of teamwork and that from the existence of Mislintat and Sanhily at the Club. So, that will make life much easier for Arteta and give him great support technically and administratively.
Finally, I hope I made logical answer for the next manager at Arsenal.
      Thnak you very much

      1. Wow lots of newbies popping up on here in support of Wenger. A suspicious mind would wonder half w and why lol

          1. Cause he’s caught in a trap, he can’t walk out, because he loves you too much baby ..why can’t you see…..

          2. Gooner P,
It does make one wonder why anyone would take the time to register who is new anyway?
            Maybe some insecurity issues perhaps?

            Omar,
Wonderful to know that our fanbase stretches across the world and be assured your opinions count to the vast majority of gooners.
It is always good, to read and digest other peoples views, whether they agree with mine or not.
I thought this particular post (Omar) was sensible, well thought out and I congratulate you sir, along with most of those that have acknowledged your post.
So much more meaningfull than pictures of smiling faces, piles of faeces and negative comments.
We are all awaiting the decision as to our new manager, so, until it’s announced, I guess Artetas views are interesting but not yet pertinent.
Meanwhile, look forward to reading more from you.

      2. Well said Omar. I think all fans love the free flowing attacking football, we also need players to get stuck in when needed, if we gave it everything in a game and lost we could still be proud that our team tried, unfortunately this has not been the case for some years.

I wanted change for many years, I didn’t expect it to be in the form of Arteta ( if we believe the speculation) however I will be open and supportive.

It looks like we will operate under a new model. We have been linked with plenty of defenders without a new manager, so the new model is already rolling, we brought Bamy without Wenger.

Anxious but excited for the future.

        Billy

    3. You can’t judge one’s capability unless tested.Arteta might a hidden gold. When you look at the current global coaches, it’s only few who ave tactics. Most of them only play the game and end up winning.

  2. Fair enough we all love attacking football and it should be played that way but defending is so important ask Suarez he ended up crying against palace shirt over his head! Don’t sell his dreams wen every1 knows the defence is our problems! We conceded the same amount of goals to the team’s bottom half of the table! Average! How are we going to sort out the defence by hiring Santi as a coach? Don’t get me wrong Santi is my guy but our backline is in shambles! Long as the board makes a profit they don’t care about us the fans! Stan shud sell up and go offer curry n LeBron contracts! Liverpool n utd was against American owners we all saw they are just here 4 business nothing more! No matter wat abrahmovic does at Chelsea the decions he makes the supporters stick by him coz he loves Chelsea like it’s his kid! If url think we gna overtake the top 6 url are all deluded just sit and let it sink in that all clubs above us will be strengthening it’s gna be a long season this 1 coming up! Ivan and Josh put me off the world cup! I beg the season ticket holders don’t fall for these peoples lies it’s urls hard earned cash url have the power to let’s urls voice be heard I’m tired of the disrespect our club gets we made the premier league and its about time we rise again

  3. We don’t want Wengers way to continue – that’s why we are looking for a new manager. We need a tactician not someone because he was cheap…

  4. Sources close to the coaching staff say Arteta is the ‘professor’ .Pep allowed him to manage the team against Arsenal the last season when pep was to lose his fourth consecutive game and told Arteta the team his yours,Arteta made changes in the second half and city equalised and later city scored the winner.

    1. So Arteta managed city for one game and now he’s ready for arsenal Laughable admin

  5. Raul and Sven will guide Arteta to be a very good coach. They are literally in control of arsenal in this rebuilding process, Gazidas has the trust of kreonke to restructure this club

    1. My friend stop this Raúl/Sven hype.Sven will be just a membre of the Manager staff (not the other way around).Raúl will be there to negociates contracts.

      1. Mislintat appears to love power and control …if not why did he had a quarrel over signing a player with Tuschel?

    2. Counsel-I completely agree with you.Its Gazidis who has put his head on the chopping block. Its Sven M & Raul who will be pulling all the strings. All Arteta (If he is chosen ) has to do is COACH.This could just work you know. And at the end of the day there is no guarantee Allegri or whoever would succeed.I also believe it says a lot about Arteta as a person. He knows the state of the Club.He knows what’s wrong with the Team.He knows the fan base have been vocal and divided. He knows the Owner is despised. To take on the job with that to contend with says a lot about the Man.The fact he will be the cheapest option is not the point if he turns out to be the correct choice.
Now please can you stop posting articles I agree with as it has completely disrupted me Karma.

  6. Attack attack attack. Where have I seen this before? When we conceded 5 goals against Bayern all we were doing was attacking…6 goals against Mancity all we were doing was attacking. I hate how some coaches/wannabe coaches seem to brush off defending as some kind of evil that they can and will happily do without. If you play Barcelona for goodness sake you MUST defend. If you play Bayern you MUST defend. You must set up your team to play your opponents. That is why Atletico Madrid are in the Europa final while we are here languishing in 6th place mediocrity with 13 games lost and 51 goals conceded in the league. If this gang-ho attack approach is what Arteta is all about even more reason to not hire him. In fact, we must acquire the most defensive coach out there to fix our backline and stop the humiliating pastings. WE MUST LEARN TO DEFEND!!!

      1. He says he wants the team to take initiative, dictate the game and play entertaining football. That is the kind of football Pochettino plays. We forget, Pochettino has beasts such as Toby Aldeweireld, Vertonghen, Davinson Sanchez, Danny Rose, Trippier as defenders! Wanyama, Eric Dier as DMs. Even bloody Kyle Walker couldn’t get a game at Tottenham. We can’t play entertaining football because our backline cannot be trusted to stamp out the fire when everyone else is bombing forward. We MUST fix the defense first before we talk about entertaining football otherwise it will be 6th place again with 60 goals conceded this time next season.

        1. With or without Arteta we will still be a top 6…

Spud has produce a good generation of players….

Essentially, Kane is the one that is powering them upwards…

take Kane out and they will be below us…..

Same for Liverfool…..Sallah is keeping them at 4 spot…….without Sallah magical goals…..where willl they be?

hence signing Auba is a good deal….this guy guarantee goals

  7. Sir chips retiring soon is Josh going to be more involved at afc coz that’s was his role in America!!! Is Ivan worried he might loose his power with Josh around? Is Ivan appointing this structure so he can have people who answer to him? Arteta is a unnecessary gamble! We cud have got Enrique or allegri if we forced even potchettino is making noises in spurs! Ivan don’t want a manager who might go against him!!! It’s a proven fact we going 4 arteta coz the ppl above him jobs won’t be at risk!!! My fellow gooners empty seats will only make change coz empty seats on American tv don’t look good

    1. It’s not a fact, proven or otherwise. Its speculation which may ultimately be correct – or not!

  8. Please I beg da administration of arsenal club,we are tired of ur decisions choosing da cheapest option like bringing an assistant coach hopping to compete with his boss, really do u expect our team again to be in da top 4? Obviously not don’t make us stop watching arsenal u better choose an experienced coach if u want to compete other wise it seems u r after making profits but u don’t care about yr fans.thnx

  9. Arteta would be disastrous for US….he will have the WHOLE fanbase getting on his back at the first deafet and it will be poisonous all over again….

  10. As for exciting play Arteta
    was the pass sideways
    pass backwards master
the quintessential pass the ball to death specialist.
If Arteta wants to be a manager he should coach
the the Blackpool under 17’s for 2 years.
Then Manage Blackpool first team in League 1
and get them promoted to the Championship.
Then get Blackpool promoted to the PL.
Keep Blackpool in the PL 3 seasons.
7 seasons minimum working your way up
and “earning” his coaching and manager’s qualifications.
Fast tracking, gifting appointing Arteta the Arsenal managers job
would be about maintaining the Kroenke Wenger Gazidiz dynasty
    by installing quisling puppet Arteta.
    Nefarious nepotism stinks.
Lets hope we get a real manager who has worked his way up
and earned the right to manage our great club.

    1. So all you guys forgot to demand to also be able to choose the manager when you demanded Wenger out. Reap what you sow!

  11. Everyone would have perfect clip on hair with him in charge but apart from that…

    “LEGO-HAIR” THE ARSENAL MOVIE ?

  12. i am amazed the way some people look at mater…..all this tactics noise make me laugh….players and luck won you game and not coaches…..gurdiola 70% succes in barca is messi, and after that….at bayern, he won what anybody as coach can won…..the league. bayern still won league after him….coaches won league with man city with lower budget than him….dont know why you think guardiola can do in arsenal what he did at city….

  13. Hi all , Arteta will be a good coach even AW was non entity at first but become a great manager . Even great manager comes from somewhere not appreciated at first pep was a player for BARCELONA . Lets give Arteta chance especially if he becomes tough with his player like pep does will a great success at Arsenal . Some players were too reliant on AW not blasting them no matter what they do . Arteta will not be like that if you don’t perform you are out of the squad of the day . Warning to OZIL and XKA

  14. We should go for managers who has little hair, I think its a recipe for success. Ive had enough of managers who has a full set of hair at 60 years old

    1. If this is intended as a witticism , it falls flat And if you actually believe what you have written, well, I worry for you!

  15. Roman is tipped to reduce the transfer funds of the next Chelsea manager….

Arteta will have it slightly easier now….

However, Arsenal fans still insist on Kroenke to replace Chelsea as the new moneybag team by spending big??

  16. Arteta might be a good manager, its not about the experience.
but the real problem is the board they are showing no real ambitions
I think denis can be a good manager ? better than henry and veira

  17. If Arteta is appointed it the fans that will make him fail.
Support the team, support the players, support the manager (whoever until he fails on his own).

  18. I’m already afraid but now I see Brenda’s name still being mentioned in the press and betting. Be very very afraid.

  19. I wonder if Arteta and Viera would have made the shortlist at any of the top four teams.

  20. Unbelievable! Worse than Moyes with Utd. Arteta is the absolutely worse choice. The board are unworthy of having the care of our beloved club. Shame on them.

  21. Arteta brings too much baggage with existing players. The new manager will have to get the best out of the existing players, given that Kroenke and board won’t provide as much as required to upgrade the squad.
I would prefer Rafa Benitez (Gazidis is a fan) due to his record, particularly at Newcastle. It appears the “Arsenal project” post Arsene Wenger is too difficult with insufficient funds on offer for most well credentialed managers, other than Ancellotti. A cheeky bid for Conte may be in order.

    1. Ozziegunner we’re just clutching at straws we’d both like to think someone rather than Arteta coming in but reality is it’s Arteta, he’s cheap, he’ll do what he’s told and will play wengerball – Pass, pass, sideways, backwards and don’t worry about defending it’s not the arsenal way! We can’t challenge under this owner and board and I think us fans need to accept that rather than bury our heads in the sand but love the optimism buddy ?

      1. Yes, i’m an optimist; I won’t accept defeat until the announcement is made! (LOL)

  22. How I wish usmanrov was the highest share holder at arsenal. All this rubbish won’t even happen. That’s why nobody wants to sell their shares to him because he is ready to buy and end this mediocrity in this club. A billionaire who is ready to spend quality money to get glory. Am sure aterta is the least person on his mind. I have previously said it Please Kroenke should leave with wenger. To kill a snake you have to chop it’s head off.

  23. Putting Arteta in charge of Arsenal at this stage when the person to take over is inheriting a team full of problems is like sending a rookie heavyweight in against AJ. Arteta needs time to learn his craft to understand not just tactics and how to win but also how to manage players personally and emotionally. Football matches are won before a ball is kicked. It’s stupid of him, perhaps even arrogant, to give him that responsibility. One day he may be the perfect manager for Arsenal but right now he’s about as qualified to manage Arsenal as Justin Beiber is to take the reigns at the playboy mansion..

  24. Arteta is to be appointed as head coach in the new structure & not a manager you guys should know the difference. AFC fans wyne about everything, he’s not been appointed & we’re complaining again. Wenger was a nobody until hee transformed Arsenal & English football in general. Let’s support & encourage who ever comes in & hope for the best.. “LET’s NOT HATCH THE CHICKS BEFORE THE EGG IS LAID”.. If you know you know.. AFC4EVER…

    1. Nobody? Winning league at Monaco doesn’t mean anything?
Equating “unknown” Wenger to English fans with inexperienced Arteta, SMH.

      Wow

  25. Well , Mr. Admin, you make the case for the defence(of Arteta) very well. It is a fine article and interesting, though I am sure the large majority of us see the actual argument as hogwash, albeit well argued and well written hogwash. Whichever way you cut the cake, no one can deny the simple truth. And THAT TRUTH IS, that Arteta has never ever managed a team at any senior level before. NEVER. NOT ONCE. ZILCH, IN FACT. And that FACT trumps mere rhetoric, however well constructed that rhetoric may be.

  26. Omar Alhawary made a good point, Arteta has seemed like he’s been training for this for a long time. He and coaching was brought up in articles going back four years, Arteta outlined his desire to become a manager one day. So he’s been really paying attention to what he likes about Arsene’s sessions and what he’d do differently. He’d have done the same whilst at city, but unfortunately it sounds like Klopp kept him out of the loop a bit as I read that Arteta was not overly involved with practice sessions, he was more a go between the players and Pep, his job to let them be heard and then report back to Pep. Pep must have believed that Arteta was there to learn the repetitions/drills, tactics, and anything that might help him make the step up faster. If that were Wenger, Wenger would invite them to see everything and to come to him if you have any questions on the set up/routines. Pep is the type that would make you work for it, keeps his enemies closer kinda guy.

  27. Most coaches rely on players, the guardiola that’s being used as a standard, Barça still won trophies after he left (though their dominance reduced), but he didn’t win anything that wasn’t won at Bayern before he came and after he left, city has won the league 3 times in the last decade and last summer was their highest spending summer
The things Allegri did at juventus, conte did it before leaving, Ancelotti never won the league at Madrid, never won the ucl at Bayern.

  28. Now, I’m not saying Arteta is the best option, but he may not be a bad option after all, he’s played under Wenger, learnt under Guardiola, and he talks about changing his tactics based on opponents and we all know he can be very strict(one thing wenger lacks)
The only thing he doesn’t have is experience, and boy, we overrate experience at times, How much has allardyce epl experience given him, moyes kept everton in the top half for almost 7 years, always close to top 4, van gaal led Netherlands to 3rd place at d last World Cup, nothing to show for it when he came to epl
Maybe all arteta needs is a chance and a few signings
