Atletico tell Arsenal to forget about Costa transfer

There will be football clubs and their managers all over Europe steeling themselves for the opening of the winter transfer window. For Arsenal fans and Arsene Wenger, however, the worry is not that another club will come in to take any of the best players, but whether we will be able to bring in the player, or players, that can give the Gunners the extra boost needed to keep going in the race for the Premier League title.

One of those players, the fans hope, is going to be a striker, with Olivier Giroud’s goals having dried up and Arsenal being one injury away from a serious problem. Many fans I know are hoping that Arsenal make a move for the Atletico Madrid man Diego Costa, who has been on fire this season.

According to the director of football at the Spanish club though, Arsenal would be wasting their time. As reported by Sky Sports, Jose Luis Caminero has declared that the 25-year old forward has no intention of leaving his La Liga team. And having fired Atletico into the next round of the Champions League, as well as keeping pace with Barcelona at the top of La Liga, you can understand why.

Caminero said, “Right now Costa does not think of leaving, he is contracted to Atletico.

“He has renewed with us which is important. He has shown that he wants to continue at this club.”

There were media reports in the summer that Costa turned down a lucrative move to Liverpool before signing a new deal with Madrid. The lack of Champions League football could have been a factor, but it does look like Arsenal would have to wait until the summer if Costa is the man Wenger wants.

Assuming Costa is not available, who should Arsenal be going for?

Does he not have a buy-out clause? The bottom line is money talks in football these days and he would probably join a League 2 team if they paid him enough(hypothetically of course).

Pay him good money and he’ll come.

Not all of them are money gobblers. Arteta took a pay cut to join Arsenal and realize his dream of playing CL football, for instance.

Arteta was not a big name that all big teams were fighting for, so when the Arsenal chance came calling he could not turn it down, he was about 28 and this was his only chance of playing for a big club and play Cl football.

If he’s got a buy-out-clause the club doesn’t have a say. If the interested clubs meets the clause then its up to the player to choose if he wants to leave

If I were Diego Costa, this is my thoughts:
      – until the end of this season, be a hero in Atletico Madrid; this will also significantly boost my value in the summer
      – in the summer, find good money to end my career; I will look even prettier in front of many clubs (Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal, Monaco … to name a few)

Were we gonna get him in January before? H*ll NO! Not when they are doing well domestically and continentally. If we finish this season well, I think we still stand a chance next summer(if we show real intent)

Any better striker than Giroud can push us to EPL victory. Our midfield and wide players create enough chances to win matches.

Loic Remy hasn’t been performing to badly and knows how to put the ball in the back of net. He’s currently on 10 goals for Newcastle and with his pace will benefit from our creative players. He may be a cost effective solution till the end of the season if no-one more certified is available.
Is he good enough for arsenal though… what do my fellow gooners think?

Sorry gunners but with pod and theo back don’t think wenger will look for a striker in jan so don’t get your hopes up and for me and I know I’m a very few I think giroud hold up play and he’s work for the team is important for our team he’s just going through a bad patch atm in front of goal but I believe he will start scoring again soon so I’m not panicked by our strike force COYG

i agree with you totally on Giroud. But what if he gets injured? He has been playing almost every match. Podolski and walcott can certainly score but they are not typical strikers.. Hope there was someone very clinical to spearhead our attack.

I also don’t think we will go for a striker bendner is the back up for giroud in January we will get ox and sanogo back so our Att wil be at its peak in terms of depth the only way I see this happening is if wenger loans two off sanogo afobe ryo or sell park

We’re in CL also. We’re at the top of the EPL. So with a buyout clause payment and a higher salary i think there’s a fair chance. The question is Arsenal willing to pay that much?? Do they have that money in their kitty??? Hope so..

Well as their director of football he’s hardly gonna come out and say he wants to leave. Atletico Madrid have a lot of debt and probably would accept a £30-£32m bid. Reports say that Atletico are looking to buy Benteke to replace Costa. Hoping we sign a striker in January as Giroud is lagging in form and looks tired

We don’t need one of the top strikers in the world to win the title. We just need someone better and more consistent than Giroud. We need a striker who will finish off Ozil’s great assists.

Mr Wenger, I know it’s a bit late but for Christmas please could Arsenal have Lewandowski

Rate this comment: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  11. Twig

Lewandowski is our best chance, and here’s reason why
He’s in the last year of his contract, and will leave for free in the Summer to join any club he likes

It is in Dortmund’s own best interest to sell him now to make some cool cash. I feel a £10 million bid would do, seeing as he has only 6 months on his contract.

Dortmund would prefer Lewandowski to go abroad. It’ll be a bitter pill to swallow to lose Gotze and Lewandowski in quick succession to their arch-rivals

Dortmund’s small problem would be whether to keep Lewandowski to help in their title charge or whether to sell. It’s a tough one. But their domestic form hasn’t been that f a n t a s t i c this season.
Our only problem is if Lewandowski doesn’t want to come to Arsenal. He has reportedly told all interested clubs to back off as he knows exactly where he’s going. “I will reveal my future next year. No one needs to get in touch with me anymore”

you are 100% correct, he is the only world class striker that must go, but every team knows this. maybe Szez can help persuade his Polish teammate? i hope

For the last time, Lewandowski has stated his mind is made up where he’s going next. If it’s not Arsenal then there’s nothing we can do.

I’d rather have Reus. He’s a proper left wing player & a dynamic playmaker (like Suarez). He can play as a striker too. If our Germans can talk him into joining arsenal we would benefit greatly. Have Reus on the left wing, Theo on the right and Santi in the middle with Ozil slightly ahead of him and behind Podolski/Giroud/ world class striker we all want =. Countless trophies!!!

Read and artical earlier on jack wilshir replacing ramsey my personal thought on the subject would be putting thomas roscky in that role or anywhere in the midfield doubt any of us can fight off that the guy brings something that jack just doesn’t have put aside jack is a england international looking at him closely he performs at times when he gets away with running at defenders but most of the time he looses the ball and drops 2 his knees and we all think his injuried so thomas is my player 2 replace ramsey

Everybody has got to remember that if we lose giroud to injury, then we are gonna rely on poldi as striker most likely. However, he is injury prone, we have bad luck with injury prone players, for example diaby, rvp, poldi, rosicky etc. We must shift bendtner and bring in somebody who is more of a “striker” than giroud! We want somebody to challenge him, if we had a suarez or aguero up front, then girouds stats would surely be shown for what they are, “unacceptable”. Remember the phantom injuries which struck verminator and wilshere??? We need at least one prolific back up signing and not in midfield. Preferably a striker, if not then a winger who can get goals. Btw, I love giroud, I am saddened by his lackluster displays after having such a great start to season. He should be finishing on at least 25 goals this season, not looking good so far. I really feel we will all be chuffed at end of season when we lift title! COYG

so now we make Giroud the scapegoat for Ozil? Shameful. I am a gunnner fan, not just an Ozil fan. though I bought an Ozil kit the day we signed him. this squad is on the top of the table after Boxing Day, and they have had but one striker. something has gone right? we turn on a player when on top of the table and treat him worse than RvP… we all want ANOTHER striker to bolster the lineup, I suggest take your venom and apply on Liverpool, Chelsea, City… those are who we fight.

If Wenger does not try his best to sign a striker then we are going to regret it like we did in 2007-2008, everyone begged him to sign a defender and Defensive midfielder, but wenger got too cocky at it all came tumbling down. I hope he does not make the same mistake this season.

According to Graham Hunter, a Spanish based journalist working for Sky sports, (I’m unsure how reliable he is) Diego Costa has to “believe in the clubs project” in terms of what the club plans to do in the future etc.
Money is only a small problem in Costa’s case, don’t get me wrong, he will be very expensive, but the real test will be luring him to join Arsenal.
Wenger, if he actually wants him of course, will have to persuade Diego Costa that with him the club will have a stability in terms of success, be it winning trophies or many games, (I believe with costa that we will-no doubt)
Costa will not be lured by money alone and he is at a top European club who are just behind Barca currently-a January move would be difficult.
If we comfortably finish in CL by fighting for the title and win a trophy this year, and get Costa come summer, then we will gradually become a top force.
For now Costa will have to be put on hold-he’s interested in his current project.

Expect Wenger not to buy in January, what with Sonogo coming back and our goal scoring wingers Walcott and Podolski. Of course I wish he would! Giroud needs someone to challenge him when he has a bad run of form, and to give him a rest! He is playing 90 minutes a game after all.

I’m hoping (against hope) for Lewandowski or Pato this summer. These sort of classy options would be more plausible if we can win it this year. I think Pato will be a world star in the next few years if he lands at a big club.

SPEND some more $$$ Wenger! You know you want tooooo.

Costa was never a feasible option for us; too expensive, Atletico performing well and I don’t think he’s too keen on a mid-season transfer. I don’t expect Wenger to buy another striker besides Batshyuai maybe. At this point an extra defender, defensive midfielder and a left winger are bigger priority. Podolski and Walcott have shown they both can score.

I believe if Arsenal want costa badly we will get him all we have to do is to wave a wad of Euros on the Atletico noses to have them drooling as they sign the transfer papers. personally I would love D.Costa to join arsenal he is a beast of a striker but I also know it is not tenable in January.what we need in January is a stop gap measure and so far we are not badly enough with Theo and Poldi back to fitness. There are only three strikers I would love to see in arsenal coulours next summer are D.costa,Suarez or J matinez.I firmly believe le prof knows what is good for us and he will get us a good striker after all he got us OZIL.
