Bernd Leno error gives Brentford win over Arsenal

The Gunners had yet another behind-doors friendly yesterday as Brentford were the secret visitors at Arsenal’s training ground. Again Emery gave all his players some time on the pitch as they build up fitness ahead of their flight to Singapore on Sunday. Despite the secrecy, Football.London got wind of it, and reported the game as follows….

….But whereas Arsenal thumped Crawley 9-0 on Wednesday, they found things far more difficult against a Brentford side that contained former Gunners player Nico Yennaris.

It was the Bees who went in front at London Colney but a superb goal from Aubameyang levelled things up, following on from his hat-trick at Boreham Wood and another against Crawley on Wednesday.

But it was Brentford who claimed a late winner when Leno failed to deal with a ball into the box, allowing the Championship side to return home with a 2-1 victory.

Emery will not be concerned by the result, however, with Arsenal’s head coach using the two games in the space of 24 hours to build up fitness levels and to try to drill his ideas into his players during match situations ahead of the trip to Singapore.

It is great that Aubameyang has knocked in 5 goals in just three half-games which augurs well for our season ahead, but I’m sure Emery will have been a little perturbed by Leno’s mistake….

  1. It’s only preseason. But then again Cech dropped a clanger on his first premier league start for us

    1. I just wrote about that on the last topic!! Yes a loss to West Ham…. I had so much expectation… was absolutely gutted after the match!!!

  2. He could be Szczesny 2.0, whose errors could be mitigated by the hard work of all outfield players to press the opponents

Victor Valdes was also prone to errors, but all Barcelona attackers pressed hard from the front. Which made their midfielders able to intercept many threats and subsequently made their defenders’ job easier

Emery’s high pressing strategy sounds like Klopp’s and Guardiola’s strategies. He just needs to find the players that have enough stamina to play like that and kick out the lacklustre ones

  3. I said a while ago about Leno being error prone.
Fingers crossed our coaching can help him become a better GK.
At the moment though we shouldn’t be writing off Cech, he is a safer pair of hands currently, might have dipped in form over the years of poor GK coaching but still made more saves per goal last season than Leno.

    1. Midkemma I’d stick with Cech too for this season, I still think he’s got quality! With our defence being so bad we would have made De gea look like a national league keeper at least we didn’t spend 70 million on a keeper named after a woman ?

  4. I would like Leno’s mistakes to be seriously looked into by the coaching team before the season starts. Unai has been labelled as Mr. details, so let him extensively review this and help Leno work on them.

    – Is it that he likes to play the ball out a lot?
    – Is it that he takes too many risks (Lloris vs Mario)?
    – Is he a sweeper keeper ala Neur?
    – Does he have challenges with crosses into the box?
    – Does he have confidence issues to command the box?

I for one do not want to go through the pain of watching the same mistakes Ospina & Cech made last season. I am still hopeful Leno to take over the number spot & be more solid. Not looking at it as his first mistake but rather looking at it from last season onwards.

    1. Cech is fine. It’s the defenders that expose him so often who are shite, and this new ones won’t make a difference

  5. Doesn’t mean he will have errors once season starts, but error prone keepers rarely ever stop making blunders completely. Not to say the best keepers dont have their moments either (hi De Gea), but you dont want that to become your reputation

  6. No surprises here. Leno’s errors was a concern raised by many on this site. I hope he comes through but my general expectations of him will be modest. Same goes for Sokratis.

    1. “Leno’s errors was a concern raised by many on this site.” Yeah, I’m sure the teenagers commenting on this blog know more about this goalkeeper than Sven Mislintat and Raul Sanllehi. If only you had all warned him before we purchased Leno! I only they had done as much research on him as the commenters on this blog!

Just image how much better we’d be doing if we had teenage armchair pundits taking charge of our transfers instead of two of the most well respected professionals in this field.

      1. No-one mentioned anything about his errors until an article from Germany came out mentioning his pros and cons. His con said: his concentration for ninety minutes can be questionable which led to avoidable mistakes. After that everybody was a head scout. Before that everybody was glad we were targeting a new GK, glad that he was young and esp glad that Mislintat identified him. To my knowledge that is exactly how it went.

        1. and you can look at bundesliga stats and see how many errors he’s had. People didn’t need an article to find this basic info, lol.

      2. @D
These armchair pundits raised alarm with the potential signings of Welbeck, Mertesacker and Jenkinson to name but a few. Please Sir, can you tell me how those signings turned out?

  7. In the meantime, Deyan Iliev’s contract has just been extended

They cannot have Cech, Martinez, Macey and Iliev to push Leno to perform

Maybe two of these GKs would be sold, and I bet they are Cech and Martinez

  8. Cech has to start as number 1 Leno was a poor signing whoever scouted him and convinced manager to sign him should be sacked I am not a scout but looked at many videos when we were in for him made numerous errors yeh he would pull off some fantastic saves but his errors outweigh the good stuff he would do will cost us so many points if he starts in the prem league as number 1!!

    1. Where did you see the errors, I’d be interested to see those clips myself as it never shows errors on youtube highlight reels.

    2. The problem is that we don’t sign to address our weaknesses but for the joy of sign. Yes Leno is a good goalie aside the individual errors, but why should we go for another of such keeper when we were suppose to address that. I’m hoping that things turn out well

    3. Agree and same goes for Socrates, utter rubbish from German league but anyways we are arsenal looking for freebees and cheap stuff. It’s not too long fans will start hounding Energy and history repeats. Excep torrera none of the other signings inspire confidence.the main concern is the lack of funds for proven players and lies by those in control .

  9. Championship club sides are not well known for causing surprises and the Bees from Brentford are no exception to this surprise causing as they’ve stung the Gunners right there on their training ground – London Colney with a 1-2 away win scoreline defeat in a training match exercise. To me, this is a shameful home training match shocking defeat suffered by the Gunners coming after they’ve just taken Boreham wood to the cleaners and beaten Crawley to make us the Gooners start believing we could see a new post Wenger Gunners team who’ll play with much competence, agility, desire, robustness, drive and great winning mentality.

But with this poor showing by the Gunners in this home training match against the Championship side Brentford has shown the weakness of lack of super striking force in the Arsenal forward to deliver in the face of adversity is still there. Let’s not make the mistake about it, Arsenal need a top grade quality striker signing this summer of at least 20 League goals per season kind like the consistent goals scoring Aubameyang. We were told Lacazette is one when Arsenal signed him. But that has proved to wrong from him for Arsenal since he was signed. Apart of his occasional running up to grab a goal for Arsenal in last season in the PL and maybe in the EL when he returned from the sideline. Nothing else tangible has come from Laca for Arsenal in terms of good goals scoring returns for Arsenal. Should he be sold alongside Welbeck this summer to acquire one top grade striker of not less that 6ft tall who can score with his feet and head consistently. Yes!

    1. Did you watch the game, without watching it you can’t really come to any conclusions. Was it a smash and grab, did we change players allot whilst they kept a solid look, where we tired from playing day after day and it caught up with players not prepared yet. We know f**k all of what happened besides the scorers and the keeper making a late mistake. We’re gonna lose games, and against lower opposition we’ll get stung, you need to prepare yourself for when it counts and it still happens, its unavoidable.

          1. ?Yes and how many goals did Lacazette score in the games following his return from rehabilitation after his knee operation?

    2. What are you on about? How do we need another striker when we have aubameyang and lacazette. You say we need another striker and then describing the type we need but all you said matched what aubameyang is. Please stop with the overreaction, aubameyang scored over 40 goals for dortmund in his last full season so i don’t know the striker you want. Its just a friendly, just as we shouldn’t overeact to a 8-0 win, we shouldn’t to a 2-1 loss as well.

    3. Thank God you are not involved with the Arsenal setup. A closed game behind doors, you have no idea what the team was or how they set up, people like you should not comment on what you don’t know.

    4. Wow…you’re actually the worst commentator on this thread. Nothing you said had any merit or value, and we are all dumber for having read it.

      Thank you.

    5. Samuel…..This was a game designed to give all the squad a game and to up fitness levels, don’t get your knickers in a twist about it. Chill out man !!

    6. It is foolish to take much notice of pre-season games where constant changes are made during games and who knows how the teams fitness is by true comparison. PRE-SEASON IS WELL KNOWN ACROSS FOOTBALL FOR WEIRD AND UNACCOUNTABLE RESULTS, SO BE SMART AND IGNORE THEM. To judge a match you have not seen and know little about is daft. And you are quite wrong on Lacazette; his goal stats are good . We would be mad to sell him and we WON’T!

  10. Please Admini, I’ve edited my above comment to read as below.

      1. Lacazette suffered a knee injury, so please check his goal scoring record in the games following his return from rehabilitation after his knee operation.

  11. Samuel are you sure you understand football? Some of best strikers in the world are under 6ft. You seem a joke. I won’t bother to read any more of your comments.

    1. Don’t be bothered by his stupid post. lol we have lacazette and aubameyang which should give us at WORSE 15 and 20 goals respectively. Right now we cannot accommodate both unless auba plays left forward/winger. Our attacking department is pretty strong and the only thing it needs is a young scoring winger/forward e.g rashford at man u who can come off the bench when we need a goal and replace aubameyang when he eventually declines.

If Nelson or Emile Smith-Rowe can develop to take that role this season it would be nice.

  12. It’s a preseason match at a new club. The mistake means nothing as long as he doesn’t think about it too much.
Also, Im sure coaching staff and Cech will give him some advice.

    Nothing to be alarmed about

  13. Samuel please leave with Wenger. LoL

Leno is a good gk and a shot stopper. He just needs to Calm down.

  14. Dear gooners lets not over react on a game player in closed doors mistakes are common look at Laurent Koscienly banking ogs when he joined us but he has now established himself as a top flight. Leno will improve with time that was a first with too much pressure and new environment. We need a winger I disagree with the idea of signing a striker instead we need Kingsley Coman or Ousman Dembele on the wings.

  15. I don’t know much about Leno but I can tell you for free that when De Gea came to EPL he was shit 6months into his 1st Season but after that,You can’t mention Five world class keepers without his name. letz give him time, shall we?

  16. Degea made a lot of mistakes when he came to man u but now He is first 3 in the world…even almighty degea made blunders in the world cup, thus lets give our new goalie support rather demoralising comments.

  17. Lets not be so quick to judge. The game was like a drill to the players the mistake by Leno was one but lets not assume it will be frequent. As for the scores i believe its just a try and error of forms Emery will be using throughout the season change of tactics perhaps.
