Big doubts over summer Arsenal transfer rumour

So I have just seen one of the most recent bits of Arsenal transfer news regarding what Arsene Wengher did or was trying to do during the summer transfer window, although I think the word news could and should be replaced with the word rumour or even by the two words wild rumour, because I have serious doubts about the veracity of this one.

According to an Evening Standard report the prof was trying to sign the 21-year old Guinean player Naby Keita (no me neither) from his Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg. This revelation comes from the player himself and it was not just Arsenal that was after him, but a number of Premier League clubs including Manchester City and Liverpool.

According to Neita the reason he chose the unfashionable German Bundesliga club Red Bull Leipzig over any of the big English clubs was that he felt it was too early for him to go and play for a team in the Champions League, preferring to work on his game and prove his ability first.

He said, “Arsenal, Manchester City and Southampton were all interested in signing me and Liverpool as well, although I did not speak with their coach,” Keita told SportNet.

“I did not want to join a big Champions League club right away. It is too early for that. I want to prove myself in the Bundesliga first now.”

To be fair to the lad he is doing just that, scoring three goals already from central midfield and helping his team to second place in the German table. But is it believable that Wenger tried to sign Him? The Frenchman had already secured the transfer of Granit Xhaka, don’t forget, and had brought in Mohamed Elneny in January.

With those two fighting for a place with Coquelin and Ramsey, central midfield is almost certainly our most heavily contested area of the pitch, so do you think the young Leipzig player is telling fibs about this Arsenal transfer?

  1. And Lucas who is just settling down is out for 6six,i just pray and hope Oliver will deliver and stay fit ,cos that’s our only back up.

  2. We tried to sign a young player from Milan also who plays CDM. There is probably truth to this but was it inquiries or was it a bid, I think we would’ve heard if it was a bid. I think Leipzig stole another youth player the big clubs were all after, the young Scottish player who is said to have a big future.
