Can Gnabry play against Swansea? Do Arsenal have an option?

After Arsene Wenger rested most of his first choice Arsenal players for the league cup trip to West Brom, the Gunners should be able to field a well rested first team for the visit to the Liberty Stadium to face Swansea City on Saturday. This is great news for a squad depleted by injury, but there are a couple of things still concerning me.

Firstly, our Big F**king German Per Mertesacker played the whole 120 minutes and was on the end of a heavy challenge. So I assume that he will be rested against Swansea, because we can’t risk him picking up an injury because his body has not recovered properly. With Sagna and Vermaelen, this is not too much of a problem, but it does break up the partnership, and Swansea could cause us problems at the back.

The other worry is Serge Gnabry. The young German had a great league debut against Stoke, but was not as effective at West Brom, but that is not what’s worrying me. It’s the fact that he played 120 minutes on the back of that debut. Is he match fit enough to play a third game in a six days? He is young, but hasn’t been playing regularly so is not used to it.

Hopefully this will not be a problem, because I am struggling to think of a decent alternative. Gnabry is already covering for injuries, so who covers for him? Miyaichi? Akpom? Eisfeld? I guess we will have to wait and see…

Wenger likes the one up front, and against a team like Swansea who like to keep possession of the ball i think we need that extra man in midfield to control the game, we don’t want to play run around

The smartest option will be to play Akpom instead of Gnabry. First of all, he only played a total of 40 minutes on the pitch against westbrom so he should have more energy than Serge. Secondly, he seems more comfortable in the first team and his movement on the right was intelligent and calm. Serge can always come in as a substitute but for now, both players should be rotated on the right to fill in for walcot because one of these youth players alone cannot do what walcot does.

            My choice:

            Szczesny
            Sagna … Koscielny … Vermaelen … Gibbs
            Arteta … Flamini
            Ozil … Ramsey … Wilshere
            Giroud

This might sound crazy but our greatest attacking threat against westbrom was a certain right back called Jenkinson. At the moment, he can offer more on the right wing than any of these other young guns. Jenkinson has speed, first team experience and can cross the ball and shoots well. If we plan on allowing swansea have possesion and then hit them on the counter, Gnabry’s game is not suited to that but Jenkinson’s is. This idea might seem strange but it is not far fetched. Wenger has played Gibbs and Nacho on the right before. He can do the same with Sagna and Jenkinson.

    I would go with

    Sczez
    Sagan-Kos-Mert (or Verm) -Monreal
    Ramsey- Flamini
    Wilshere-Ozil-Gibbs
    Giroud

Theres no way any of the youngsters that started against West Brom could start. Maybe Apkom could sub later on. Gibbs started his career as a LW so i think he should pull a decent shift down there

very good shout. thought of this v stoke the other day.

very good protection down the left where michu or dyer regularly like to lurk!

will be very good defensive cover allround and I would like to thing we could nick it 1-0 or a repeat 2-0 of last year.

be very annoyed if we concede goals with that starting 11.

He is a good player, but we can’t afford (in the Premier League) to give players a ‘run out’, we should play our strongest 11, which Giroud has scored in every game bar 1 this season, Swansea are a tough opposition don’t under estimate them!

Its hard to predict what wenger would do bt he knows his squad so he’ll make the most efficient decision Im sure. But I think Ozil will be on the right with rosicky in the central attacking area…perhaps at time alternating with him. Its tricky thou because Ozil is usually all over the pitch popping up here n there. Dont be surprise if Ramsey is our winger thou…thts Wenger for ya!

@leroy, we actually dont have a choice. Walcot is injured so somebody has to fill his place. Akpom did okay against westbrom and is a prolific goal scorer for the reserves and england youth team. He is a goal threat and kept banging them in during preseaso at a time that walcot kept missing sitters. We cannot play with ten men so Akpom is one of the few options we have.

Arteta would struggle to beat his man on the right, Arteta (IMO) is the hub of our Midfield he’s the one who feeds the ball into the likes of Ozil and would struggle to do that on the right

I would rather start Eisfeld on the right than Gnabry… Gnabry is just too selfish for me… Eisfeld is a very good player and deserves the playing time… also he has shown that he has an eye for a goal…

But i know Wenger wouldn’t do that… i think he will put Arteta in the middle with Flamini and Ozil, Rasmey and Wilshere will get free roaming roles…

Akpom & Eisfeld still need time, It will be up to Ramsey & Wilshere to help Gnabry.

Gnabry is struggling already and played for 120 minutes against westbrom. I dont think anybody can do much to help him. The best we can do for him is to start him from the bench.

Yes Gnabry should start as he played well against Stoke. He can be subbed later if he tires

Maybe play bendtner on the left up front .Surely his confidence is on a high after playing the other night so lets see how he goes.If he’s doing no good take him off at halftime , that’s what subs are for.

I think Miyaishi is better than Gnabry at the moment. He has more BPL experience and that showed in both Stoke and West Brom games. Gnabry is 18. He is not Messi either. No need to play him every 3 days no matter how thin our squad is. It will do him more harm than good.

He score 2 goals. Played good in second half against Stock, made big contibution for Eisfeld Goal (made interception and passed to Bentner). He also cutted defence with fine pass, but Bentner could not score?

      What is Miyaishi contribution?

My worry is only that Gnabry played 3 games within 1 week. He is still 18 3 games are too much for him as well.

    I think we will play:
    Szczesny
    Sagna Koscielny Vermaelen Gibbs
    Flamini Ramsey
    Gnabry Ozil Wilshere
    Giroud

    It makes more sense.
Only Vermaelen and Gnabry played on Wednesday, the other players were rested.

Gibbs and Sagna will really need to get forward to offer us that width and in the second half if we’re ahead bring on Monreal and Bellerin/Jenkinson for Ozil and Wilshere.

If he is fit, Gnabry is my choice and probably Arsene’s to start. If not, he will look at several possibilities including Ryo, Ramsey, and Bendtner. Though if Gnabry isn’t fit I wouldn’t be against trying Akpom on the right. And I expect midweek Rosicky may line up there if he is fit enough to play.

I think it will likely be Ramsey or Bendtner on the right this weekend though. He may keep Bendtner out after a long game, which was his first in a while. However, he will only get the rust off by playing. Ramsey is not great there, but we could do worse and it would put Arteta back in the midfield so we can try out him and Flamini together.

We do have some options there, but we are really missing Walcott and Ox right now.

Ryo just played 120 minutes so he will be subbed on, not start (if that)

Gnabry just played 120 minutes so he will be subbed on, not start (if that)

Rosicky is injured, he returns to training on monday, after the match.

Merte got 120 minutes but so did Vermealen so I can see Merte starting again, Kos will have to be on his game but I’m not terribly worried about that.

That leaves a couple of options:

Arteta plays DMF/CM (even with 96 minutes played) with Flamini and Wilshere/Ozil left Wilshere/Ozil Centre Ramsey right.
Akpom or Eisfeld plays on the right, Ramsey centre, Arteta sub (wouldn’t mind it, prefer Akpom to Eisfeld)
Monreal LW, Wilshere right, Ozil Centre. Arteta sub
Park or Bendtner right, Ramsey centre, Arteta sub
    Sagna RB, Jenkinson RW

to be honest, I have no idea what Wenger will do.

The boy need a rest. He should also be playing with the senior team to improve. I do not see him improving in league cup if most of the players are the ones they play with in the reserve.

Sorry i would prefer Chambo. For the midfield Ramsey, Flamini, Arteta, Wilshere, Ozil. This line-up is the one that we always use to defend our lead, it is not our way to play the game.
