Chelsea v Arsenal Player Ratings – Wilshere deserves the MOTM as no-one else does!

So another bore draw for Arsenal at Chelsea, but at least this one worked out to our advantage as we now have the second leg at home. There was little to show from our front men but the defenders were busy and did well to keep Chelsea out again. If only we could start scoring as well….

Ospina 7
He was the busiest keeper on the pitch as Chelsea had 20 shots and 6 were on target, so we have to give credit where it’s due. Good performannce from the Colombian

Chambers 7
His best game since he came back and he has put himself up for a more permanent place in the Gunners defence.

Mustafi 7
He could be a good candidate for the captain’s position if he plays like his every week. Top game.

Holding 6
Not as busy as his defensive partners but a much improved display from the youngster

Bellerin 6
Another one that put in a better, more solid performance. Not much to show offensively though…

Maitland-Niles 6
Earning his spurs and repaying Wenger’s confidence in the lad. Good all-round showing.

Wilshere 8
Great game before going off injured. Best of them all until then…

Xhaka 6
Nothing spectacular from the midfielder today but did his job without too many mishaps for a change

Iwobi 4
I am at a total loss as to why he started ahead of Alexis or even Walcott. He needs a break in my opinion, but I’m guessing Wenger wanted to make a point. Did get two shots but shouldn’t have bothered!

Welbeck 5
His early season form has not returned yet and I see no glimpses of it at all

Lacazette 5
One of his worst performances for Arsenal. Sanchez got involved twice as much in half the time…

Subs:

Elneny 6
He did his job but he couldn’t replicate Wilshere’s impact. Maybe with more game time he will improve

Sanchez 6
At least he tried, but I’m guessing Wenger thinks he is affected by the transfer speculation, but a bad Alexis is better than a good Iwobi!

  1. Agree, Wilshere was the only creative engine from the bunch. Ospina was excellent and the defenders did a very good job.

I hope they could be focused like that again when playing under more pressure, the upcoming Premier League away game. I think Wenger would still use 3-4-2-1 and Lacazette has to drop deeper if he does not get any supply from his teammates in the next match.

    1. One of our various problems is that Lacazette plays all his football in the penalty area … and under Wenger … the build up is sooo slow and intellectual that he does not get into the game. He is not much good in deeper areas … can hardly combine with this team mates. He is finding life very difficult in the EPL and may wish he had stayed nice and comfortable in France.

      1. Lacazette makes intelligent runs all match long, but as you rightly say the built up is too slow and without Ozil no one has the ability to find him.

  2. A draw is more than OK for me as we played at Stamford Bridge. As long as Walcott didnt play,it is more than okay for me. Its not that i dont like him,but I hate him! Because he is a trash, garbage!

    1. Unnecessary. Wenger should have put his foot down and told Walcott’s advisers that we were simply not prepared to pay him that much.

  3. Chambers or Ospina man of match for me, both excellent.
Bore draw? If our two chances had gone in you would have called it exciting. I thought it was a good game.

  4. For me its a tie between Wilshere and Ospina. Wilshere was the only creative player out there. Ospina made some important saves to keep us in the match innit.

  5. iwobi is second best last nite why rate him 4. you.just dont like him because he was poor in the 4-2 loss.Iwobi 7 to me .alexis waa poor a 5

  6. In other news UTD in for Sanchez there’s a reason UTD and city are in for him, he’s WC and we(wenger) let Him go

The club is in free fall and I cannot see where it will end when Liverpool and Everton are our spending us

  7. You seem to have a vendetta against iowbi who did really well against Chelsea and is a full Nigerian international at a young age. The reason Sanchez did not start was that Wenger decided a draw would suffice.Welbeck and iowbi are better than Sanchez defensively.in my view Holding was the best centre back on view last night. He deserves credit for recovering from the fiasco at Nottingham

    1. iwobi better in defense than sanchez? damn men, whatever u are smoking is very strong…sanchez defend even more than welbeck…in fact yesterday alexis fought a lot, seems like he was the only one caring about try to win the game and dont settle for the draw (what not sorprise me since wenger cant spread his mediocre mentallity in alexis, like other arsenal players…thats the real reason because he is leaving).

  8. Chambers all day long, though Wilshere ran him close. Ospina?, some good reflex saves but he looked punch drunk trying to claim a high ball after bumping shoulders with a player. I don’t expect perfect games that’s silly but some mistakes should not occur.

One thing I love about Wilshere is when we commit a blatant foul, Wilshere bolocks towards the ref direction as if we’ve been fouled. He’s the only one who does this with conviction, the top prem winning sides had players doing this to good effect.

  9. wilshere motm for me.Iwobi ,maitland holding were also good.If wilshere adds goals and assist to his game he would be a world beater…. of course if he stay FIT

  10. Iwobi shouldn’t have started considering his previous performance, he however did himself justice and played well, he isn’t the polished gem but he put in a good shift.

He did drift in and out of the game, wasn’t driving it forward all the time but he did a few times, he lacks an end product and that was on show.

    I would have given him a 6.
