There are worrying reports emanating from Germany that suggest Arsenal are close to missing out on the transfer of the talented young midfielder Lewis Holtby. The dynamic 22-year old played against the Gunners this season in the champions league for the German club Schalke, and was very impressive.
With his contract at Schalke due to end in the summer, Holtby has told the Bundesliga club that he is ready for a move to the Premier league. A number of clubs were interested in him, but it seemed as if Arsenal were leading the race. His first choices were Everton, who his English father supports, and Arsenal, because of our history, style of play and reputation.
Everton would struggle to match his wage demands, so we should have been clear favourites, but now it seems as if Holtby is on the verge of a pre-contract agreement with Tottenham that will see him move to White Hart Lane at the end of the season for nothing, according to Metro. If this is true, it is worrying for Arsenal fans.
Tottenham should not be beating us to our transfer targets, especially when they are available for nothing. Surely we could match the wage offer of Spurs. Has somebody decided he is not good enough, or have we simply been too slow to act? I really hope this rumour is not correct, because Holtby is a quality player who would fit in well at Arsenal.
