Could Damien Martinez be Arsenal’s Number One in the future?

Can Martinez become Arsenal’s Number 1 in the future? by AH

Damien Martinez is currently Arsenal’s 4th choice goalkeeper, with the Argentine behind polish internationals Lukas Fabianski and Wojiech Szczseny and Italian goalkeeper Vito Mannone. Arsenal doesn’t currently have a number one with the position going to either Vito Mannone or Wojiech Szczsney. There are some concerns over Szczsney’s fitness, with the Polish international only featuring twice for the gunners so far this season. While Mannone is inconsistent and has looked extremely shaky in recent weeks.

This has brought up the topic that Arsenal need to look at investing in an another goalkeeper, that has extreme quality and experience to his name, however we all know what the Arsenal board is like when it comes to spending money and no club will want to sell their number One keeper on the cheap. So if Arsenal are to find a new goalkeeper in the near future, I think it’s likely that Martinez will be the man to step up.

Martinez has featured twice for the Arsenal first team this season, as well as numerous appearances for Arsenal reserves. The two games that Martinez has played in for the Arsenal first team have both been in the capital one cup, conceding 6 goals in the process. Not the most impressive stat in the world, however with not much experience and honestly very poor defending in last night’s 7-5 game against reading, then you have to give Martinez the benefit of the doubt and hope for much improvement in the near future.

Martinez who spent the second half of last season on-loan at Oxford United, has made impressions of being a talented keeper, which lead to his quick up rise to the first team since joining the north London club from Argentina side Independente two years ago. He is notable for his fast reactions and reflexes, however he needs to improve on his handling and position. At 20 years old he still has time to improve with Szczseny not coming into the first team till two years ago and Mannone is now 24.

Don’t judge Martinez on the one game last night because he is certainly a talented keeper who I can see challenging Szczsney in the years to come.

Yes he can be a star, we conceded because of deffensive mistakes only one goal was because of him and for a 20 year old he showed composure and looks like he will make something for himself in the near future

Number 1??? Your joking right? All keepers we have are not good enough, seaman and Lehman are the only decent keepers we’ve had in the past 20 years

I don’t think he will from the performance on Tuesday night. age is no excuse. Iker Casillas become a top choice keeper at Real at an age younger than Martinez.

what good is judging a player after seeing him play once, be sensible.

He could be, you never know. Although not many people could take szczesny’s position – but football is a funny game, you cant predict 5 years down the line. Goalkeepers traditionally get better the older they get, so will just have to wait and see.

As a side note MANY people on this site were saying take out Mannone for Martinez, proving how fickle people can be…

I thought he made a few good saves even with our defense being awful…. even though he looks another accident prone one wenger managed to pluck from nowhere

@darryl,rubbish is a hard word to be used for a keeper that is still coming up. Many were like him or worse than him and today are gr8 keepers, just give him his chance.

He can’t be worst than Mannone, last game was one off incident,Arsenal won’t be conceeding 5 goals every match nor will Reading concede 7 every day.Let’s say it was an epic match,no need to criticize the young keeper, besides,he was to blame for only one of the five, and our own Mannnone was bad against Norwich,to some extent against Chelsea, even Shalke. We can’t judge him after that freak game, maybe after he has played at least 10 games for AFC,we can then come to some sort of idea as to how good a keeper he will be,or won’t.Who is that guy at the top labelling him rubbish,if he is Rubbish, then Mannone will be twice as rubbish,if we din’t have a strong defence in Mert,Verm,Jenk and Gibbs for most part of the season so far.

Some of the people criticising Martinez have lost their head, was it not Szszcezny that conceeded 8 against Manure in our most epic failure, that 8-2 humiliation we suffered last season–do we jugde Sczczesny on that performance?Goalkeepers are only last line of defence,if Hugo Lloriss, who I rate quite highly played for Norwich,he would concede just as many as their current goalkeeper, for their defence is shite.Lidergaard must be ridiculous, for he conceeded 5 yesterday, still I think he is better that Da Gea.I can’t believe these people watch football.

he is only young and is rather athletic… if he builds confidence and learns to read the game better he could be amazing i reckon… some of you are forget how late keepers actually bloom. It’s not like he let in a bunch of easy saves either.

he was at fault for one of the goals but did make some good saves, the pressure of wave after wave of attacks on our goal flustered him a little but he grew in confidence as we took hold of the game again. Hard to judge yet but better than Flaby

He’s rated very highly in Argentina for a reason and he has been saying he’s nervous befor these first team game becoz playing for arsenal no matter in wat competition it is is a very big deal for him u cnt judge some1 on 1 game I remember the first time I seen jack play he didn’t cover him self in Glory kept getting tackled and giving the ball away now look at him .. If every manager was like some of you negative fans we wouldn’t have hardly any footballer

if he is to become number 1 he has a long long way to go… to me apart frm roberts goal he could have done better to prevent the other 3. yes the defence was poor but he did not stand out or show potential. Szczseny has potential but isnt ready either. we should have bought hugo lloris when we had the chance

    This is not Fifa 2013

Players goalkeepers learn and improved by playing games after games…they became experienced by playing

mistakes are bound to have that part of learning

Its Martinez first top game against a Premireship club…he deserves some credit….

Well,He could replace Fabianski right now, WHAT A YOUNG KEEPER! Actually didnt play badly against reading, only the 3rd was his fault, i bet Casillas couldn`t have saved 1st goal, plus vs Coventry he was great, could do nothing about the goal coventry scored. I dont think he should replace Mannone or Szczesny but Fabianski isn`t good enough to keep him down
