Could Euro 2016 seal Vermaelen transfer back to Arsenal?

Whisper it Arsenal fans, but with the transfer of the central midfield star Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach already signed, sealed and delivered, and with Arsenal transfer rumours suggesting that Leicester City’s centre forward Jamie Vardy will soon be joining him, it is starting to look like the transfer policy of Arsene Wenger is actually somewhere close to matching the wishes of the Arsenal fans.

The general consensus seemed to be that it was the spine of the Arsenal side that was most in need of strengthening and so perhaps it will be a central defender that is next on the Frenchman’s wish list, assuming of course that Vardy is happy to move to north London and become a Gunner.

No doubt we all have our own opinion on which defender Wenger should sign, but I bet not many of you have thought of our old club captain Thomas Vermaelen have you? On the surface this might sound like a daft idea thought up by someone who has had too much sun after a few too many beers, but bear with me.

To be honest I never thought of it myself until the other day, when I was watching the frankly turgid friendly game between Belgium and Finland and I heard the commentator say that Vermaelen was set to be a first choice starter for his country at Euro 2016,. despite having hardly played any club football for Barcelona since he left Arsenal two years ago.

That has mainly been due to injury and fitness concerns though, but it does seem to have ruined his career at the Nou Camp. Having said that, there was a reason they signed him in the first place and if he could stay fit then the Verminator would be a great addition to any side.

So if he can get through Euro 2016 with Belgium and prove his fitness while showing some of the old form, how about Arsenal bringing him back to boost our defensive options? Watch this space Gooners.

  1. We don’t want him. Manolas (age26) Roma cb is a better option or even John Stones. Thomas is very prone to frequent injuries which won’t help our cause.

    1. John Stones is a terrible defender, every game I’ve watched with him playing he’s been the worst player he’s just over rated and over hyped just because he’s English and young!

  2. If there was any substance to this I would be worried. Whoever wrote this must have forgotten how pleased we were together the fee we did. Vermaelen had a complete meltdown at arsenal both physically and mentally, whilst had a great first season he never recovered after missing almost an entire season and that was really the end TV5 sad but true. Quite how he has made the Belgian squad. Baffles me and how he gets the nod ahead of alderwereld and vertomghen can only mean one of those playing full back.

Personally I would rather keep any of our 4 centre backs or hand a chance to hayden, bielik or pleguezuelo.

If I am being harsh then I have obviously not been paying attention to vermaelens restoration to form.

  3. vermelen not a chance.the guy is always crocked, i would rather stick with mertesacker than signing vermelen

  4. Noooooooo!!!!!!!!!! y would u want a beaten up Mitsubishi when a bugati is available…. pls, get koulibaly from Napoli and close dis case
