Should this be Petr Cech’s last season as Arsenal’s Number One keeper?

Petr Cech has certainly been a top goalkeeper for Chelsea in the past and he was still a quality Number One when he signed for Arsenal in the summer of 2015, but now he has reached the grand old age of 35 he doesn’t seem to be at the height of his powers any more. He will be one year older at the end of the season and he looks set to have the amazing record of never having saved a penalty for the Gunners.

Last weekends failure against Man City was his 13th for Arsenal, and amazingly the last penalty he saved in the Premier League was back in 2011. We all know now that when our opponents get a penalty it is always a certain goal and that is not a very good state of affairs. So is it time for Arsene Wenger to start looking for a new keeper?

Cech’s contract will be entering the final year this coming summer, so maybe he could still go on and play at a lower level for a few more years, but personally I doubt whether Arsenal fans would have much faith left in the Czech shotstopper, and I think they would likely prefer a younger more agile replacement for the next campaign. But who?

Our Colombian international David Ospina will be 30 this summer, and after his continuing wish to leave for first team football he is unlikely to sign a new contract which ends this summer, so whatever happens we will need a replacement. Which could of course be Matt Macey, who has been impressive in his League Cup and Europa League appearances this year. He is now 23 and at 6ft 6in he is even taller than Cech, and a good half foot bigger than Ospina. Maybe Wenger will ease him in next season?

But there has been one rumour that Wenger is keen on the Real Madrid keeper Keylor Navas, who is a Costa Rican international and is supposedly looking to revitalise his career after nearly being used as part of the deal that was supposed to take David De Gea to Manchester United last summer, but he is also going to be 31 in December, but could still have a good five years in front of him.

Do you think that Wenger should look to promote Macey or bring in a new replacement for Cech?

  1. Definitely, why d’you think Chelsea let him go, Sorry to say it but Petr Cech was finished years ago, another bloomer by Wenger

    1. Sad thing about it is Wenger doesn’t a good keeper when he see’s one, It’s no coincidence that both Almunia and Fabianski became better keepers when they left Arsenal, I mean how does he let two decent keepers in Szcesny and Martinez leave and keeps an ageing Cech and average Ospina

      1. Another big shocker from a deluded Arsenal fan. This is what I hear when players arent performing AW gets slated and blamed for tolerating for too long –that such players should be offloaded. We have never regretted letting go of so many players (Jevihio, RVP, Bentner, Ashavin, Vamalen, etc)….but just because one or two managed to pick up the challenge (which is normal) then AW hasnt done well. Did Sanchez not leave a certain Barcelona and become even better under AW? What about Kos, Monreal, etc. What about the one he got for free (Kolasinac) and is already arguably the signing of the season. We need guys who are a bit more realistic. Guys…..feel free to go support Spurs. This is ridiculous!

    2. Signing cech was a big mistake as we couldn’t grow him and sell him to a top client. We will be looking at capitalising on the new goalkeeper market, as we finally see that goalkeepers are able to command big fees. We will be targeting young goalkeepers. We will do this via two strategies.
      1) Sign a young goalkeeper and grow him with the idea of selling him to a mediocre client for a nominal fee, netting us a few millions.

      2) Sign a youngster with significant potential. Groom him and sell him to a top client. We see that in the next 5 years our mediocre clients will be able to outspend us which means we can generate significant returns with our unique strategy.

      1. Remember Resource, You are plainly an intelligent man and have writing skills. So why not drop this unfunny Stan Kroenke personna and write from a real fan point of view. We are all well aware that the clubs hierarchy look at everything from a financial viewpoint first and foremost and you are not telling us anything new. Personally I am far more interested in the genuine views of our fans, of which you are clearly one. So all this silly “clients” nonsense leaves me, and I suggest most others, cold . It is unfunny and a waste of a good writing brain, if I may say so. Why not come clean and be yourself? I am sure your real self has something worthwhile to say .

  2. Agree with Rolfe. The special one wouldn’t have sold him if he were still
good enough.I read he hasn’t saved apenalty for the last 2 seasons.
Some of the golas concede could have been saved.
This shows he is declining with age.

    1. That’s not right. Chelski had both Courtois and Czech. Given Czech’s s long and excellent service it was Abramovich who ruled that he should be allowed to leave. This despite Mourinho not wanting him to go to a rival club. Still at age 35 we would need to hire a very good keeper to replace him.

    2. The truth, which was widely documented at the time , is that Mourinho did NOT want Cech to leave at all but was overruled by Abramovitch.

  3. Yes there’s are quality keepers coming up across the continent eg Leno, rulli,Rico
    Or closer to home butland

    1. Do we have money to spend on keepers??? No… And take a note here that next season almost our half of the team will be out of contract… Ramsey, Wilshere, Sanchez, Ozil… We need to replace him… I know Wilshere is not playing 1st right now but he will this season at some point of time.. We would require above 100 Millions if we seriously want replace Sanchez and Ozil…. Then we need offer better contract to Ramsey as well and probably Wilshere if Wenger decides… All this will huge amounts of funds hence apart from this Arsenal won’t be able to buy anyone…. And important thing is that we need to disciplined and focused in our out field play when we don’t ball…. If we are not strong enough in out field then no keeper can keep Clean sheets of we deploy keeper like David De Gea…. He is the best Goal Keeper in Premier League right now…. 1st we need to organize our play defensively… And then only we can blame Goal Keeper….. But being Arsenal we don’t have money like Chelsea and Man City…

  4. hi gooners, off topic during the international break why dont the players who dont get called up for their national teams get the week off to recuperate as from next month other leagues have the winter break to rest and england doesn’t??just asking..

  5. That is the difference between today’s modern managers/coaches and wenger. They leave if they see aged player until he is extraordinary. Cech lost his place to courtios because he was doing mistakes. When you are a top club your team must at least have one quality Goalie. I dont know how he ignores that. I think we must really replace Cech, Giroud, Ozil, Sanchez, debuchy,Walcott and Per.

Bringing in Griezmann, Draxler, Navas, Golovin/Danilo(Porto) and Goretzka. May be a quality CB as well.

Most important Wenger should move and bring in Jardim or Zidane with Henry as assistant coach. We require fresh management who can change our player’s mentality. Jardim/Zidane can bring us fresh atmosphere and bring in quality players.

      1. Why not? if you have coach as Jardim or ambitious coach? The problem is we forgot to dream because of Wenger’s reign…

  6. How I wish we could raid Athletico Madrid…

    – Oblak
    – Grienzman
    – Simeone

    If only wishes came true.

  7. Maureen knew he was past it when he sold him to us. He’s 35!!!! He ain’t no spring chicken. Even that Navas is 31. Jesus I want a young GK that can save a penalty

  8. I like Cech and think he is still a good keeper, however, he is long past his prime and personally, I think Ospina is underrated and should get much more playing time. Ospina is the better shot blocker and can learn leadership qualities.

It will cost more money than should spend to buy a better keeper than Ospina. We should save our money for replacements of Santi, Ozil, Sanchez, Per, Gabriel etc.

  9. This is what I hear when players aren’t performing AW gets slated and blamed for tolerating for too long –that such players should be offloaded. We have never regretted letting go of so many players (Jevihio, RVP, Bentner, Ashavin, Vamalen, etc)….but just because one or two managed to pick up the challenge (which is normal) then AW hasnt done well. 1. The coach has to prepare his team tactically and psychologically which im afraid Wenger can no longer do it. The coach has to bench non performers, which he doesn’t. The coach has to play to the players strengths, Wenger plays them out of position or benches them.
