Could Xhaka’s arrival spell the end for Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere

Granit Xhaka is the latest name to join the ever-growing list of top midfielders at Arsenal, but could his arrival prove disastrous for Jack Wilshere

The Swiss midfielder has agreed to join the Gunners from Borussia Monchengladbach this summer in a reported £30 Million move, and many Arsenal fans will have watched the Switzerland versus Albania match yesterday to see their new arrival in action.

Xhaka was given a Man of the Match award for his outing in France yesterday, and will have excited the Gunners who had known little about their new signing.

One former Arsenal player has now moved to praise his capture for the North-Londoners, and described him as ‘top class’.

Djourou said: ‘I think he won’t have a problem. He is a top class player with lots of qualities. I think he’ll do Arsenal a lot of good.

‘It’s a team with a lot of talent and a lot of class.

‘There’s people like [Francis] Coquelin and [Santi] Cazorla, – there’s huge competition – but I’m sure that he has the quality to impose himself.

‘He brings calmness, his ability to play long passes, precision and aggression.’

I’m sure we cant wait to finally see our player grace his presence in our famous red, and settle himself in midfield.

Looking at his style of play he strikes me as a better version of Jack Wilshere, who is great at picking a forward pass, and is best set at the base of the midfield. We all love Jack, but Xhaka’s arrival is now making me think that he could ultimately be at risk of losing his place in the squad.

The England international has struggled with one too many injuries in recent years, and expecting him to have a long fruitful career after having so many fitness issues remains highly unlikely.

Jack is an Arsenal fan, he would most likely sign if we offered him a contract until his retirement, but does his future now hang in the balance?

    1. Biased or not…ramsey is still very much ahead of jack….maybe he should get a run of game 1st and we can start comparing him with ramsey…as for now; he contributes nothing to arsenal, maybe british quota but dan crowley can also do that

  1. Looks like this article writer is a Ramsey fan as well,

Talent wise wilshere is miles better theRamsey anyone with a football brain can see that, let’s all hope it’s the end of Ramsey because he is the biggest weak link in the squad never mind first x11.

Get rid of Ramsey gibbs Walcott debuchy szeny
and we might just have a chance if he replaces with some quality.

Kante mahrez etc just to name a few

    1. yeah that guy who plays one game a season and takes 100k a week is way more useful than Ramsey.

  2. Looking forward to the competition in the midfield next season. Let’s see how Arsene will make use of the players…. Wilshere will be part of the team next season. He wouldn’t be an automatic starter but remember injuries and Arsenal. Even the Wilshere haven’t been fit for a long time in 3seasons now…

Xhaka played very well yesterday. He will only improve at Arsenal…

Ozil is world class. That pinpoint cross to Bastian is simply sublime…

  3. I think Xhaka was fantastic yesterday
He looks like a real leader, hard working, interceptions, attacking and defending

Jack is always injured so, I don’t see him as a concern in a sense

I would rank our back CMs in this way
    1. Cazorla
    2. Xhaka
    3. Coquelin
    4. Jack
    5. Aaron
    6. Chambers

  4. Jack should stay and fight for his place, that’s if he ever stays fit.

Assuming he stays fit and improved then I see a ready made Santi replacement in a year.

  5. they don’t even play in the same position..Xhaka is a DM while Wilshere is a CM / CAM.
plus Wilshere is the heir to Cazorla who would be 32-years-old in December.

    1. @wilshegz
Jack is in no way “heir” to Santi…That is a serious downgrade, fit or not…Jack’s got a good football brain, and thats it…

      1. how is Wilshere replacing Cazorla gradually as he ages a downgrade??.
..injuries have hampered his development else no one will ever doubt Wilshere abilities.
don’t forget Wilshere in 2010/11 season.
        pogba who?
        verratti who?
        kroos who?

  6. I would believe xhaka would have a better partnership with a coquelin, than all the midfielders we have available, i think that partnership could become a very steely partnership, i am actually saying this base on what have been seen in the matches he have played for his country recently.
For me personally i think Wilshere is more suited playing closer to the attacker(forward) rather than closer to the defense line, for me he is more a liability than an asset in the Defensive third.
Then again the the selection of our midfield is left to our manager, who shows a biases to specific players , which leaves the team unbalance and not properly covered in various areas of the field.
What i can say though is that we have a glut of midfielders available for any sort of game

    1. I agree with ruelando, Jack still has a good future here. He Should play in more advance Role. I think Wenger will use him at no 10 in cup games or in some games as a substitute to Rest Ozil.
Wenegr may also play Cazorla as a backup of Ozil. In That case Wilsahre will be deployed at the base with a defensive midfielder.
He can be used a Winger also if no other winger like Mahrez or makhaterian is signed.

Cazoral is getting Older and hence we have to keep hold of Jack. Yes he is injury prone and that is a concern.
