Did Bendtner do enough to redeem himself with Arsenal Fans?

Bendtner leads Arsenal youth to victory by Twig

Nicklas Bendtner’s pass to Eisfeld was delightful; almost Cesc-like. Had the pass come from Arsenal new signing, Mesut Ozil, I’m sure we would all have been glowing about the assist all day long – even if he didn’t do much else after that. But since it was Nicklas Bendtner, the reception has been a little bit muted.

Yesterday, it was a very difficult night for us. We had youngsters like Miyaichi, Akpom, Gnabry, Bellerin, Hayden and Eisfeld battling it out with West Brom’s more experienced campaigners and coming out not too badly. When Arteta was forced off through injury, Nicklas Bendtner provided one of the few experienced heads and leaders we had on the pitch: this was showcased by him making the difficult decision to take the first penalty kick, which paved the way for the youngsters to follow. It was a risky move, which if it had gone wrong, would have had him slaughtered by the Arsenal Fans and would have damaged his confidence almost irredeemably. But Nicklas Bendtner, seemingly oblivious of the danger he was putting himself in, and still chewing his gum, stepped up and coolly dispatched his kick.

His all round play was impressive as well. Although he was a bit rusty and lacking in sharpness, his passing and hold-up play was top notch. WhoScored gave him a rating of 7.6, which was the highest of any Arsenal player on the pitch. For a big guy, his playmaking qualities, which I’ve commented on before, are impressive and he distributed the ball well. I felt he played more like a Number 10, or 9 and a half as Rooney would say, than an out and out striker. He reminded me a bit of Michu with his display yesterday; his best position might actually be behind a main striker, where he could set him up with carefully weighted passes.

He wasn’t perfect though – far from it – as he missed a one-on-one with the keeper after waiting too long. But this happens to the best of them as well, especially if the pressure to score is too much, which was certainly the case for Nicklas Bendtner – remember Robben vs Casillas in the 2010 World Cup finals? But overall, with his assist and first penalty kick, Nicklas Bendtner was the most decisive player for Arsenal on the night.

Notable Mentions
————————
Although this article is about Nicklas Bendtner, Hector Bellerin and Chuba Akpom gave very intriguing performances.
Both players played out of position. Bellerin is a right fullback who played as a central midfielder and Akpom is a striker who played as a right winger. On the strength of yesterday’s showing, at least, Akpom should be preferred over Gnabry and Miyaichi for the right wing place. He took on players, was quick, and showed incredible maturity to dispatch his penalty. Bellerin gave us drive in the midfield and was one of the reasons why we were not overrun in extra time. I would like to see a more detailed article on the performances of these two players soon.

hahahaha, i was thinking of commenting when it happened (it was during our match) but then I thought why bother, he isn’t with arsenal anymore and he was pretty much a failure here even though he played great for Ivory Coast and seems he will do well at Roma, good for him.

The fickle nature of so many is remarkable. Bendter is a useless pie-eating nobbend, who should never again wear an arsenal shirt. Much better to let akpom get some first team experience than pick a geezer who has been at the club for nine years and never achieved anything. He’s so shit that people are making a big deal if the fact he manafed to score a ppenalty….

This is the best chance of silverware we have had in years and we are walking a thin line, NOT the time to ‘let players get experience.’

Right now we need help, the guys are holding it together through this injury crisis and need help from any quarter.

In the words of Mick Jagger; ‘you can’t always get what you want but if you try sometimes, you just might find
You get what you need baby…’

    Bendtner said after the game

“Very emotional return, but what better way than a win! Fans was absolutely incredible throughout the game and help us in difficult periods. For myself I was very moved by my reception and hearing my song again made my heart skip!

Lets get behind all of our players and stop the negative comments.

I here Benzema might want to move to Arsenal especially when the Madrid fans haven’t got behind him and he’s hearing how well Ozil has been received.

I am great thanks and you? I will be even better when Chelsea, Tottenham, Man City and Villa all draw and we win. :-)

Always thought Benzema was overrated. And too similar of a player to Giroud. If we got another striker I’d want it to be somebody more mobile, and who plays deeper. I would still love to see Arsenal go for Jackson Martinez. Even if we get him in January and he’s cup tied in CL, he can still tremendously help us in the league. For now, keep the goals coming Giroud!

you don’t pardon someone for being such a nob for two years after one match. I

t was a great starting performance but I need to hear more praise from Wenger and his teammates about his attitude change and more time on the pitch showing us what he can offer.

as long as nb23 put the same amount of work rate as yesterday keeps his mouth shut and train hards then yes as us gooners will always support a player wearing AFC colours with pride and commitment

Bendtner can build on that & give Giroud some strong competition. That can only be good for Arsenal, especially when you look at the congestive run of fixtures coming down the road. Unless I find out he fvcked my wife, I see no reason to re-engage my dislike for him when he can deliver the goods. Call me fickle, but that’s what we buy players for, right? While his hair may look like he spent one too many days on Discovery Channel’s Naked & Afraid, I like the what I see so far in his play. Hopefully, he can provide a good answer to our short-term striker crisis.

Considering where He’s coming from he did okay in my Opinion. Getting an assist and scoring his penalty superbly, I already know what he can do when he’s fully match fit, besides he’s still only 25 and there is lots of room for improvement.

Wenger will buy a world class striker in January and a world class defender next summer.

Profesional footballers are a strange breed. Most of them need to be loved and then you will get the best out of them.

It was his debut (kind of) and with the amount of media on his back, I think he handled himself well. He also set up our only goal and took a good penalty for us! He can only improve really, let’s get behind him! He’s an Arsenal player!

No. some of his comments about Arsenal, just because he didn’t succeed here, are going to require more than one assist and a penalty for complete forgiveness. If he keeps his work ethic up and tries to put more in I will begin to forget. Still think we need another ST

At this point it’s not about Arsenal fans welcoming him back or forgiving him, it’s about how he handles himself. If he can go the rest of the season and put his heart into Arsenal and show the skill he has instead of showing his ego then I think Arsenal fans will embrace him. If anything though he needs to seize the chance he’s been given to attract a suitor and justify the kind of money He wants to make

I still reserve judgemnet. But after his long talk with Wenger, maybe now Nicklas won’t be worrying about his pink boots, his large salary, and telling people how good he is and actually concentrate on his job, which is to play football, and more importantly play your heart out when you wear our shirt.

i still think he’s out the door as soon as possible. We only kept him cause we couldn’t get Ba. Once we get another striker, he’s out, unless he becomes the next Henry this season, lol.

Bendtner was still much lacking in pace and ball controlling. Also poor understanding with the squad but majority around him were youngsters. However we need to remember that he don’t play any pre-season matches and was slightly overweight before. After all, his overall performance was a decent one. He has an good assist and lets hope Bendtner will be a better player sooner rather than later and repay the fans support on him by helping Arsenal this season.

    – If he keeps his mentality like that and offer more on the pitch i can’t see why not, but just from one game, i do not believe he redeemed himself, he made himself look very unprofessional, all he needs to do is lower his ego and stay professional and train hard i can see him becoming a useful player, just a shame he wasted a few years of his career due to his ego, he had good potential

People still angry with Bendtner are just damn, we have only got one striker, he can’t play for the whole season without help, I know Mr Bendtner is a bellend but we should get behind him as this will only enhance our squad, its a win win situation..

Yes. 120 mins is itself a great achievement. An assist. A penalty. With Walcott and Podolski injured Bendtner is an immediate back up for Giroud. Playing with Ozil, Wilshire, Cazorla and co Bendtner could well become a serious competitor as starter. How did Bendtner’s wilderness years come about? But then we could ask the same about many others like Arshavin, Girvinho, Santos, Denilson, Djourou, etc. Fortunately Arsenal have turned things around and Bendtner like the club is back on track.
