Emery says Koscielny will still be Arsenal captain – but what about on the pitch?

Arsene Wenger regularly had non-playing Arsenal captains like Per Mertesacker last year, but our captain on the field was Laurent Koscielny who was more a silent leader by example rather than a vocal encourager of his team-mates.

But now that Koscielny is set to become yet another off-field club captain, Unai Emery has to choose which of our current or new squad members will actually lead on the pitch. Emery told Arsenal.com: “My idea is to know every player and to know, also, the personality of the players. And then, I think my first idea is to have five captains in the team. But at the moment, I don’t know the names.

“I need to know more and also, firstly, Koscielny is the first captain now and for me, I have respect for that.

“Then, we are looking at, looking for, who are the players whose personality is the best in the dressing room. We want to keep the respect for these players and to find the captain and choose very well the best player for that.”

Well Emery has brought in strong fighters like Sokratis and Lichsteiner but Torreira is far from ready to be a captain until his English is up to scratch. Xhaka was Litchsteiner’s deputy at the World Cup, and Ramsey is considered by many as captain material because of his long service to the club.

Well we have our first game tomorrow, let’s see if anyone stands out ahead of our games in Singapore, but who do you think should be the on-pitch captain?

  1. I actually think Chambers could make good captain material, he is a player who communicates to players around him and when he is partnered with another ‘young’ CB then he tends to be the leader.

While he isn’t ready to take the armband, I do feel it is something to consider, we could push for him to be one of the five captains that Emery talked about.

    1. Maybe Chambers can be the future captain, once he performs well more consistently, becomes a regular starter and playing for England

Currently Ramsey is more suited to be the captain, because he is a regular member of Wales national football team, an Arsenal first team player and can inspire the other outfield players with his high work rate

  2. Thought it was already confirmed that Ramsey would be give captain, mega pay raise and the team built around him for his great qualities

    1. which great quality are you talking about? Ramsey is still one of the reason arsenal are not in top four I pray he doesn’t sign so that he will be sold.

      1. Creative flicks, tireless runs, always presses the opponent hard, good work ethic, high stamina, decent passing and good finishing ability

        1. Ramsey is average at best.Even Joe Allen is better than him.I’d prefer ww deploy Miki as number 8 and I’m sure he’ll be better than Ramsey

        2. Those rose tinted spectacles of yours are working well. And as for the idea that Ramsey could inspire others – laughable!

    2. for real? ramseey scored 8 goals and assisted 7 in just 21 epl starts last season..from Central midfield. I wonder what u will call these stats

      1. We will never win th eleague with Ramsey controlling that midfield .why is no one talking about AMN for that position is beyond me ,that kid Ozes class ,him partnered with the new guy that would be my midfield ,but what do I know .

  3. I can remember several occasions where he lost ball possession and we ended up conceding goals as a result

    1. BernadhoM, that’s an interesting statement ‘I can remember SEVERAL where he lost ball possession and we ended up conceding goals as a result’.
Any chance you could give SEVERAL examples?
So would you swap Joe Allen for Aaron Ramsey?

      1. I can remember in two occasions against man city where where had equalized and he lost ball possession to Aguero who scored the winner. If I’m not wrong it’s 2016-2017 season.I will choose Allen anytime. He has a good vision and composure with the ball.

        1. I have heard Ramsey serves wonderful toast and marmalade and makes a smashing coffee! Trouble is , you have to be married to him! Personally, I would want the toaster, a huge yacht in the Med and a mansion in Mayfair at the very least for his transfer. But no one divides opinion like he does. I am a reluctant Remainer, where he is concerned, at least until we bring in better, which as yet, we have not. He is a huge step up in quality from the likes of Xhaka, Elneny, Iwobi etc. Please note I said “reluctant.”

          1. I agree with you Jon – he is far better than those three who I think are not up to this level. So unless Emery can work a little bit of magic I hope I don’t see any of them, even on the bench.

            1. Jack, were it up to me, none of us would see them anywhere near Arsenal FC! I fail to see why some still think Xhaka will come through under Emery. He is far too slow in action and worse still in thought. He has only one pace; Merts style! Iwobi is well, just Iwobi, nuff said! Elneny is a player we should never EVER have considered even at the low £5 mill he cost. I would not have taken him even on a free. He is just a fill in and that ‘s being very kind to him.

      2. Honestly, Ken1945, The only one thing I’d talk about Ramsey is the engine part alone. sometimes this lad loses possession in critical areas when we need goals.. or it’s either he’s doing unnecessary ball tricks we actually don’t wanna see at that particular moment, the idea is hit one to Mkhi, One to Ozil To PEA to LACA and that’s a goal. I remember a game against westbrom, score 1-1 we needed a goal but Ramsey does his usual 360°s and slips he recovers the ball yes but no end product to deliver… Why…?? because he killed the timing of the players inside the box.
He can be a great player but sometimes he just snaps and this cycle is something needs to end if he’ll become Captain and sign a Mega Deal. That dressing room is hot with Ozil Taking The 10, A worldcup Winner, Multiple winner of German best player. even though he didn’t hit the grade at the worldcup, he’s still a top top player, PEA,LACA,Xhaka,Mkhi,Papa,Lich,Cech,Leno. Plenty Good stuff without excluding magic boy “gara Chua” Being Captain In that dressing room needs Fire Up Captain who will straighten them On the pitch leading on the front line with consistent performance…. Emery has to choose wisely. We hold our chins and relax. But Ramsey has qualities but it’s time to transfer that to the Pitch On Consistent basis Like our former no 8 Freddie LungBerg. The number 8 jersey has lost grade lately, those numbers were shining, we need to see that more. Laca9 PEA14 Ozil10, Mkhi7,Torreira11,Papa5,Ramsey8. That’s a good crop of players.

  4. ozes you’re d real gunners fan have Eva seen,Ramsey is d problem of arsenal they should sell him out

  5. Tony Adams was captain material. Patrick Vieira was captain material. No need to explain why; born leaders who lead by example.

Ramsey as captain? People say work rate, 10 years at the club, high stamina, he presses, and so on.

Ask yourself, does that inspire you? Seeing him run around abandoning his midfield partner, recklessly bombing forward to score?

    Adams, Vieira, real captains. Period.

    1. The idea that you can tell from the stands and tv who are captain material is nonsense. The games are small part of the time at the club anyway and you hear/see none of the conversations unless they are heated during a game. Training, dressing room etc. take up far more time overall and is where these guys are judged seeing as communication is much more regular then. Everyone hated Arteta being captain but he was know as “coach” by his teammates and look at him now no.2 at City clearly he had what it takes. Funnily enough we’ve struggled pretty bad since the “coach” left us actually.

      1. I saw Sanchez having a go at Ramsey at least twice during matches. No love lost there. In fact I don’t think Ramsey has got that much respect from the rest of the team so the idea of him being captain and trying to tell others what they should be doing is just laughable.

      2. Angus you wrote:
“Everyone hated Arteta being captain but he was know as “coach” by his teammates”
You know this from being at the train ground everyday with the players? Or did you get this from “reports” If so what reports?

If it is just your opinion, then we agree with you. It is your opinion. However if you are claiming what you have said is facts, then how do you know these facts

    2. Spot on about captains. We have NO obvious captains at the club, thanks to a certain Frenchman who is mercifully now gone. In todays snowflake generation world, REAL captains are as rare as hens teeth. When such as WALCOTT ACTUALLY WORE THE ARMBAND ON A FEW LAUGHABLE OCCASIONS, YOU HAVE TO THINK THAT CAPTAINS ARE POINTLESS. They are NOT pointless though; just virtually extinct. Modern players are almost all not tough enough in mind, in will to win and have not the necessary leadership capacity. Not just at Arsenal but generally.

  6. According to kev Ramsey has signed a new contract and been made club captain so that must be true then!!!!???

  7. When emery was asked if he will continue with wenger’s tactics and philosophy this was what he said..
“I want to win. The performances, every day, for work on attacking, defending, is to be competitive each match.

“My first idea is getting better day-to-day with our players and working hard with our players, to transmit my ideas.

“The system for me isn’t the most important.

“For me, the most important thing is to be and to create one competitive team. And then, we have the quality.”
You see what he said..I WANT TO WIN!!!… please take note of that.. He is a winner,he would do everything to win if it means dropping sexy football and going for a pragmatic football.. Emery is willing to do that… That’s a winner… Wenger lost the winning mentality long time ago..he wasn’t ruthless and he paid for it but still respect to wenger for everything he did in his first few years
Emery words have endeared him to my heart.. He is just the coach we need after so much suffering with wenger…he would make us successful again…he would take us back to the top

    1. ramsey will score a lot of goals this season he’l be very much aware of his all round responsibility towards the new manager and towards this team – like or loath him we’d do well to at least give him a chance under emery – we need to get behind them all really.

  8. when u are faced with challenge of choosing a captain, the best choice is still Ramsey. look at the changes made by emery, it clearly showed that kochielny, cech, xhaka will not be regular starter, so the choice of captain is clear. Ramsey bursting forward is not an issue anymore if the defensive mid fielders and defenders are good. watch out for socratis-mavropanous or chamber’s pairings.

  9. Ramsey can’t be captain because he doesn’t communicate with his fellow players viera was a good leader and a good communicator wilshere is even a leader and a good communicator I wish he stayed and Ramsey left..I would prefer people that has handled the armband before like Xhaka, sokratis, litchenstiner including Monreal and lacazette but the main captain remain koscielny we need people that can communicate on and off the pitch…if Ramsey doesn’t want to sign sell him and buy nzonzi or banega

  10. Since Wenger happened to Adelaide…I still silently pray that jeff would find his feet and blistering trickery again…dont be suprised if he isnt sold

    1. Why is Reine – Adelaide even mentioned on here by several fans? He is merely a real fringe player who lacks toughness of mind and body. He will not be of any relevence to Arsenal’s first team. Best to get him off the wage bill, permanently.

            1. Blessed are the peacemakers eh? It s ok though. No problem between us; just differing opinions. It is allowed, you know.

  11. Emery mention five captains and Kos still the captain, what i felt he meant is that we need leaders in all areas of the pitch, over the years we needed someone or two on the field of play to tell the other players to pull up their socks and work. Captains do not have to say a word but just by their mere action, they get the best out of individuals besides them.

I do not see Ramsay with that ability to motivate others to lift their game and like what a fan here wrote Captains are a dying breed, because Captains put the team before self and this generation of footballers it is self before team. It is a difficult choice, my four choices for captain actual comes from the defence line Monreal, Chambers, Mustafi and last but not least Liechstiener

  12. We need real leaders all over the pitch. The only need for a “captain” is for the toss up and we have a lot of tossers to choose from for that little job!

  13. Kos should not be captain, i’m fed up with these off pitch captains that have no or very little input. As for Ramsey, apart from his long service to the club he is not captain material. In fact i don’t believe Arsenal have a captain among our players from last season so i believe Lichtsteiner will be captain.

  14. So much Ramsey hate, give the man a chance.
I’m not saying he’ll be the best captain in the history of Arsenal but I think he’s our best option at the moment.

I’m always happy to see him on the team sheet. Great player imo. With a balanced midfield, players who know their roles and stick to them with discipline I’m sure he’ll get loads of goals and work his socks off.

    1. Abbas and you stated the problem with Ramsey.
“A balanced midfield, players who know their roles and stick to them with discipline…”

That is exactly what Ramsey doesn’t do.

His bombing forward unbalances the midfield, he ignores his role and plays like a 10. Is it any wonder whomever we pair with Ramsey is garbage midfielder?
