Even Hill-Wood thinks it’s time for Wenger to leave Arsenal

It is a sad state of affairs when even Peter Hill-Wood, the former Arsenal chairman who appointed Arsène Wenger as manager all those years ago, thinks the Frenchman has outstayed his welcome and is destroying his reputation by hanging on too long at the club.

“I clearly am not very happy about what is going on,” Hill-Wood was reported as saying. “I think that there probably ought to be a change of management.

“He has done fabulously well, it is just he has overstayed his welcome. I find it very sad because he was the great love of many and then it [overstaying his welcome] has destroyed it all.”

Hill-Wood, who stood down as club chairman in 2013 has until now been one of Wenger’s supporters has always had the respect of the Arsenal Board and his opinion will carry a lot of weight with the current members. He has had a long-standing friendship with the current Chairman Chips Keswick so it is very likely they still get together to discuss the goings-on at the club, and his words will certainly upset our long-suffering manager.

Could this announcement by Hill-Wood signal yet another nail in Arsene’s coffin?

  1. Could it be the last nail, you oddly ask! No, actually because the last nail was a while ago in my opinion. It is totally clear that the club are going to soon sack Wenger. The only question is , precisely when. I think it most likely he will limp on til shortly after the last Prem game. Second most likely date is straight after we lose to ACMilan on aggregate, ie probably on March 16th. Third most likely is if we lose badly or embarrass the club again tomorrow at Brighton and he is sacked this Monday. PLEASE GOD! But, as you have not the wit realise his sacking is a certainty, not a possibility, I have to SPELL OUT THE MOST LIKELY SCENARIOS. NOT IF BUT WHEN!

    1. @jon fox – you’ve said “…his sacking is a certainty etc etc. However, you are wrong as that is not the only option available to him. it’s not beyond common sense and practical solution that he may resign either by his own volition or be encouraged to do so. the point (i’m making) is you missed an option (ie resignation). apart from addressing your opinion on whether sacking is a possibility or its a certainty – i agree he will (soon) be gone.

  2. Thanks for the good and bad memories Arsene.
It would have been so good if the board announce his departure now instead of waiting till the summer.

  3. I think his friend David Dein should take him on one side and tell him it’s over and to go gracefully. Doesn’t he realise the ongoing damage he is doing to the team by being so stubborn? Does he not know or care that we are 30 points off the top with 10 matches to go? He should not take full responsibility for the pathetic performances of late, but then you can’t sack a whole team of mediocre, pampered millionaires.

Please Arsene it’s over you will never win anything with this team, they don’t care, they are in a boat with one oar, they are losers without any leadership.

    1. I meant the damage he is doing to the CLUB not the team. This current team are already damaged goods apart from three or four players.

  4. All depends on results.
    9/10 of Arsenals remaining
    league games are easy so
with the international break and catch up games
it will be late April at the earliest before
top 4 from the league is no longer possible.
The Europa league is knock out so Arsenals top 4 hopes
from the Europa could be extinguished as early as the 16th of this month.
But the Europa looks like Arsenal’s best bet for top 4.
Will Mr Wenger resign? If he is sacked he actually gets a bigger pay out.
A dignified choreographed retirement is most likely.
If Arsene wins the Europa should he retire on top
or risk it all in one last hurrah?
    So exciting.
Just imagine it the parade around Islington thousands of AKB’s singing
“We want you to stay we want you to stay…… 🙂

    1. … Will Mr Wenger resign? i think he will be encouraged to make this announcement because there doesn’t seem to be anybody at the club with the guts to tell him to p*** off.

  5. I just hope he’s fired sooner rather than later, let’s forget the royal send off people think he deserves he deserves to leave arsenal FC he’s become a very very wealthy man at this club that’s reward enough, might I add paid too handsomely in my opinion.. for all the embarrassments we’ve had to endure under his leadership we’re the ones who paid for that so Mr Wenger has had the better end of the deal, he deserves nothing more from this club! For all his failures the club stuck by him and increased his wages in the process! He has often talked about transfer fees and wages that have got out of control but he was quite happy to squeeze million’s out of the club for continuously underperforming and then selfishly outstaying his welcome by many many years, even now he still hasn’t taken the hint that’s he’s not wanted and is not good enough to be manager of this football club.. the man has made a fool out of himself and I for one will be glad to see the back of him!

  6. It has been reported that Lord Harris of Peckham offered his resignation to the Arsenal board, but it was rejected. The reason was the position of Arsene Wenger as manager.

  7. I have wanted him out for ten years. If it wasn’t for the three recent FA Cups I’d call this the lost decade. It’s the enablers that are as much to blame, those on the board and the poison that is Kronke, and also those fans that many years ago marched in favour of him staying when he could have gone to manage Real or Barca. How long would he have lasted at those clubs? Those clubs don’t accept failure. We do. No big club keeps a manager who can’t win the league for fourteen years but we’ve lost our ambition and self-respect to kowtow to the wants of one man. Arsenal has become a stagnant millpond of mediocrity

  8. Wow, now everyone is seeing it, wenger is the main problem but akbs will tell u otherwise shame on them, I hope akbs go along with wenger when he leaves

    1. That is a typical comment written purely for the opportunity of winding up other Arsenal fans. What is the point except to annoy people?
