Forget Wenger – Arsenal simply need to win an away game

There may be absolutely nothing riding on Arsenal’s game at Huddersfield this afternoon, except for the fact that Arsene Wenger would hate to be leaving the club with the most unprecedented record of eight consecutive away defeats in the Premier League.

The Gunners away record has been unbelievable, and when Wenger was inevitably asked about his future in the pre-game press conference, Le Prof insisted that winning today was much more important for the club. “At the moment I don’t think about my future at all,” he said. “I don’t realise it’s my last press conference because I have just the Huddersfield game in mind, and try to do my job as well as I can until the last minute I’m here.”

“I will say to the players, ‘Look we have to prepare for the future, and the best way to do that is to win your last game and go in a positive mind into next season’.

“We have gone through a season of ups and downs but they have always created something special and I would like that to come out in the last game by the way we play it. In fairness that’s what they did last at Leicester and I hope that for them, the best way to prepare for next season is to win the next game.”

To be fair Arsenal couldn’t have hoped for a better fixture to finally get an away win than a game against the Premiership new boys Huddersfield who we have beaten in all four games against them in the last 3 years. It has also been 13 years since Arsenal last lost the closing game of the season, and as Huddersfield have happily avoided relegation they will be having celebrations of their own on earning another season in the top flight.

The players will surely be wanting to give Arsene Wenger one final send off, but whether they can actually win an away game remains to be seen….

  1. meaningless game…

Huddersfield would be taking it easy…..their players have already started partying

might as well field the reserves and let them gain some experience….

  2. I hope arsenal do not win and everybody sees how incapable Wenger is(many AKBs still don’t want Wenger to go).Mourinho was right – Wenger is a voyeur and specialist in failure.Bring on Allegri or Enrique!

  3. Just want this game done with and this season to end! And hopefully we can name a new manager like soon not after the world cup! What annoys me is the bull Gazidis talks.. like how we do things different to other clubs we have class and integrity and all this crap! What makes us more special than anyone? That we keep underachievers at this club far longer than we should? We keep a manager on a world class salary who went nearly 10 years without winning anything and when we finally win something we increase his salary and contract, we charge highest ticket prices in Europe possibly the world because we pass backwards and sideways and call it attractive football! We let our highest earner choose when he plays..no I know we’re so different we won’t even go for a manager we’ll go down the second hand route and get a former player the non Spanish international Mikel Arteta! Is that what Gazidis is talking about? I just hope I’m wrong this time but this Arsenal board/ owner are a bunch of clowns who do not care about winning or the fans! If Arteta is chosen to be the new manager then we’ll know for sure how ambitious this lot are but my gut feeling is they want a younger version of Wenger and a team that sells tickets to tourists completely ignoring the fact we have a terribly unbalanced team and is certainly not a job for a man who’s 36 years old and has never managed anyone! We need a man who’s experienced, who can handle characters, make big decisions and firstly fix that shambles of a defence! Now if Allegri is out of the question go ahead and snap up Ancellotti the man is a winner he’s won the European cup 3 times he’s won it also as a player.. if our board think the guy sat next to Guardiola is a better option than a 3 times European cup winner who has handled big big names and clubs then we know for sure where this club is headed and that’s not up! Rant over.

    1. Totally agree about Artetta he was a good player but good players dont always make good managers especially if they have never managed at any leve. It’s too big a risk to appoint him without any experience then sack him if he fails to deliver. We definitely need some one with a winning mentality who will take no nonsense from over paid players with BIG ego’s.

        1. Agreed m8 ,I’ve got a bad feeling we will be waiting all summer to get a manager ,pretty much like how we sign players ,takes like 3 months to get a deal done ,while other teams seem to put a bid in ,then bang thevr signed.also arteta wasn’t the best of players in my opinion he was only signed after we got wallpoped 8-2 then went out and bought all those panic buys ..it as to be a big named manager this time or I fear the worst

          1. Agreed mate Arteta was a mediocre player and wouldn’t have been signed if not for that horror show at old Trafford.. all of a sudden he’s an arsenal legend.. we turned down Guardiola to keep Wenger now we possibly want his number 2? Complete idiot’s are running our club!

            1. ???? Exactly mate Gotta blame the board as much as wenger for this mess were in , should have acted sooner in replacing him and the way they go about there business alll seceretly and stuff really pisses me off .like just get the business done

    2. IT WOULD INDEED BE A COLOSSALLY STUPID AND CALAMITOUS DAY AT OUR CLUB IF ARTETA IS CHOSEN!

  4. 22 years 3,000 interviews yet he
    actually never said anything.
Wenger always spoke down to the fans.
“Why should I tell them anything when they are all idiots”.
“Mental strength” won games and losses were always
blamed on “poor referees and cheating opponents”.
He is nearly 70 yet made it clear it was not his decision to stand down.
“How dare any one ask me to leave when I have 20 good years left
and besides no one else could possible manage this team”.
Wenger should have gone in 2009 and would have but
was saved by Kroeneke’s “trophies are too expensive” 4th place model.
Wenger who had been burnt by Mou and Fergie gladly accepted
the 7 mill salary to run the 4th place model and cultivate a decade of
overpaid, under achieving lightweights with no pressure to win anything.
“Forget Wenger”? Ok I will try.
Just make sure we don’t get another Wenger megalomaniac
and if we do act sooner… much sooner.

  5. Arteta is welcome, you can’t despise him until he fails, coaching is not rocket science give him the badges

    1. @Counsel the in house
      Justarsenal devils
      Dick advocate.
Under your 15th numb de plum I see.
      Welcome back 🙂
Yes you are right MA is the man.
He has badges for ironing Pep’s yellow ribbon,
putting the training cones out and taking down the nets.
Yes I conquer with your thoughts Arteata is ready to win the FA Cup PL/CL treble 🙂
His first signing will be Sébastien Squillaci quickly followed
by Abou Diaby Yaya sanogo and Marouane Chamakh 🙂
Arsenal 2019 PL Campiones is as good as done.

  6. Wenger managed 1200 games with 57% win rate surely that’s above average and today we say goodbye. Huddersfield fans will have a moment of applaud at the 22 minutes in honour of Wenger 22yrs of management, hope we will join them. Finally an away win will come today,Viva!

  7. There is a reason why Arteta is quiet on being linked to manage arsenal simply because he has been contacted and accepted the offer, according the arsenal policy our deals are secretive. His announcement will come at the right time

    1. Sky is now reporting
      Ian Holloway who left
his job at QPR 3 days ago is now
      the bookies favourite to replace
Arsene wenger as the new Arsenal managers.
Great news. Always thought he was the best manager in England…

      1. Hahaha he’s got more experience than Arteta and tbh he would get the same welcome. Council has been spouting this ? for weeks due to high s own inadequacies

  8. I just don’t want Artetta or Rogers….. non of them… we deserve better.. way way better.. we don’t want any trail and error with Arsenal Team we want Tested and Confirmed Coach.. give me Massimiliano Allegri all day long and we will have some chills around the club. But if he’said to big a name for the Arsenal Board then Leonardo Jardim and Maurizio Sarri would be on a low for the Board I suppose. But anything lower that is Criminal… ??

  9. I mean “if he is too big a name for the Arsenal Board” ** Autocorrection.

  10. Roll on tomorrow and the season finished. We’ve had weeks now of ill-informed speculation. It feels just like one of the boring and interminable Arsenal transfer sagas of recent years. Taking a very long time and going nowhere because they will appoint Steve Bould or the tea-lady. That’s if they can distinguish between the two.

    1. The tea lady every time!!!!!at least she moves around unlike Bould who just sits there chewing gum.

  11. We actually have to win so this horrible away record doesn’t carry over to the next season for the new manager and the players, it will be like a terrible gift left behind by wenger. We all know the media will bring up the stats by the first away game next season putting more pressure on the manager and team.

  12. No game is meaningless. I want us to play well and win well today.
As a Gooner I always want a win. Forget all the crap about Wenger, we wanted him gone and he’s gone. Big ups to our away support today.

  13. Am sure bould made gun expensive… cause he chews on the damn thing every now and then with is washed look…. ?

  14. I saw this yesterday and I almost burst into tears… ;
Arsenal not close to appointing new manager. No agreement yet on chosen candidate, negotiations at relatively early stage, thorough process ongoing, next week looks unrealistic. Once decided, IG/RS/SM will present recommendation to #AFC board. Arteta among names being considered ??

    1. Due diligence takes time. Of course Arteta is being considered as are others, me, you and a lot of others on here don’t want but you consider them, toss them aside and get to the right answer in the end. Hopefully it will be Jardim, Nagelsmann or Allegri, in that order. But that’s just my opinion, others will differ but whoever gets the job will have my support, at least to start with……..

  15. BBC have just announced that
Allan Pardew Bob Bradley +Tony Pulis
head the short list of Arsenal
    managerial candidates.

  16. What worries me about the new manager appointment is this:
1 arsenal pride themselves in being a nice and fair club with this comes weak and too familiar management styles.
    2. I believe one of the biggest criteria for selecting the manager is ‘will they do what we say? / will we get any c*application off them? Ie are they difficult?’
This is why Arteta is in the frame he always was a company man, the first into class with an apple for the teacher!
    3. From this what I fear is that Arsenal will continue to not be a sacking club. Don’t get me wrong these clubs that have a frequent turn of manager as part of their business model I think are a bit crazy and goodness knows what it costs in pay outs.
But will gazidis have the nuts to sack a manager when it’s not going well? And will kroenke back it with the payout required?
I hope I’m wrong but I think they are trying to get Arteta and say welcome this is yours for the Long term, dangerous!
