Has Falcao failure forced Arsenal to give up on transfer window?

Arsenal were supposed to be `very active` on transfer deadline day today, but the silence from the Emirates is deafening and us fans are starting to worry that the deadline will come without Arsene Wenger adding a single extra player to the Arsenal squad.

In fact, Wenger seems to have knocked off for the day according to a Talksport report that claims the Frenchman has flown to Italy to be the referee in a charity football match. Really I am not making this up, although I hope that somebody is.

If you were planning to be very active on a certain day, would you schedule a trip to Italy for halfway through that day? Maybe Wenger only had one target for today, with the Evening Standard reporting this morning that the Gunners were trying everything to bring the Colombian striker Radamel Falcao to the Emirates.

And now that we have lost out on that deal to Man United, which I am still finding hard to believe, then Wenger really does not have any more targets available that he thinks could improve on the players we already have at the club. If that is true, then the scouting system needs an overhaul.

Are we really going to finish a third transfer window without signing a striker or defensive midfielder?

    1. stop kidding yourself. What 3 hours? We are not close to signing anyone, I just don’t understand why we missed on Falcao???WHY???probably wenger didn’t want to spend that much cash on a striker. Bizarre how united have signed him and we missed out. Fuk wenger’s vision and ambitions.

      1. Wenger said he couldn’t afford Falcao, has everybody forgotten he’s makes $350k per week? I can’t believe there were supporters ate yo the Falcao rumors. We won’t pay Kherida for $170k a week but then were linked to a player making double that? The media baited us and (some) people took the bait.

        Wenger screwed up, I can’t dispute this, but many people screwed up in taking this ludicrous Falcao rumor.

    1. Wenger has failed to put together a cohesive and complete squad unless he brings in at least 4 players in the next few hours – also need to send 3 or 4 players out.

    2. We (fans) have failed to extricate KJ from this site as he continues churn out his nonsensical player ratings and insult the intelligence of every football fan on the planet.

  4. We gave up on this transfer window a long time ago. Playing an inexperienced, French youngster out of a long term injury to lead Arsenal’s line and still claiming that we had too many strikers is the mentality that got us here.

    1. Agree. Relying on Sonogo, an unproven youngster who couldn’t even break into Auxeres first teams is absolutely the lowest of the low.

      My colleagues are pissing themselves in the office about this absolute shambles. What is wenger doing today? Gone to Rome for a charity match. This amounts to gross negligence but as stan and ga isis have CL football, FA cup and we signed a world class player they couldn’t give two hoots. The rot continues and we will be found out this season. I have no doubt about it this time !!!!

  9. Well, the Falcao transfer to man united is one conducted by a manager who plans to succeed for that season only. The transfer shows a lack of long term planning. Just imagine, a 12m for a season loan, that is one third of Costa cost.. Seems like LVG plans to stay in Man united for one to two seasons and then run away.

    We need a treat of an exciting player…highest ticket prices in league, but nothing to set the pulses racing.
    I have been a staunch AW supporter, but our terrible start (games have been grim) and this last minute scramble to sign anyone, is soul destroying.
    I will forgive everything if he signs Reus, but otherwise…..
    Everyone and his mother can see that Sanogo would struggle to hack it in the Championship, but it’s looking likely that he will be leading the line.
    Prove us wrong Arsene, pleeeease

  19. Rumors on Reus for €40m picking up again. You guys might think this doesn’t solve the striker issue but I genuinely believe Reus has a future as a world class striker. We’d just have to adapt to not playing with a muscle man upfront. Pfff, like it’s an issue choosing between Giroud and Reus leading the line.

    1. Oh and btw, the source is AS this time. They also say the bid was turned down… Dortmund is mad if they turn down a €40m bid for a player that will go to Bayern next year for €25m. Maybe it’s a problem with direct cash or installments.

    If no one significant is signed today, I see it as an inexcusable failure on the Arsenal management teams front.
    I vow to not contribute in any way financially to Arsenal, (tickets, merchandise etc) until the manager and board demonstrate understanding direction and ambition.
    If they cant do this then a change in leadership is required.

  23. There is no chance that Arsenal can keep everything secretive. There are journos and reporters and betting companies worldwide who need to know these things.

    There has not been one sniff of news coming out of the emirates and with only 5 hours to go.

  25. Fast forward to April 2015 when we are struggling to get 4th place and hoping other teams drop points… But this was supposed to be the summer… When we finally added enough quality in our team to allow us to become a powerhouse once again.

  26. Realistically, it doesn’t look like anyone will be on the way. Atleast not a prolific striker, maybe a loan deal but for who? He’s in Rome so maybe Destro? Genuinely baffled by this, Wenger can’t be that oblivious to our weaknesses, or maybe he’l surprise i seriously hope he does.

    2013: Tried for Higuain, didn’t get. Tried for Suarez, didn’t get. Both are south american strikers. Got Özil on deadline day.
    2014: Tried for Cavani, didn’t get. Tried for Falcao, didn’t get. Both are south american striker. Get ??? on deadline day.

    What makes me wonder what we are doing is that a club like Hull signed Abel Hernandez as a front man. Not the very best but a very decent striker we could have had, miles better than Sanogo.

  38. Objectively speaking, I don’t think we’ve done bad in the transfer window. The problem is, the board and Wenger have given us hope and as of now, they aren’t close to finishing what they started with our 4 initial signings. What happened to “Sanchez is only the start” (Gazidis)?

      a cdm is needed since gilberto left.

      wenger thinks that walcott will solve our attacking problems. PROBLEM is: we r doomed when he gets injured (not unlikely if u take a look at his injury record).

      sanogo is injury prone too.

      and just imagine kos or mert (or even both) get injured… we only hav chambers as back up (our best transfer this season!)

      if we signed matuidi/ cavalho and welbeck/ bony + cb it would be a great transfer. but we havnt!

    How long is it going to take people to relies that he is useless and that when he came to Arsenal he inherited a great team.
    He is not a winner and never will be coming 4th is great for him.

    This time last year we were in top position and last that position after Christmas this year we are already falling behind our main opposition and in 1/2 games it will be to late.

    Does this Arrogant idiot really know what he is doing so far his team selection has been terrible and tactics non existence.

    Time for the board of Directors to wake up and really work out if his achievements are so great.

  56. I was looking forward to this season more than any other in recent years. We’d come so close in the league, and finally won a trophy. With our perennial Champions League participation in the bag, and the club’s fantastic financial position, one could be forgiven for feeling slightly optimistic about the up coming season. Yet with only hours left of Deadline Day, I’m very depressed about things.

    I’d always been an AKB up until the 3-0 defeat to Everton last season. That result, coupled with Wenger’s shocking performances in the two transfer windows for last season finished it for me.

    And here we go again! I cannot believe he continually refuses to address the striker and defensive midfielder issues in our squad. Even years ago when it easier for us, and there was only two teams going for the title each year (ourselves and Man Utd), we still needed a world class striker to compete. Henry was his name. Now it’s harder than ever to win the league with the likes of ManC, L’pool, Chel, and ManU all spending big, and having at least one world class striker each. Yet Wenger STILL won’t get a world class striker in!!!!! Then we have the defensive midfielder problem. Gilberto Silva, who was absolutely class, left us in 2008, and Wenger has never replaced him. That was 6 years ago! The only player to come close was Song, but he wasn’t disciplined enough as he often ventured forward. I don’t know why Wenger keeps overlooking these two massively important positions.

    As I write this I’m hearing we may be in for Welbeck. Oh dear god no!!!!!!!!!

    – He’s better than the current Sanogo.
    – He offers above average speed.
    – He’s 23.
    – He’s a Sturridge clone! (Look at the hair cut.)
    – Sturridge sucked at Chelsea.
    – Rumors say this is a loan deal.
    – Desperate times, desperate measures…

    I hope this means we have enough money for a big transfer in DM or CB or both.

  75. I can’t see how Welbeck signing is all that bad. He is quick, can play wing or up front, he’s good in the air, got UCL experience. Having him on the left with Sanchez up front and Walcott RW would be a pacy front three. I know he’s not Falcao but he ain’t as bad as people are making out.

  76. Well, it may be a longshot at this point, but if there is any truth to the rumours about Kondogbia, he’d be an excellent addition to our squad.

    It definitely feels like a kick in the pants to not get Falcao, and to be at this point in the window and still have needs that haven’t been addressed. I’m sure we’d all have loved to get Falcao as he is truly a world class forward, but who says he even wanted to play for us and that we even had a shot at him.

    Welbeck at this point would be decent. He’s not world class but has good potential, and is a far more finished prospect than Sanogo at this point. He’d add a bit of pace to our frot line, and probably wouldn’t cost a fortune either.
