Has this Arsenal striker found his level in the Belgian League?

There were great hopes for the Arsenal youngster Chuba Akpom when he came through the ranks scoring goals for fun, but once promoted to the first team he seemed to lose his mojo and goalscoring boots and was a great disappointment to Arsenal fans.

He was finally sent out on loan last year after a particularly spectacular drunk driving incident but he seemed to start scoring again in the Belgian First Division A and it now looks like he will be given a permanent deal after being omitted from Arsenal’s pre-season tour. CompleteSportsNigeria reported today….

Nigerian born England forward Chuba Akpom is close signing a permanent deal with Belgian club Sint-Truiden, switchfrom English Premier League outfit, Arsenal.

Akpom, 22, spent the second half of last season on loan with the modest side and scored six goals in 16 appearances.

He was not included in the Gunners’ 25-man squad for the tour of Singapore released on Friday, an indication that he might not be in the plans of new boss Unai Emery.

According to The Independent, the North London outfit are looking to receive in the region of £2m for the striker who has only made one start and 11 substitute outings for Arsenal senior team.

All Arsenal fans once had great hopes for Akpom, but now it looks like he is only worth £2million, and even that is pushing it a bit! Maybe he will suddenly come good and become a true striker again in the future but it looks like he another promising Arsenal youngster that just couldn’t make the grade…

  1. well, yeah. Never got off to the start he needs. Just include a buy back in 2 years if deal is worth just 2mil

  2. not every one will make the grade….

if everyone does we will be changing the 25 man squad every season

  3. Some young players make it here, some dont. Akpom, Sanogo didn’t. Iwobi, Bellerin have

Problem is that we relied too much on youngsters with Wenger ie Iwobi. Wenger started him way too much. He didn’t even try Perez or hardly played him.

Wenger relied on Coquelin too much instead of getting a top defensive midfielder then got rid of him and then relied on El Neny. Wenger made Bellerin far too comfortable and his quality deteriorated. No competition. Debuchy was either injured or Wenger hardly played him.

Very few youngsters become good enough to justify being a regular starter.

In my opinion Our best prospects seem to be:
    Reiss Nelson
    Nketiah
    Maitland Niles
    Jeff Adelaide
    They look really good.
But we must sign top experienced players until the youngsters are good enough. If they are. Not rely on them early.

I am sure Emery has more common sense than Wenger. Getting Torreira, a quality defensive midfielder shows that. He knows what we need. He didn’t get someone cheap who is low quality or ignored that position entirely.

    1. i like this selection although the order of distinction in terms of showing ability to make an impact at a higher level is as follows:-
      AMN
      NKetiah
      Reiss Nelson
      Jeff Adelaide

I was impressed by Nketiah’s 2 goals – vs Norwich – in which for me he distinguished himself even from his team mate Reiss. i suspect AMN and Nketiah are the only ones who’l ever carve a future at this club playing at higher level.
