How important is it to be top of the League at Christmas?

Christmas No.1 – How the leaders on Christmas Day have fared in every Premier League season

Top of the table on December 25th. Just how important is it to be the Premier League’s Christmas number one?

Fantasy football game www.oulala.com have looked back at every single Premier League season to find out which side was leading on Christmas day and where they finished at the end of the season.

Oulala’s table shows that last year’s champions Chelsea have the best record when it comes to being top at Christmas. The Blues have led on Christmas day on each of the four occasions that they have won the Premier League title in 2005, 2006, 2010 and 2015. However, this season Jose Mourinho’s side will not be repeating that feat.

Both Blackburn Rovers and Manchester City join Chelsea with 100 per cent records in claiming the league title after leading on December 25th in 1994 and 2011 respectively. However, the two sides have only managed it once.

Liverpool have the worst record when leading the Premier League on Christmas day. On all three occasions that the Reds have topped the table in 1996, 2008 and 2013, they have failed to go on and claim the title.

Arsenal’s record is not much better than Liverpool’s. The Gunners led the Premier League twice on December 25th in both 2002 and 2007 but failed to capitalise, finishing second and third.

Aston Villa hold the record of the biggest drop from all the Christmas day table-toppers. In 1999 the Villans ended up falling to sixth by the final game of the season. Overall, less than half of the teams that have led the league table on Christmas day have gone on to collect the title.

In what looks set to be the closest and toughest fought out title race ever, will the Christmas day leaders this season be the same team that lifts the trophy come May?

  1. sorry to dig up oLd memories …… But i can’t possibly imagine where arsenal should have been had we beat Norwich, spuds, west brom and westham back then

well, those are all bygones….we have a chance to redeem ourselves…… This could be the season!

    1. We needed those games to be where we are now. Confidence is high, team spirit is good because we recovered. As in life, football is a bumpy road..

  2. I believe tgere are 3 titke contenders this year Leicester, city and arsenal
About Leicester they are doing great but there football depends on counter attacking and few quick passes to reach the ball to mahrez or vardy i don’t think they can impress anybody if they faced teams that park the bus like what the teams do with arsenal and also any injury for mahrez or vardy will ruin there season so i don’t consider them a real challenge and in an open game we got the best out of them and beat them with 5 goals to 2 so calm down gooners
About city they had very impressing start for the season then they were vety baf winning most games by pure luck or last minute goals and they could be beaten easily
Arsenal are the best team form we controled most of the games and the losses and draws were by bad referee decisions or bad luck and the 4 points margain with city could have been easily 10 or 12

So gooners beleive in the lads it is our season

  3. After the FA cup, we have three tricky consecutive matches. If we can get at least 7 points from them, then we can dream. These are:
    Liverpool away
    Stoke away
    Chelsea home

  4. After securing a DM I think we should put in a cheeky bid for James from Ream Madrid. I’m sure he can play on the wing as well lol.

      1. Can’t have them thinking that they belong at the big boys table in the ECL with us, we’d never hear the end of it 🙂

  5. You look at Leicester city and think. They are doing good but they wont be eable to keep it up till the end. Same can be said to Arsenal.

Leicerter city have not the capacity to strengthen, where we do. Its up to Wenger now. If we are serious we will be spending money. If he refuses, this will tell itself where we are aiming for.

Kokorin and Wanyama are urgency transfers to compete. 25mil spending to cover for the epl title is nothing.

My personal2 dream players who i think can transform and make Arsenal acutally stronger then we actually are.

Where spending 40 mil on Jones will cover our defense for the next 10 years. ( give them chamberlain if they play hard).

Where spending 30 mil on Lucas Moura will cover our wing for the next 10 years. Liverpool should not get him ever.
