Is Arsenal’s lack of confidence the players fault or Wenger’s?

Everybody has been very quick to lay all the blame for Arsenal’s awful season and slump in form on Arsene Wenger, but he is not the one out on the pitch making schoolboy errors and missing easy shots. That is simply down to the players who are not doing the job that are extremely highly paid to do well, and they are supposed to be amongst the best and most successful in the world!

One of our biggest problems this season has been our defence, and Laurent Koscielny has been one of the biggest culprits in our slump, but he is at a loss to explain why the squad has lost it’s confidence suddenly after so many years of being a top team. “We know we are in a bad situation, a bad period,” he said.

“We tried but nothing is with us. We tried to fight and play football but you could see the confidence is very down. We miss a lot of things during the game but we need to push more again and again. The confidence will be back slowly. We know we need to win to have a little bit more confidence in us. We lost a little bit of our quality but we need to stay united.”

“It is very hard because when you play for a big club like Arsenal you need to be in the Top Four,”

“I think it has been difficult for everyone, maybe the first time for all of them,”

“We are not confident in our quality individually and collectively,”

“The players have the responsibility on the pitch, the boss has responsibilities too and we have to be together,”

“It is difficult to say if it is his fault or our fault. The club are together and we need to stay together.”

So have we lost our confidence because we are not in the Top Four? Or are we not in the Top Four because we have lost our confidence?

Are the players just not capable any more and should be replaced? Or has the manager lost the ability to motivate the players?

Whatever the real reason, it is Wenger that is getting all the blame, but should the players be getting some as well?

  1. According to reports wenger has told his coaching staff he won’t leave before the expiry of his contract in 2019.
He intends to honour his contract.

    times,the sun

    psychotic.
    ?????????

    1. Who can leave a job with eight million salary per year

The lack of confidence, weak mentality and tendency to play safe are the responsibility of the manager, despite his salary is not the highest in the club (the highest one is Ozil with 17 millions per year)

Having said that, several Arsenal players still have to be replaced because of their erratic performances and low skill levels. True world class player should be able to motivate himself and be the engine for his team, like Sanchez previously

  2. any chance of righting this ship ended two seasons ago when the club didn’t re-up Sanchez, after his glorious season,(he should have been given the armband) then failed to get the proper reinforcements at the Striker and DM positions during that offseason…we could have been a contender if it weren’t for our skinflint owner and self-absorbed arrogant manager, who is far too fragile nowadays to be in the same locker room with charismatic and driven players

  3. That is what is on the news. If our ex players have organised themselves and find away to get the coach replace now by meeting with Josh and Stan Kroenke instead of constantly talking on the TV and radio the club won’t be in this mess.

  4. Actually this may be worse than i thought
I think Wenger has the power stone (orb)too. Not just the soul gem. That’s why he has had the power to stay manager for decades. And maybe the mind stone (loki scepter) too because he can control the minds of Kroenke and the board to keep him in the job and pay him £9 million a year.

He may have used the eye of Agamotto (time gem) to get them.

  5. Wenger is a good hypnotist, he’s managed to hypnotize the board for years, he’s even managed to hypnotize poor Sam in to thinking its everyone else’s fault but his. The rest of us don’t think he’s Derren Brown and have known he has been dragging us down for years, the board have slowly realized this and have been putting in a new structure that will hopefully take us forward or at least stop us from being a laughing stock.

  6. True.

80 – 90 percent is surely the fault of Wenger and the board, but too many individual mistakes that professional players don’t make even if managed by Allardyce or someone on that level.

  7. So you think these guys would be making same mistakes every week if they play under Mourinho or Simeone? Only under Wenger do these mistakes gets tolerated no matter who makes them and how many times per game, they are ensured in the 1st eleven for the next game.

90% Wenger fault and 10% players’ fault. Wenger bought all of them and I see every good player becomes mediocre the moment he plays his first Arsenal game. No ruthlessness, no tactical approach, no change if things when things aren’t going our way, only folding hands on his seat and attacking the officials. He blames everyone but himself coz he’s God, he makes no errors

  8. If a manager has no control of the confidence of his squad he is not much of a manager.

  9. Sam I think you are right. How can fans expect Wenger to have any influence over players confidence.
