Is Arteta and Arsenal’s other new arrivals set up to continue Wenger’s legacy?

After Max Allegri had announced that he had no intention of leaving Juventus unless he was sacked, which is hardly likely to happen considering his amazing record since arriving at the Old Lady, it would appear that the the most likely person to replace Arsene Wenger is our old midfielder Mikel Arteta, who has spent his time since retiring as assistant to Pep Guardiola at Man City.

When he left the club, he admitted that he had had serious talks with the Arsenal heirarchy about his future, and he revealed a little when he was asked about his coaching future: ““I don’t want to say clubs but I have three very different options and I am very proud, because it is not common,” he said. “I have been left the door very open [at Arsenal] and I may have to make a decision.

“I don’t want to talk. I have so much respect for this club, what they think about me and what they have shown in the last few weeks that they want to do with me, that I cannot talk about any other things…”

So perhaps it was implied that the Gunners were looking at him being the long term heir to Wenger’s position, and it is no secret that Gazidis and Co are keen to maintain Wenger’s values and commitment to the club. Petr Cech also maintained recently that although Wenger has now gone, his philosophy should be continued. “The most important thing will be to continue the legacy of Arsenal Football Club,” Cech said. “The club has a certain philosophy and has been built around the game of football and the way the club presents itself and the way the team plays football. It will be great if we can carry on that legacy.”

Well no matter what the fans think about bringing in an experienced coach, there is no doubt that the Spaniard knows how the club is run, and perhaps it is no coincidence that there are other former Gunners being brought in as well. Jens Lehmann arrived this season as a coach, and now we hear that Freddie Ljungberg will be joining the club as a youth coach, and of course Per Mertesacker will also be taking over in charge of the youths this summer.

It looks like there is an onflux of staff that have been trained in “The Arsenal Way” and that seems to make it even more likely that Arteta will definitely be the new coach, and could there be even more ex-Gunners arriving as well?

  1. If the Club hierarchy are bent on appointing Mikel Arteta we the fans will have no option but to wish him well. However we shall continue to sound a note if caution that Arteta is still a novice in management and the Club would have needed a more experienced manager. If Arteta performs beyond expectation that will be great for the club. We shall apologise for our initial lack of confidence in him. If on the other hand he flops we shall clearly point out that we expected it and put the Board and management to task for disregarding our well considered views. The ball is in the court of the powers at Arsenal.

    1. I believe Arteta will be a good manager one day maybe even a very good one. You can tell that he’s sharper than many of his footballing peers just by listening to him in an interview. But I felt the same way about G Neville as allot of other people did. Sometimes it’s maybe not how good you are with different languages and being up on your general knowledge and stuff. Maybe they just need to know football well and know how to drag more out of players. But then that brings me to Adams, if the last part is true Adams should have been an inspiring acquisition for any club. So I guess I’m saying it’s very difficult to tell if any young manager will come good or not. He’ll certainly need us fans behind him if he to succeed, lately we’ve shown what a good fan base we can be, we need to do that more and more for whomever gets the nod…

      1. Break-on-through, so you and other’s felt Neville was going to make a good manager. Why? because he talks a good game on the television. Let me tell you, he’s just a big mouth blue eyed boy along with his brother who are constantly lapped up by the media because of their Manchester United links. Anyone can talk a good game after the event, it’s doing before the event that makes you special and when it came to coaching or management for England or Valencia respectively, he flopped big time.

        1. wenger has been at Arsenal for 22 years may be the longest serving manager in Europen football with a lot of experience so what did we got from that:
missing Champion league in two years
and what about Zidane? long he has been a manager within 5 years but 2 European champion so Arteta will be just fine

          1. He is having limitless money on transfer…. He is having Ronaldo, Isco, Benzema, Kroose Marcelo, Pepe, Bale in squad…. Tomorrow you and me can win anything with this kind of squad players..

            1. But wenger put those limit on himself the so called “self sustained/philosophy wait till the last minutes of transfer window and try to buy players while you have over three months to do that and being loyal to players who are not good enought ie Walcott

              1. Wenger never put limits on himself he lived within our means. He could of had Real/Psg/United money. If you are stupid enough to think Wenger choose not to spend money that was there though then you need serious help.

              2. Yep……he did……..Arteta is the right coach for Arsenal………he is the prototype of a good coach…….an average athlete………reads the game very well………..there are reasons why Arsenal wanted Mertesacker and Arteta as coaches……..they are both hard workers……..

    2. Not only just being a novice in Manager role, He also did not really had overwhelming or standout performance on the field. The fans are not look for a liaison officer here or a go-between.
What will Arteta bring, he personified sideway passing as a midfielder at Arsenal.
Maybe nobody is ready to be deceived again after how they stabbed Arsene at the back.

      1. RichSAAlao,

Now that last sentence is an interesting thought?
wonder if there is any truth in it?

  2. ALL ROADS HOPEFULLY LEAD US TO JULIAN NAGELSMANN A TACTICIAN WHO LIKE WENGER LIVES AND BREATHS FOOTBALL HE TOOK HIS CLUB FROM POSSIBLE RELEGATION TOO CHAMPIONS LEAGUE IN TWO YEARS.
ARSENAL PAY THE COMPENSATION NEEDED TO OBTAIN A TRULY POTENTIAL GREAT MANAGER.

    1. I think Arsenal are going for an unemployed and proven manager

The current unemployed and proven managers available are Enrique, Jardim, Emery, Ancelotti and Tuchel. I think they would appoint Tuchel because of our German spine

      1. The fact you even included Tuchel says everything about you. You’d of been stupid to include him 3 months ago btw. Your a regular poster too, great fanbase we have.

    2. @Drew Skysports just reported that Nagelsmann is front runner along with Arteta. I do hope its the German, he has an excellent CV. for such a young coach. I would be apprehensive but excited to see him as Head Coach of Arsenal. I think Sven and Raul and Julian could slowly build an excellent team here in North London. I would be happy to give him the benefit of doubt, with Arteta – Like Jon Fox said – he probably has 10 games to show what he is made off. Which is just as unfair to him as it is to the players and the fans, but it is the reality.
We have a saying here in the US.
“You pay peanuts you get monkeys”

      1. Nagelsmann i’d get behind, no idea why people dont want to get behind arteta but most people are genuinely stupid so shouldn’t be surprised.

        1. To add Arteta only gets 10 games if a portion of our fanbase are tools. Plain and simple not the other way round. You can’t say its unfair without calling out the idiots that will make it so.. c’mon did you ever actually think about this in depth? Its the idiots not arteta that are the problem right… that should be obvious…. they dont have a right to anything… except protesting 6th place finished (our historic level btw certainly when you add city/chelsea money)

  3. This will be a one of the most idiotic things I’ve seen this club do ,(and I’ve seen a lot)if he is appointed .
If he is to become the new manager it points to one thing, they want to be able to control him as a yes sir manager ,abit like Southgate and the England setup
Again we will be cutting corners like usual ,if any top manager was to come they would want to do it there way which means spendeing loads of money to get us out of this mess which to me looks like the board are happy to go down the arteta route .I for one will not be happy ,now is not the time to be experimenting .

    1. I hear people say Arteta will be a good manger, how many clubs in Europe will hire Arteta, how many clubs in championship will hire Arteta, how much experience does he have, because he is number 3 to Pep that qualifies him. When Wenger was hire that was 22 years ago, this is 2018 guys!!! I will not follow this club again if it hires Arteta. I have used my blood, money and emotions to support this club all the years it has failed under Wenger. I will not be doing it again with Arteta. He was the one they were thinking of when they wanted Wenger to go, so all these interviews are just shambles so that no one will question, else why would his name come up at all immediately Wenger was asked to leave. If he is hired I am gone!!!

      1. anko,
So, from reading your post, I assume you have been actually supporting our CLUB and using your “blood, money and emotions” for exactly two years.
Such a shame you missed out on the all the years it has “failed under Wenger” such as:
Three premier league titles – seven fa cup wins – twenty consecutive CL involvement and, of course….. The Invincibles.
We are now moving on under who knows and I am sure, like me, you will support the CLUB, but just wanted to sympathise with you over what you missed.
If you go, you won’t be missedbecause we need supporters who stay with the CLUB through thick and thin.

        1. A lot more thin than thick though my friend
Has fans we deserve better than what we have been given -we payed off the stadium excuse years ago and are now the 6-7 richest club in the world ,it’s about time we started acting like it .can you imagine if arteta comes in ,what world class players are going to come here .weve has excuses for the last 10 years this shirt needs to stop

          1. So if you don’t agree with whoever is appointed as the new manager, you will stop supporting the CLUB?
That makes you one hell of a …cant think of the words…oh yes Iv’e got it…SPINELESS SNOWDROP.
So go and support another club then, I’m sure they will appreciate your diehard attitude.

            1. Where in my post do I say I don’t support the club you keyboard warrior .maybe discuss rather than try and act tuff behind a computer screen . Some of us proper fans wants what’s best for our club after the years of shit but idiots like you think the Best thing to say is go support another team ,maybe look in the mirror and have a look at yourself ,that’s if you haven’t got it covered with a wenger poster

              1. Xxnofx,
I was actually discussing the post of anko with him and what he proposed to do (not follow this club again) if Arteta gets the managers position.
However, I thank you for recognising me as a keyboard warrior and, for an elderly gentleman like myself, that is indeed a grand title.
My grandsons will love it and laugh their heads off at the thought of it.
I would have assumed us proper fans would all want the same thing wouldn’t you?
So I suspect you actually agree with my summing up of anko as, surely, he is not a proper fan and my suggestion that he carries through his threat, leaves the gooner family and then “supports” another club as he is so frustrated with ours does make sense?

Finally, as a proper fan of over sixty years, can I humbly inform you that I have seen more s**t following my CLUB than you could ever imagine? I have also seen and heard more idiots than I care to remember, no names no packdrill.
But I do thank you for your seeing me as a tuff old fellow, I’ll get out of my chariot now, look in the mirror and pretend I’m that handsome frenchman Arsene the Terrible Tyrant.

        2. If that is what you think then you aren’t very intelligent or you think we have been successful over a very long period of time. I am not going to be childish and educate you on how long I have been a fan or when was the last time Arsenal won, or compete for the premier league, or do very well in champions league. But I stand by my decision not to support Arsene with Arteta as the manger because the board feels the other manger are to expensive. I will not buy their tickets!!! If their reason is because they want to give him a chance that will be different

          1. How many champion league has Mr Wenger won for you personally all the years he had qualified arsenal to champions league, let’s face the truth arsenal is moving towards the wrong direction.

      2. Aah! Man, I mean even now 22 years ago Wenger is by many miles far from today’s Mikel Art. No close to compare. No, not at all

      3. Calm down dude……..it’s only a game of sports………and you are not the footballer making the money……..yes an addiction………..Arteta or whoever is chosen will give their best shot……if unsuccessful…….another replacement will be found……..Arsenal is a business……..

  4. If the club wanted ex players who knew the Arsenal way why not Henry or Viera both legends and winners Arteta is neither
And Just a note of caution- the fact that Arteta has no experience will not allow fans to give him extra time. Minimum first year for ANY new manager is top 4 otherwise we may as well kept Wenger. IMO Arteta shows a complete lack of desire to achieve the top trophies. If he comes in and sets off to a flyer that may give him a little leeway if not the fans will be protesting toward him and the board

    1. Maybe because Arteta is actually a better coach? Or maybe Viera never got close to City’s first team because he was too good? Henry lol does that need addressing… really? seriously? Legend doesnt = manager look at tony

  5. Allegri sort of has to stay when you think about it. Arsene was infamous with his stance on honoring contracts. All the class managers stand by their contract. Pep Klopp even Mourinho, none of them would walk out on them unless dire circumstance. Allegri doing that to arrive at Arsenal would be very bad footing, a bad omen. Maybe it is an interim we are looking for but he will have a chance to make it permanent by gaining the results.

    1. ADMIN COMMENT
Swearing is not big and is not appreciated by a family orientated audience.

  6. Arteta appointment will make most of us even more mad. How can you jump to skip from a urine only to land on shit? We wanted wenger our for a better manager to take us to the next level, Arteta has managed no team, he’s under the shadows of Pep. If we want our ex players I think Henry could have a better shot. A legend

    1. Give Arteta a chance please as long as transfer matters has been taken over with Sanllehi and Sven we should be just fine they are gonna provide him with what he needs unlike wenger who has his way and belives of doing things or highway we are taking a different direction – you can have as big names manager/coach as you want but he will fail if he doesnt have quality group of players something which was wenger downfall – royalty first and quality next to my opinion for example Mert after he put in great performance against Chelsea in FA cup final he should have been replaced and retire and bring in somebody to come in and help defence going forward even Jon Evans could have been better but wenger the way he was running Asenal was pretty much like warfare i see in that way. And thats why Arsenal would rather have Arteta and help him same as Barcelona and Madrid doing their coaches dont really have power their just trainers and they can be told we need reinforferment in certain area end of the story but in wenger’s model will be described as interference.

      1. He has 0 experience, no CV. He has done nothing, there is no basis of choosing him,

As far as giving him a chance is concerned, we really dont have a say in that. If the club want him they will sign him. There is a chance that he might turn out to be a good coach but there is absolutely no data, no information, no past achievements that support that theory.

In this day and age of data and availability of information, choosing someone who has 0 data and information on how he might perform is a crazy big risk.

        1. Even Wenger with tons and tons of experience never win anything major in europe, quality and good set up will win you something like Madrid and Barcelona even Ajax did it few years ago with low profile players like Seedorf, Kluivert, Kanu, etc not Walcott who not a footballer

        2. that not true he has some experience as a coach for two years now as long as we got good people above him who are going to bring in right players we should be just fine wenger had a lot of experience but he was doing very very bad job on recruiting players bring in average or players who have medical issue ie Kalltrom

  7. I think there is more water to flow under the bridge before Arsenal decide who will be manager. The board will certainly have noticed the underwhelming fan reaction to Artetas name. This not wanting him (at any cost for many of us, me included)immediately puts enormous pressure to succeed straight away which will not happen , whoever manages. After all, we are without a complete defence and that is not going to change overnight. So the chance of Arteta, if it be he, starting on the right foot with fans is virtually nil. In the fullness of time, which he will not have, not enough anyway, he MAY indeed become a fine manager. But it would be a risky appointment should it happen. And that is HUGE understatement!

  8. Well, As i have written a few times before, I ws really afraid that it would come to this. Arteta, really?
It feels like an alternate Trumpian reality we are living in where everything normal is turned on it’s head.
My son and I used to play “opposites day” together where everything we said was the opposite of reality. “beautiful day” when it was rainy and cold etc… This seems like it.
What is the most opposite to alogical choice of manager we can appoint – I got it Arteta!!!
Of all the names that have been mentioned to replace Arsene, we are going with the one with the least amount of experience.
What is the criteria we are basing this choice on? I mean the guy does NOT have a cv. He hasn’t achieved anything as a footballer or a manger. He was a good solid, serious player. That is all we have on him, and that he sat on a bench close to Pep for a season. That’s it.
The lack of ambition of this owner and this board is unique in European football at this level.
Arteta will likely be appointed manager, even if he doesn’t, the fact that he is a front runner is a shame for Arsenal FC.

    1. He is a La Masia graduate and has been working with Guardiola, hence he could instill Barcelona’s system into Arsenal

He has also worked with Wenger and Moyes, so he should be able to compare their methods, strengths and weaknesses with Guardiola’s

Unlike the other candidates, he just recently left Arsenal, therefore he should know Arsenal’s recent problems and situation. Vieira and Henry might just reimplement Wenger’s Invicible system, which would not work anymore now

      1. @gotanidea. Barcelona’s system needs Barcelona type players. This is why even Pep admitted that he had to spend the type of money he did to be able to play the type of football he did.

We don’t have that type of money and we shouldn’t try to play that type of football. We need to become Dortmund, or Atletico or Liverpool or Chelsea not Barcelona or City those are teams built around a lot of money and incredible players.

If we are to compete at the top level again it will not be Wenger football, it hasn’t worked in a decade.

      2. Gotanidea,
Just picked up on your views about the Invincibles not working anymore?
Care to explain your reasoning behind that statement?
The Invincibles, in my opinion would blow anyone out of the water, including City.
The likes of Vieria and Petit, along with Keown etc would not let them dominate the game as, apart from Liverpool, every other team has this season.
Theres my thoughts, so look forward to yours.

          1. Based on a great defence, strength in midfield (Gilberto, Viera, Petit), the creative genius of Bergkamp and fast lethal finishers (centrally and from the wings).

        1. If it worked, Wenger would have used it after years of failure, because he was the one that created it

          1. The invincibles were not created ?half that team was handed down the rest wenger put together they had heart and steel as well as ability. If and I say if this was utilised today as ken says th et would wipe the floor with city and any of the upstarts of today. Wenger for all his ability lost track of what was the essence of the invincibles
Henry and Viera were the heart of that team and could have ideas of how to regenerate that model
Arteta cannot even be mentioned in the same breath as Wenger
And does not have the class or winning mentality of Henry or viera
The fact that you need this explaining shows your not a long term arsenal fan

            1. Wenger bought, selected and coached the Invicibles with his old system:

              Lehmann
              Lauren Toure Campbell Cole
              Ljungberg Vieira Silva Pires
              Bergkamp
              Henry

George Graham didn’t buy those players

              1. Gotanidea,
You are correct in saying that Wenger and Wenger alone, created and formed the Invincibles, not a Graham signing in sight.
BUT Berkgamp was signed, supposedly, by Rioch. I tend to think it was David Dein.
But then you contradict yourself by saying “if it worked” …well of course it worked because we were Invincible!!
You then say he (Wenger) would have used it again if it worked…so tell me where would you have found the likes of that team, been able to get them together at the same time and mould them into the Invincibles?
Wenger tried and failed to do it, along with Fergie and every other premier league manager.
In my view, that was the monkey on Wengers shoulder for ever after. We were priviliged to witness an incredible team and after that, Wenger and the gooner fan base chased the dream again.
Now we will see if anyone else can come anywhere near those wonderful days.and those that witnessed it were priviliged to be part of it.
This is Arsene’s legacy, never forget it.

                1. Ken well said sir! Wenger has still did what no other manager has done. Invincible. His legacy will never be tarnished, never. Look at what the man has done for English football & not just Arsenal.

          2. It changed when Fabregas was the only one left..and every other player left.. that’s when our game started to revolve around Fabregas..and then came the players like..Hleb, Nasri, Rosicky etc..his ideology changed because of Fab.. that’s what I feel..

        2. Keown in the invicibles check yourself although at least he got a medal (by coming on as sub to make the quota just) unlike petit who wasnt even at the club. Couldn’t make it up. Same way people claim Wenger never built a defence. Invincibles were all about defence with Henry carrying the front not that people like to remember that.

      3. You guys are unreal! Guardiola and Zidane at leadt managed Barcelona’s and Real’s reserve teams respectively, what did Arteta do? Being #3 assistant to guardiola for 3 years???? I cant believe how you are even defending him he’s not even a legend at the club and was aweful has last few years. If they want to hire arteta U19 or U21 would be perfect job for him not the first team. The mentality of the fans has been brought to dirt! Why not specially when they were okay with 6+ years of mediocrity under the frenchman.. If Arteta is hired im done with football all together.. Wenger and Arsenal gave me heart and blood pressure problems through out the last years I was even put to hospital once.. if arteta is hired I wouldnt be able to take it any more.. id prefer being healthy for my kids other than suffer physically from a greedy board’s gamble!

        1. @Rashid80, you couldn’t have said it better.. Spot on.. I the word ARTETA.. Say #NoToARTETA. Nough Said.

      4. Such an idiot and clueless about football . Wenger out so it didn’t help as you will get relegated with that snake eyes Arteta . Do you still remember when Moyes joined man united ??? This will happened to Arsenal . Wishing wenger to go sooner or later fake fans will swallow their words . Hiring o experience who sits on the bench never helped . Swansea hired a coach who was an assistant of Ancelotti for aged what happened to him to Swansea ? Answer you clever fake fans ? He got sucked as he wasn’t doing well . Hiring that snake eyes Artteta Arsenal is going to be relegated soon , I see Auba , Lacazette and Ozil leaving the club and there’s a roumer

        1. missed the pro wenger part which make the anti-arteta weird. You just loved wenger because rather than paying attention?

  9. They will appoint mikel arteta as arsenal manager and then give him an experienced assistant coach like faria or buvac.

    1. On what planet do you think faria 17 years by Mourinho leaves to be number 2 at Arsenal under a new manager? Buvac might have fallen out with Klopp which make it at best a maybe and still a pretty big pipedream as no 2, Where do people get these ideas from, a little bit of reading and common sense solves most of the nonsense that gets spouted on these pages.

      1. Word is Buvac is going to manage in Germany i think if memory serves which btw makes sense

  10. I really don’t believe Arteta being the choice, and I certainly don’t hope so:
    No experience as a manager
    Doesn’t exactly show/ooze a winner attitude
I also think it might be a bad idea for him, as the risk of failure seem big.

    1. Arteta has always oozed manager material way more than Henry or Neville for instance. Still unproven mind but hes oozed manager for a long long time. Way before he left us. Always felt that was why we kept him so long for the off-field work. Why he was captain too (everyone complain because stupid.)

      1. Yep……I felt the same too dude……I feel Arsenal has opted to have a group of technical team run the club……..including a young coach………and Arteta fits that mode…….that’s why City wanted him……..and Wenger was upset for arsenal losing Arteta…………

  11. Mikel Arteta and Julian Nagelsmann have emerged as the front-runners for the Arsenal manager’s job, Sky Sports News understands. @skysports.

Anders you better believe it now.

  12. Is the board that stupid enough to take such a risky step to appoint arteta. If we want a young coach its julien nagelsmann. Someone closer to the club but with atleast some experience its Vieira with Henry and Bergkamp as assistant. Arteta was a good player but he isn’t very popular with fans and supposedly with some of the players. Maybe later he could be hired but we aren’t in the best situation right now.

    1. Viera with Henry and Bergkamp as assistants would get this fan base buzzing again like it’s 2004.

They would get more time and more leeway than anyone else that is coming in for a rebuild.

      1. Yes plus you have a strong disciplined kickass coach with vieira, the unlimited knowledge and vision of a football genius like bergkamps and the charismatic coach like henry. even if henry stays at sky which is understandable a vieira/bergkamps duo is like mixing peak wenger/simeone.

        1. Everything wrong with out fans summed up in 3 the 3 above posts. Bergkamp as a staff member is the best suggestion and anyone would know he won’t leave Ajax but you don’t know because your lazy and delusional and just lazy. Cant be bothered to learn even the basics of the sport you follow…. henry lololollololol lolololo lol henry lololololollollol hernyllololololollollolololololololololololololololololllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllloooooooooooollllllllllollolololololololol henry hahahahahahhhahahahahha HENRY! so tired of dumb people

          1. Lol lazy and delusional and just lazy. Cant be bothered to learn to read the entire comment before saying something stupid. I prefer julien nagelsann but since the board wants a young ex players, vieira is already a coach albeit in a weak league, henry has already been a coach for the belgian nat team although i doubt he will quit the money job at sky for us.
As for bergkamps is he your daddy ? since you seems to know his wishes and choices very well. We all know he hates/scared of flying so he can stay behind when we play in europe which is less than 10 games.

          2. Angus, you are very quick to call other people dumb, but you say that Bergkamp won’t leave Ajax! Any real Arsenal fan knows that DB10 is currently unemployed after being SACKED from Ajax at Christmas!

  13. They will appoint arteta because of the name.. Arsene (ar) = Arteta (ar) = Arsenal.. haha

    1. This is what I am about to say after reading everyone’s comment @Yun you are spot on lol it has to be coz of the name…

  14. If Arteta is appointed it’s a tremendous disappointment for me. No experience, and to put him alongside players such as Henry and Viera is infuriating and a sad joke.

If they wanted a young coach versed in ” the Arsenal way” it has to be Viera or Henry. Arteta? Did he spend more time riding the bench or on the pitch?

Arteta appointment would show lack of ambition, no goal of chasing the title, and a monstrous “F#&k You” to the fanbase. Almost as if board is getting back at fans for running off the boards golden goose and his golden eggs of profit.

Damn I hope it’s Jardim or Nagelsmann; I’d happily take either. Then Viera or Henry, and Arteta nowhere close.

  15. Talk about putting every fans high hopes of so called ‘change’ down completely…. Arteta, really the guy from Everton who came to us & didnt really do jack!! That Arteta? One year under Pep & hes the next big thing…. this club is a joke sometimes!!

Get this bloody board & stan out to hell if this goes pear shape & it will as Wenger wouldve been better staying for his last year as Gazidez has bluffed this whole thing to put a structure in place for the ultimate YES man & he isnt even prepared with a replacement.

The fans deserve an ambitious owner, get conman stan out of this happens… teams will be shaken in their boots at Arteta managing over paid pre madonnas that the Arsenel squad is full of. Bloody hell Arteta was a big pansy compared to our real legends in Vieira, Henry, Campbell, Adams… Jesus Tony Adams would be a better appoinment!!

    1. Thierry & Vieira together would put a boot up all the players arses along with the winning mentality & toughness. Now that would be the best gamble to take if we are going with young inexperienced ex players to manage the team and would absolutly unite this messy fanbase as one

  16. To sign Arteta shows how cheap, bonkers and ambitionless Kroenke is.

Personally id be ? ? and ??? if the Board gets Arteta over the likes of Allegri, Ancellotti, Jardim, Simeone, Enrique etc. We should get a Top manager with management experience who has won major trophies especially League and/or Champions League. Id even prefer Benitez

But if it happens then we MUST be respectful to Arteta and give him a chance. That goes for any manager we sign.

I hope whoever we get will be given enough funds and gets at least a top defensive midfielder, 2 top CBs, another quality RB minimum. Ideally a Top box2box and attacking midfielder/winger. I hope he won’t be a Kroenke lackey

  17. Sean,
say it as it is friend, say it as it is.

Gazidis has been well and truly caught with his pants down over this and to publically name his preference has proven a disaster.
My biggest sympathy goes to Arteta though to be honest. He has done nothing wrong, but is being painted as the pantomine villian.
How anyone thought Gazidis was the man is beyond me.

    1. Ken1945
It is actually embarrassing that he is even being considered for the managers post! We need a proven manager, not a novice with not even 1 game as a senior coach. Eddie Howe was a name threw about, id be happier with someone like him to be honest.

Arteta hasnt done anything wrong its just management wise is the problem, though not the worst player we have had but certaintly bot worthy of that spot already?

Rafa is even there if needs be, Ancelloti is free. Better than Arteta.

  18. Now the Independent says Arteta is putting together his backroom staff. I think i’m going to be sick…

  19. I just hope they put us out of our misery soon whoever it is. It’s beginning to look like the cheap option though. If it is Arteta will he be strong enough to deal with the egos? I have my doubts.

  20. From reading the posts it seems a complete lack total support for Arteta to be given the role. I could forgive him if it was as a no2 to an experienced manager but as no 1 no sorry that’s cheap and lacks ambition
Julian Nagglesmen seems to have created a excellent reputation in his short time so I hope he will be the chosen version between the two otherwise I can see empty seats appear if it starts off badly

  21. I can see the likes of Lemar and friends for example skipping on Klopp for in our favor just bec we are going to have Arteta around. And i am also sure that Arteta can bring the best out of some of our under performers like Mustafi and Iwobi. And due of his experience i also think that the youngsters can learn much under him due his career as an excellent middle field player. Geniuuuus. This is a geniuuuuus move. Absolute legend.

  22. Wenger’s legacy is over and the glory days of Arsenal are over.
Arsenal will take the cheapest option possible.
Don’t think there will be a massive revival of fortunes and Arsenal challenging for the big honours because its not Arsenal’s priority.
A tidy profit and Arsenal becoming a mid table team.
This time next year we will be protesting for Wenger to come back.
Arteta – really, how on earth can anyone with a brain cell honestly believe he can change our fortunes?
Not useless because he is a very good coach but entirely unsuitable…
Assuming of course we want him…

  23. If the Arsenal Board appoint Mikel Arteta as Manager it just rubber stamps their lack of Ambition.
Mikel Arteta as Manager is the Cheap option and this makes me wonder was Mr Wenger protection a Cheap skeet Board for the last few years by taking the blame for the lack of Top quality players coming to Arsenal.

  24. What i don’t understand why we think ex Arsenal players will make good managers.Other than George Graham I can’t think of anybody else.Being a great player certainly doesn’t make you a great manager.Lets get someone in with a good track record. If there is little or no transfer budget on offer, and that seems to be the stumbling block how about Rafa

    1. eh… simeone ex atletico legend, quite the irony to question the quality of ex-player/coach which is true while choosing simeone as alternative. just grab julien nagelsann younger than arteta and much more experience. if nagelsann wants to stay at hoffenheim 1 more season, we hire ancelotti aka the best stop-gap ever.

  25. What an anti climax this has turned into….. we’re a huge club & look at who is in the running ☹☹☹☹☹☹☹

  26. The fact that Gazidis and con man stan even considering Arteta is sickening. Get Stan and toadie Gazidis out now! OUT OUT OUT!

Fans in London and England, please keep up protests, get rid of Ivan and Stan the bums!

Banner gave me hope, “Kronke you’re next!”

Please help us fans outside England make that come true.

    1. 100% Agreed. The banner was good but flown at the wrong time as respect shouldve been shown as it was Wengers last ever Arsenal game…

Usmanov should be taking the reigns at Arsenal &, the fans can make that happen. He wants the club, he wants to win by spending our own money that the club generates itself each season. We wont change, we dont need a sugar daddy we need an owner who wants to win. Just takes the right brain to be sparked to make an impact on getting this conyank out of our once great club.

      1. I’m not saying Kroenke is right for Arsenal far form it, but I’m not sure Usmanov is the answer either. We only have his word that he’d put money into the club, and how long he’s actually supported the club.

What we do know is, he’s been trying to get the club to pay dividends to shareholders, what percentage this would be set at nobody knows, so if he bought Kroenke out, he would make a rather tasty profit from his dividend payment.

    2. Durand old friend,
It’s easy to be wise after the event, but I did discuss with you in great detail the role of the board and owner in the demise of our club, especially with regards to transfer policies.
They have hoodwinked everyone into thinking Wenger was the devil incarnate, but now he has gone and their protection cover has been completely wiped out.
It gives me no pleasure in reminding you, as I see our great club wallowing in the s**t of these men.
Do you think those protest were aimed at the wrong man now Durand, or at least not the only guilty party?

      1. My friend Ken

You make some good points and offer plenty to consider, so I’ll try and answer and be honest.

As for their role in demise of our club, no argument from me Ken. However, I would place ORIGINAL blame on greedy self-indulged board who sold their shares to Kronke knowing who he was, and direction he wanted to go! They are the original villains in my book!

As for transfer policies, we never debated or disagreed about available transfer funds. I read Friar’s statement about funds, and also that dope sir chips a while back about anyone but messi or ronaldo. Honestly I don’t know the truth, who does, how much available, etc… Only thing I know is Wenger saying in November 27 2017 Ivan doesn’t buy players. I believe that because his sly dig at Sven about Mavropanos, and complete 180 after seeing him in training (1st Wenger said loan him, then few days later said no way he’s staying).
Secondly, Wenger was out of the Aubamayang deal, basically Sven and Ivan; Ivan carried the wallet and signed the check.

I would agree about Wenger giving cover to owner and board, no disagreement here; vast majority of managers do the same, job description.

What gets me is did Wenger ever stand up to the owner or board? I mean legendary manager, changed our club and English football forever. Why not fight for money, demand better, stick your neck out for it?

Maybe he did, or maybe Friar was right; he told Wenger here’s the funds available, make due, and Wenger said “OK.”

Lastly aimed at right people? I will answer “yes” and “no.”

“No” Wenger selected players, didn’t bench underperformers, and bet his job on players that got him sacked. Loyalty from him got them overpaid by millions; his loyalty to them got him fired.

“Yes” because Wenger doesn’t decide transfer kitty, not his fault owner isn’t involved to win trophies (famous con man stan line), and Owner and CEO are not Arsenal lovers like the fans.

In fact, Stan’s “love” of “football” is centered around 3 letters; NFL. That’s the football he knows.

Basically Ken, I agree with you on principle, but maybe disagree on aspects that got us here.

Sorry for the “article” hope you could finish and would like to know your thoughts.

Jon Fox, Phil, John0711, and Arsene is Out as well if I’m being honest.

        1. Durand, I agree with a lot of what you’re saying.
We might nt have had City type money but whatever money we had, was misspent on the wrong players. We could have bought Kante instead of Xhaka for example.
Pochettino made Spurs competitive and brought them above us with 50M net spend since 2014.
I think under the right manager, we would have been much more successful in the last 5 years with the same budget and the same board.
We would have at least beaten Leicester to the PL.

          1. Arsene is Out

Very true about misspent money. I’d add not selling Sanchez to City for £60 million in hindsight as well. Not like it would have made a difference to City; they danced the whole way.

Too bad Sven and Raul weren’t around to add more players than Chec that transfer year. Or the Xhaka transfer; sure Sven could have done better. I’d add Mustafi to the list also.

Sven and Raul could have done much better with £70 million than Xhaka and Mustafi; I’d wager on that. Ironically, if they took away Wenger’s power 2 years ago, Arsene could very well still be our manager.

How’s that to get ya thinking?

        2. Durand,
A really good reply, giving me plenty to think about as well!!!

Point One: Selling the shares to Kroenke:
100% agree with you. was it Lady Bracewell Smith (sorry if I got the name wrong) sold her shares to Kroenke and then wished she hadn’t. The reason was not because she thought she had made a mistake, but because she should have made more money!!!! Not one thought about A.F.C.

Secondly transfer funds: Sorry, but I was referring to our discussion on the Griezman affair. What I was getting at was the fact that wenger had said he wanted the player, but someone vetoed the deal. We debated over that being seen as Wenger lying to the fans. i believe that at that time, Ivan did not buy the players, but someone most certainly had the power to scupper Wengers wishes.
He has bought some spectacular players and also some of the worst to ever wear the colours and I guess every manager has that kind of story to tell. The way the club has dealt with transfers and contracts is awful and I believe all three parties (owner, board and manager) should bear the shared responsibilty, but Wenger must take the ownership of signings once completed. I believe he has never shirked that situation, but must regret some of them.

My take on Mavro is a little different. I believe Arsene was aware of how bad the injury Kos had been dealing with, saw the potential of mavro and decided to keep him.
Auba deal: That’s how I see it as well, the start of the screw turning by Gazidis on Wenger.

Next point: Why did he never stand up to the board? This is one I find very difficult to defend, especially as I see Wenger as a highly principled and honest man. I can only assume that he believed he could do the work required under whatever budget…a decision that eventually caused his downfall.

Next point:Wenger selected underperforming players: I have always believed that Arsene was let down by the players and their inconsistent performances. I well remember the team performance against Forest, it was terrible. Yet, the next game against Chelsea saw the same players give a fantastic back to the wall display. Why? Not the coaching was it? Individual errors by internationally acclaimed players repeated time and time again (Mustafi is the main culprit) but allowed to get away with it.
In my opinion, Wenger knew the players capabilities and kept selecting them for that reason, believing it wouldn’t/couldn’t happen again. In hindsight another grave mistake by the man who believed too much in his players.

Finally our owner. You know more about the man than I do.
How anyone could buy a club of our stature and not believe in it, follow it and support it by attending matches I just do not understand. I guess he sees the club as a cash cow, will bleed it for all its worth and then sell it on.
In my summing up, there is so much more to unravel, regarding all aspects of the club and I firmly believe Arsene was stabbed in the back, but must take responsibility for letting that opportunity happen.
in years to come and with Arsene’s promised autobiography, we will have a clearer view, but I will always admire the obstinate, stubborn but truly fantastic Arsenal legend.
This current season has been awful and the inevitable took place and now we move on. Too what remains to be seen, here’s to success.
Durand, hope you were able to stay awake, hope the others give their take on it as well. We do have such a brilliant and diverse platform of opinions.
Discuss again once………..has been appointed manager/coach!

          1. well said….but I do agree Wenger is soft at certain players….

but if you are a manager and running on a budget…..it will be kind of tough…

do you drop or sell a talented player or play him and let him perform?

you sell a player and if the board doesn’t back you with another….what can a manager do?

Additionally signing another player does not mean he will fit into the team immediately….there are a lot of issues such as weather, food, family, accommodation, etc….

A manager can only rely on scouts’ information and recommendation to sign players….

Wenger wants a striker, the board gave him perez….cause he fit the budget

Wenger wants a CB in Jan….the board can only give him Evans….because hes the only experience CB available in Jan and fits the budget….

The question why Sanchez is not sold earlier? maybe its Wenger or maybe its the board/Gazadis?

Would a manager sell a player that you will know will guarantee you 15 goals and maybe 10 assists? a player that has already settled into the team?

Wenger wanted Lemar prior but Gazadis and his team could not close the deal earlier…..

so should Wenger sell an experience player and have no replacement….play another inexperience player and take a gamble?

          2. Ken

Excellent reply! I believe we have similar take on much dealing with Wenger and what may have really happened. The book should prove quite the read!

            1. Thank you gentlemen for the well thought out and well presented discussion above.
Arsene Wenger built an enormous bank of credibility and good will in his early years due to the success of Arsenal.
My issue with Arsene Wenger is that he didn’t use this bank to be more assertive with the board. Unfortunately Wenger played the role of the loyal employee and ran interference for the board. With his departure the spotlight now falls on the board and the banner at Huddersfield is a warning to the board of fan’s expectations for them to show leadership and competence.
This is not to reduce the concern with the drop in Wenger’s decision making ability regarding transfers, team selection and tactics post David Dein.

            2. Durand,

              I agree with that.
It’s funny how the fanbase has now become more objective and seem to be offering more intelligent thoughts (me included) rather than the never ending personal retoric over Arsene.
Sure we will discuss the new manager, whoever it will be!!!

  27. It seems that nobody is aware of how highly Arteta is regarded as a coach. He is responsible for a lot of the improvements to playing personnel at City. He is already touted as one of the top coaches in Europe. Granted he is not a manager, however it may be that with others brought in to deal with scouting and acquisitions the idea is for him to concentrate solely on coaching ect.
We have to accept that to compete with financial doping we may need to think outside of a Angelotti plus £200m. As demonstrated by Chelski and Utd you just get trumped by City anyway.
Having put up with years of decline in general, I think we could afford to give Arteta a chance?

    1. Why Arteta? Naglismann is the one who should be considered! He has experience and even younger than arteta. And he fits with our german speaking core.. I can’t believe some people are actually supporting the appoinment of Arteta.. SMH

    2. Please give us some references as to where you are getting your Arteta information?
“Touted as one of the top Coaches” who is touting him? Where?
“responsible for improvements at City” again who is saying this? where are the articles?

I have not once read any of this, but would be happy to if you sent us links.

      1. Sorry I operate a little more old school and listen to the wireless where the comments were made.
Believe it, don’t believe it I couldn’t give a toss.
But the fact that Arteta is a coach at a club which can and does endeavour to have the very best they possibly can, that he is part of the team which Gurdiola is head coach/manager and that the side he is involved in has improved individual players, leads me to believe he may be pretty decent.
But what do I know, I am just partial to unsubstantiated claims with no real knowledge of the game.

        1. All I asked are references I did not say you were unknowledgeable or your claims were unsubstantiated. But if that’s the way you feel…

Also two important points about what you just wrote.

          1) Arteta is at a club with endless resources. And as per Pep’s claim to play the type of football that they do they need to have the right players and spend big.

          2) Arteta’s title at Manchester City is……. wait for it……….

Assistant Coach yes not Assistant Manager not even Coach but Assistant Coach. I went to the City website to check and there it was. Assistant Coach.
A man with 2 years of assistant coach experience given the key to the to the 6th richest football club in the world.

        2. What u just said was I have no evidence and it’s my opinion so ner ner na ner lmfao what utter ???????????

    3. @malonee31

This is a reasonable thought it when someone can think for himself and not follow the majority and their opinion

Having said that, Arteta does not fill me confidence at all. he has never even had any backroom staff , inexperience seems like an understatement
But what can we really do? Another protest?
Arsenal is creating a completely new era and i just hope it turns out glorious and successful

  28. Off topic. Anyone ever seen a goalie getting booked for moving off the line in a penalty shootout? U17 Euro qf tonight, Irish goalie sent off after saving the last penalty

  29. The fact that Arteta isn’t a legend in terms of playing for Arsenal doesn’t bother me. Tony Adams was a legend as a player but a rubbish coach, and the same applies to lots of other top-players at other clubs. It also doesn’t bother me too much that Arteta is inexperienced, because lots of experienced managers fail, and somebody fresh & knowledgeable has the potential to start a new chapter in tactics and management and build something great if they have the ability.

What does bother me is that Arteta never struck me as having the cutting-edge and ruthlessness that seems necessary in modern football, and that’s what Arsenal have really lacked under Wenger for the last decade. I struggle to see Arteta getting rid of the “Soft-in-the-middle” problem that we’ve had for a long time, and that would be a total disaster for the team. We desperately need an injection of energy, quality, and fight – Not mushiness and sentimentality.

    1. You are more than spot on mate!

Ramsey was playing beside him some years ago,
Can he really stamp his authority on him for example? What about Ozil? And others…

If we want a young manager then go for Nagglesmann, have been reading about him and he is such a wonder!

But if we end up with Arteta, we just have to hope it works!

  30. If the club have decided we are not going for an Ancelotti, and can’t seem to convince Allegri or Luis Enrique – Jardim should be our #1 choice.

If the board still insist on going for a manager in his 30s – Nagelsmann and Tedesco are miles ahead of Arteta.

  31. We should go for Enrique or the present Napoli Manager. Our target should be to win the EPL next season. Sign a Very Mobile DM. Discard the Wenger way. Play an aggressive and very effective counter attacking football. Improve the fitness level of the players.

  32. Whoever the new manager is…I hope they look. At Shaqiri….class player with Stoke now relegated. Good opportunity to get him

  33. How about a Petr Cech? Has experience, have won the champions league, Europa cup, and EPL with Chelsea? How about promoting him instead of arse-ta

  34. We might see some movement probably end of this week we will know who the manager/coach is since they got rid of entire wenger’s backroom staff except Bould and Lehman those are sign of movements.

  35. If Arsenal are considering hiring outside the normality of the tried and tested i.e. Allegro, ancelotti etc. I would look no further than Marco Rose and Rene Maric double act. There tactical awareness have propelled RB Salzburg to unexpected heights. Understanding the opposition and specifically playing to exploit there weaknesses with limited resources has been revolutionary.

  36. Well, let’s not forget that Arteta was Captain in his playing day’s at Arsenal. His leadership was sooo good, that he remained Captain even when he was out injured for most of the last two seasons at the club.
I guess the same can be said about BFG! Another non existent Captain on the pitch! ??

  37. You all dreaming , another 22 years without a trophy , Wenger managed to win 4 trophies in 5 seasons after signing ozil now he bought two forwards where he planned to win to but foolish fans boycot games and make his life miserable , Arteta the Moyes has been Hired check the news ??

    1. true to that……

This season has been plagued with contract issues and inconsistencies with Cech and Mustafic…

I would actually like to see Wenger wining with Aubameyang in the team….

Auba guarantee goals…..just like Kane and Sallah…a better forward that Lukakau

what we need this coming new season is a gk, DM and CB…..

The new manager is having it easy with Auba….an emerging Mvaraponos as CB…….

any signings have to depend on the board and how much funds are granted

  38. Our fanbase is a joke and doesn’t deserve Arteta end of story. Let him stay at city win another title get praised by pep all year and go to Everton and be part of them overtaking us (after we took them under wenger.) Nothing less than most our fanbase deserves. Jokes most of you, embarrassing you are. You’d rather Henry lol how clueless…………

  39. Seriously, Arteta’s appointment itself is a serious risk. We might have resistance in the dressing room itself. I do not think it’s a risk worth taking.

Outsiders may go on and on about Arteta but we may need to ask why our players dislike him. There is no smoke without fire. And it’s not one or two players for sure.

    1. pretty sure Gazadis, Mislintat and Raul know that….

They already got rid of the entire staff apart from Bould and Lehmann…

Welbeck and Ramsay may be sold as well….Wilshere potentially leaving….the rest are new or juniors….

with old guards gone….theres nothing to stop Arteta

      1. Clearing the staff is a good thing. Players developed by having different coaches input on how to improve their game. There is so much only 1 man can teach a player and the likes of ramsey, wilshere, bellerin, iwobi have only known wenger and his staff for much of their career. Plus some were getting old and some were clearly outdated and contributed to our downfall. Loyalty has been wenger downfall as loyalty to players and to his outdated staff got him sacked.

    1. Good question? Does anyone have the list of who has been interviewed or is it top secret?

  40. First, Arteta has zero experience, but I’m more concerned because of his personality. Arteta is not a winner and he doesn’t have the win or die attitude. Granted, a lot of successful coaches were no great footballers but that could be down to ability rather than desire. Never really saw him lose it,get mad or with the “I want it badly attitude” as a footballer . Also,he wasn’t particularly known for his passion or desire.
My personal opinion is,to motivate,inspire,mete-out the “hair dryer” treatment, instill the badly needed discipline and steel into those soft multi millionaire prima donnas at arsenal,we need a big character and Arteta is just not it. Patrick Viera would have been a far better choice
