Jackson Martinez refuses to rule out Arsenal move

The Porto striker Jackson Martinez was reportedly ‘a few days’ from joining AC Milan last week, but now it seems he has not yet decided which team he will be playing for next season, with Arsenal being strongly linked since last summer.

The Colombian striker is currently at the Copa America, but in an interview he has made it clear that he has no idea even which country he will be going to, but does admit to a great admiration for Arsenal and the Premier League.

He was quoted as saying in the Star: “I’ve always had two players I’ve admired above all others: (Luis) Ronaldo and (Thierry) Henry. So I’m very happy he made that comment about me.

“Arsenal are a great team, playing in one of the best leagues in the world.

“I’m still waiting to see what the future holds. It’s not known yet but it will be known soon.

“For now I’m fully focused in the Copa America.

“Every player’s dream is to play where they can feel well and enjoy football, and that’s my dream too.

“Whether it’s in England, Italy or Spain, the most important thing is that my family and I both feel well and I can enjoy my football.”

To me, it is promising that he refuses to name the club, as we all know how secretive Arsene Wenger is about his targets discussing any talks in advance of signing the contract, but the fact is that there is no real indication that Arsenal are one of the suitors, other than the normal rumour mill.

I seriously like the idea of Martinez coming to the Emirates, but I’m not holding my breath!

  1. He’s good, but Giroud should leave if he is coming. But I’d go for someone much better and younger.

      1. and that man must be Twice the Mr hold-up play we have……..is a 29/30yrs oLd martinez that man? (boy! I used to like that guy a few seasons ago, but how did we leave ut so late to want him?)

    1. Apparently Benzema is to be sold if Real Madrid buys Agüero. Benzema >>>>>>>>> Martinez.

Only question is what will happen to Giroud then? Wenger does not like (according to himself a year or two ago) to have players competing for the same role on both club and national team level.

      1. Wengers ONLY concern should be the Arsenal Squad NOT what goes on with the national side its got nowt to do with him at present. Martinez appears to be working both end to the middle with both us and Milan Im not sure I like that really.

    2. what i have seen in copa america that guy would be like to like replacement of giroud. His finishing was so poor he had sony many chances to score against venezuela.Even his hold up play is not even close to top class.i would bring in griezmann as RW and stick with this same front line ,if no other strikers are available.

    3. Martinez is the answer to our center forward position, he will make healthy competition for giroud. I hope Wenger is targeting a striker after all. And Martinez seems like a good fit, he comes at a good price and is a proven goal scorer

  2. in your own opinion fellow gooners….given the kind of midfield we have.thumb up if you feel jackson can score more than 20 EPL goals a season. thumb down if you feel he would score less than 20.

  3. It’ll be good if JM comes to Arsenal.
I’m not holding my breath over this also.
It’s also nice to know we are getting closer to signing Cech (the most reliable rumour in the mill).

        1. I wasn’t very impressed he made a couple tackles but he just trudged around and looked sluggish

  4. why sell OG like Santi Cazorla said we needed another striker when OG was injured then DW so we need all our strikers but most of all we need a KILLER striker a striker that puts fear to every defender

    1. we dont need to sell giroud, he would be a very good back up.. sell podolski and sonogo instead.. keep players who can make an impact if the top hitman is having a bad day

  5. FFS, GIROUD IS CRAP. Plain crap for Arsenal. Not good enough for Arsenal. He should be playing for clubs like West Ham

    1. @ Kickass fan
I want a new striker tooo. But that is going to far. Giroud has done enough to show that he deserve to wear the shirt. For someone we bought for £10m I think he has paid every penny of his transfer fee. A lil respect here sir. Calling him crap I think is going to far.

      1. Not Crap at all but hideously inconsistent and to my mind he lacks nothing but that X factor perhaps the killer instinct or tht unfathomable “class” that all W/C strikers have I cant define it but whatever it is OG is just slightly lacking in it. shame really cos I like the player but he just does not inspire fear

        1. Ozzy AFC
He just lacks agretion and that will come in a year or two but will he have the time up front to develop that part of his game? No not for arsenal we just don’t have any more time or patients left with experiments, he might have to go elsewhere for that

  6. Boys it seems to be happening with Petr Cech. Swansea just confirmed that Arsenal goal keeping coach Robert will be joining Swansea. Why the rumours are that Petr Cech will join Arsenal wilth Goal keeping coach Christophe Lollichon from Chelsea. Chelsea fans are groing nuts on their forum. hahahahahahahah. After cashly left us for Chelsea this will be a good pay back . lol

Between I hope jackson makes his announcement quickly. Am tired of the suspense . If is Arsenal or Milan or United he should do it fast.

  7. If we sign another
    goal scorer some
    have to be off loaded
    We all ready have
    Giroud Wellbeck Walcott Chamberlain
    Sanchez Sanogo Ramsey Campbell Akpom.
We also have attacking players like
Ozil Cazorla Wilshere Rosicky Gnabry + Zelalem
and attacking wing backs Bellerin Gibbs + Debuchy
18 attack focused players. If we can’t score 80 EPL goals
there is something wrong with the system.

  8. A little off topic…. but do you guys agree with Falcao, Gutierrez, and Bacca all being first choice in front of Jackson Martinez to this point in the Copa America?

  9. Martinez, Giroud and Welbeck may not = Costa, Remy and Falcao, but that doesn’t matter as such because all we need are goalscorers who can win us matches

We also have Alexis, Walcott and Oxlade.

I think Akpom, Gnabry should go on loan
Podolski, Campbell and Sanogo should be sold

If we can’t get Martinez, then we should go for Lacazetter, Benzema or Cavani

    1. Costa can’t be that much better than this guy, is he?
Costa basically had one excellent season in a “not-so-tough-as-the-EPL” league before he made the move to the “tough-as-hell” EPL. And yet no one can comfortably argue that he wasn’t a big hit in his debut season!
This guy Martinez has had three excellent seasons in Portugal and -to a reasonable extent- Europe! Why do we doubt his ability to thrive in England? Sure age isn’t on his side, but he is still got atleast 2-3 years left in him to share the load with Giroud. That is the point -in those 2/3 years Welbeck and Akpom should be ready to take over fulltime.

  10. I think JM is a really good striker but like everyone else says, how many more years has he got in him! I’d like to go for a proven striker who is between 22-26 years old but finding someone like that would be ridiculously hard and very expensive!

Campbell and Podolski are pretty much gone so i think Wenger will defiantly be buying a striker.

Also does anyone else feel like we dont get enough for players we sell… podolski is rumored to leave for 1.9million!!! surly we could still get 5million for him??

  11. Higuain Cavani or Lewendowski would be my ideal choice. Signing them could prove difficult however.

I dont go for this age thing as im not the one looking to get value for money nor am i thinking five or more years ahead. If we can get someone doing the business over the next two to three years ill be happy and if we win more silverware thanks in part to this players business well then i am delighted.

  12. Jackson has a really good goals per appearances stats

Here are stats of some of the finest CF in the World
    Name….Lg App…Lg Gls..Total App..Total Gls
    ——————————————-
    Martinez…29……….21……..42…………..32
    Benteke….28……….13………32………….15
    Benzema..29……….15………46………….22
    Bendtner..16………..1………19…………….3
    Higuain….37………..18……..56…………..29
    Sanogo….10…………0………11…………….1
    Lacazette.31………..27……..38…………..31
    Ibrah’vic…24………..19……..35…………..30

    1. Minutes are a far better indicator and excluding penalties is also more accurate:

      Name—–goals—-penalties——minutes——-goals/minute(no penalties)
      Walcott—–5———–0————448———89.6
      Costa——-20———1————2068———108.8
      Martinez—-20———-1———–2546———-134
      Giroud——14———-1———–1861——–143.2
      Lacazette—27———-8———-2842———149.6
      Benzema—15———-0————2293——–152.9
      Ibra———19———-8———-2003——–182.1
      Higuain——18———3————2777——-185
      Benteke—-13———-1———–2379———198.3

Giroud has done better than most “available strikers” and in a harder league in terms of goals. Martinez is the only one with a better record and he plays in a league where 14/18 of the teams are worth less than 1/6 what Porto is valued at.

I wonder what excuses people will make now. Having said this, another striking option would be welcome but I can’t really say how necessary when we have plenty of midfielders chipping in with goals as well.

      1. Here’s Cavani and Falcao for shits and giggles

        Name—–goals—-penalties——minutes——-goals/minute(no penalties)
        Cavani——18———3———–2611——–174.1
        Falcao——4———–0———–1288———322

      2. Walcott is the best striker in the world. Give him the number 9 jersey for an entire season and see!

          1. Nahh I gotta disagree with that he again is missing some key factor that I cant put my finger on he’s just a millimetres short but it may as well be a mile.
I cant see him being all he promised I just cant. I think he’s not lethal anough and that’s the X factor in all strikers and to my mind Walcott don’t have it.
Not saying he not a good striker but he’s not that world class guy that we so desperately need

      3. Thanks for that. Posts like that are why I continue to read this site despite the recent trend towards clickbait and garbage articles based on made up Metro rumors.

  13. Giroud scored 19 goals this season. Can’t tell how many he missed or missed to take opportunity from the key passes made by our excellent midfield’s. Striker like giroud scored 19 goals, so v just have to buy a slightly better striker..yeah slightly. Its enough, I would expect 30-35 goals easily. He just have to convert key passes to a goal.

    1. I got slated really badly by a couple of guys on here last week for saying that very thing in fact I said that if Walcott wants 150K a week then he should score 25 to 30 goals a season and then ask for the raise in wages. cant remember who it was who berated me but it wasn’t a good look lol

    2. Come on then, tell us all who this magical 30-35 goal per season striker is, that’s available and affordable.

      I’m waiting with baited breath!

  14. City are not going to sell Aguerro. There is no available replacement anywhere close to his talent and City would not be title contenders without Aguerro.

  15. Jackson Martinez is still available for one reason. Milan have not agreed to pay his buyout clause. The fascination with Martinez is a mystery. Would Carlos Bacca, a better player who starts ahead of JM for Colombia generate the same excitement? No, he would be deemed not good enough.

  16. Sometimes, people piss me off with their rubbish really. Do u really think costa is 26yrs old? Do think he nd ozil nd walcott are d same age? Looking at their face alone shows u costa is even older than martinez. Stop dis rubbish of defining players based on age,u should define yhem by their ability. Pls note this
