Joel Campbell to return to Arsenal – but for how long?

Campbell will return to Arsenal, but he doesn’t seem too excited!

Joel Campbell has become a forgotten man under Arsene Wenger, despite the player offering quite a bit of promise during his time on the pitch.

The Costa Rican international was shipped out on loan to Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon during the summer, after Wenger deemed him surplus to requirements this season. Having entered the final few months of the current campaign, Campbell, as well as other players who are out on loan, will all be thinking about what their future holds for next season.

For Campbell, he’s made a statement of what will happen, but I think he seems less than impressed about the decision being made. Campbell said in a recent interview: ‘There is no purchase option. I have to fulfill my loan to Sporting in the best way and then return to Arsenal.’

Campbell therefore knows that without a permanent option in his current loan agreement, that a move to Sporting may be unlikely. It means a move back to North London is definitely on the cards, even if just for a moment. However he doesn’t seem to excited about a return to Arsenal.

I personally think that the 24 year old is a player with a lot of promise. He’s had a tough time at the club under Arsene Wenger, having found his opportunities limited. However he had a strong 2014/15 season with the Gunners and Wenger was called to play him more by the fans!

I reckon Campbell’s Arsenal career is unfortunately over and he’s likely to be shipped out on loan again or sold in the summer. With the right nurturing, a club will be getting a decent player added to their ranks and he could be one of those players that comes back to bite Arsenal in the future, as one that got away.

  1. I like him but he’s nothing more than a squad player tbh!!! We need to be ruthless! Cutthroat! We need to remember that we’re a big team and start acting like it and get in some killers in the team. Top players that are hungry for success. That’s what’s missing from our team: hunger, passion, killer instinct
