Lucas Torreira – Arsenal’s new midfield Terrier (plus video)

Everyone seems pretty sure that Arsenal are set to complete the signings of Lucas Torreira and Bernd Leno imminently. The Evening Standard reported last night….

Arsenal are confident of securing the signings of Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira and Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

The duo are expected to cost the Gunners a combined £46million, with Sampdoria receiving £26m for Uruguayan international Torreira and Leno setting the Gunners back a further £20m.

So this would be a good time to look at some of his skills, tackling, tenacity and goals ahead of the announcement….

Enjoy!

  1. Torreira would be an excellent signing given our past history of neglecting that gapping hole of defensive midfield in our team. He’s a bit small but so is Kante who seems to do an excellent job for Chelsea. Leno, however, is no better than Cech. Next summer we will be back here again crying for a goalkeeper. It seems our £50M budget was true afterall so let’s just focus on getting back into the champions league and increasing our spending power. Hopefully we shall achieve this goal then at least try for the premier league trophy in the near future.

    1. Are we getting a gk and a dm or am i dreaming? So we actually mean business this summer, going for targets that will fix holes in our team. GO ivan & raul & sven brain trust… RIP arsene dictatorship.

About our 50m budget i think if it is true that it concerns the amount of money we will give to clubs this summer. Most transfers are paid in instalments so 50m may equate to 100m spending or more like if you think city really paid 200m in one transfer window then they would be bankrupt.
This is the reason no one complained about FFP about city spending compared to psg as psg paid neymar release clause fully in one go. It was a big FU to FFP since no club not even man u or real can spend 200m in one transfer window. Torreira has a release clause but we are paying a little more than it so we can pay in multiple payment. Barca paid us for years in instalments for vermalean transfer and it was a small sum.

      1. GK – Leno incoming
        CB – sokratis incoming
CB – soyuncu if he comes then 1 or 2 CB are sold
        backup RB – lichtsteiner done
        DM – torreira incoming

That all defensive signings and that exact same list of position was required last summer and our previous manager did nothing. We would perhaps be in the champions league right now with the current squad + this positions fixed.

i see people asking for wingers which we don’t have in the squad but will we play with wingers this season.

    2. Bernd Leno is far much better than Cech, unless you’re talking about the Cech of old, maybe. Go watch Leno’s saves on Youtube and then come back and say this again. Cech has been a liability to Arsenal for at least two seasons now.

  2. The goalkeeper we are expecting to sign is useless and no better then what we have he makes far to many errors and will cost us a lot of points 3rd choice German keeper not included in world cup squad think that tells you everything you need to know!!!

    1. No it doesn’t tell you anything , his statistics will , complete videos of his previous games at Bayer and their analysis will. Your negativity is not helping anyone.

    1. How come a team like WH is preparing to spend more money than us? Is it a spending contest or do you spend according to your needs? I’d hate to put you in charge of any budget if you’re just to look at what others are spending to determine your own spend.

  3. Wtf is wrong with some of us gunners? Leno’s not in yet but you keep pointing he’s error prone have you seen Allison without errors? God give it a break Liverpool was in hot pursuit as well and if they had goten him u’d have said our transfer team is useless coz Liverpool got him.get a grip & support your team or try the smelly Neighbor. As for our transfer, love what’s going on & I hope we sell chambers keep holding & buy caglar.with torreira,Leno, sokratis & litchy I can only fantasize we bring in gelson martins and then I can completely sit back and enjoy my best season run in over 15 years even though we might not win d league.

    1. Totally agree with most things said auba.

So far from the WC games played if Arsenal was getting Degea / Neur / Kroos / Neymar or Messi some fans would still complain about their ability. There is no pleasing Arsenal fans.

We are a Europa team for Christ sake do we actually think we can attract the biggest players or do we have the financial muscle and appear? Every player makes an error but if the quality is there they can be coached to do better.

Lets not get on a players back before they even come in. Its a totally different case bashing want we have because its been proven & tested (Mustaphi) & bashing what we are yet to test.
I believe Raul, Sven, & Unai have better player knowledge than most of us here.

      1. The idea of moving to a new stadium was to make us one of the biggest clubs in the world and attract and pay for world class players and this has and will never happen whether it was Wenger or the board not financially backing him as they promised it dosnt matter arsenal are finished as a big club will never challenge for prem league and will struggle to make top 6 never mind top 4 the club is a complete shambles from top to bottom!!

        1. Does every idea becomes reality. You can’t keep complaining about something if you don’t have the resources to change it. This act of complaining about players we are yet to have is frivolous.

    2. I would love to “try the smelly neighbour.” I would try them (as in court) for crimes against North London and football in general. Then, once I FOUND THEM GUILTY ,since I would be judge, jury and executioner all combined, they would be taken from this place and banished from the Premiership, ever afterwards to languish in the lower reaches of League Two, til their fans desert them and come over to the good side and support us instead. Being serious for a moment (as serious is not something I can keep up for long) I agree with you that so many Gooners are already embarrassing themselves by writing off players we have not even finalised transfers for as yet. Leno has played 6 times for Germany , which is more than Pickford has for England, yet I do not hear many fans dissing him in the same depressing way as they do with Leno. Chill out , those pessimistic Gooners and “always look on the bright side of life,” or they can always “try the smelly neighbouir” as you suggest.

  4. fans are happy that there are multiple signings…..even if its 34yo or 40 yo they are happy money is being spent

    1. Get your information correctly, it is free since is 34 yrs or 40 yrs but with the world cup performance that I have seen guy, I can say the situation is better than your bellerin.

      1. Can we clarify this?

Bellerin had no competition last season and so was lacking in several games.

Lichsteiner has been brought in to challenge Bellerin for RB – it’ll make him work harder and improve his game. Lich will also provide rotational cover in a heavily congested fixture list, as well as experience and leadership in the dressing room.

Bellerin will still remain first-choice (unless his from drops below par). This is a great tactical signing.

        1. Well said.
Also, a lot of moans about Bellerin was issues that came around due to poor coaching, our whole team wasn’t coached on how to defend.

How is it fair to slate Bellerin for Wengers inability to train defenders for multiple years now?

Why not support the lad and see if Emery can coach him on his positioning and how to defend… He is only 23! Not even close to his prime and some so called fans want to throw him under the 1st bus they see :'(

  5. I’m happy because we have a plan, we look like we are trying to address the problems in the team with good solid players, or would you rather wait all transfer window and bye 1 marquee signing and hope that will appease the fans whilst neglecting our problem areas.

  6. Well after watching the video, Torreira would most certainly be a welcome addition to plug the hole we have in DM. I know videos can be misleading but i like his tenacity and work rate he puts in and he’s also tricky on the ball and can pass.

    1. Also I meant to post about Torreira!

He looks fantastic. As you say, very tenacious. Has great positional awareness which makes up for his lack in size. He’s technical and also gets involved effectively in attack.

He reminds me of what was expected of Jack Wilshere, with defensive capabilities. If we allow Torreira to express himself as he’s been able to with his former clubs, this might be the signing of the Summer.

  7. Torreira looks like what we need, we have needed someone who will snap at the ankles of the opposition and to pinch the ball back, someone who will give the def confidence as well.

He appears to have the work rate of Elneny while being a better footballer.

I could see Emery using a CM trio of Torreira, Xhaka and Rambo.

Elneny as Torreira backup, AMN as Xhaka backup and Rambo advanced playmaker role can be covered by both Mkhi and Ozil, might mean one of those is sold and I doubt Sven would recommend Mkhi being the one to go…

What does it mean to Ozil that Xhaka signed a new deal and Rambo is going to be a key player for Emery? Mkhi is a new signing and done very well since joining, I can’t see us keeping all 3 players for 1 ACM role (or dropped deeper as a 3rd CM).

We all know the CM is kinda packed with players and of attack mind as well, this is one of the reasons why I dream of us doing a straight swap for Martial for Ozil. Martial and Mkhi know each other. Martial can play as an inside forward on the left while Auba has proven at BvB and prior to then that he can bang goals in from the right and Laca is a proven CF…

    Leno
    Bellerin-Sokratis-Mavrop-Monreal
    Torreira
    Rambo-Xhaka
    Auba-Laca-Martial

    Cech
    Lich-Chambers-Holding-Sead
    Elneny
    Mkhi-AMN
Nelson-Nketiah-Iwobi(Buy Sancho from BvB! C’Mon Sven!!!!)

While not being 22 star studded world class champions I do feel it would be good enough in 1st team quality and depth to at least get 4th, it would give youth a chance to prove to the new boss that they are ready and it would be a team with one eye on the next few years…

  8. If we sign Soyuncu and Sokratis, I expect these two to be our first choice centre backs. Therefore:

    ——————–Leno——————–
    Bellerin—Soyuncu—Sokratis—Monreal
    ——————Torreira——————-
    ———-Ramsey——–AMN————–
    Mkhi————————————Ozil
    ——————–Auba——————–

Bench: Ospina, Lich/Kola, Kos/Mustafi, Laca, Xhaka, Iwobi, Elneny

I would have AMN in the middle over Xhaka and Elneny.

I also expect us to sell either Kos or Mustafi, Cech and Wilshere, and I would rather keep Laca on the bench as an effective direct striker sub for Auba than playing them both together and relying on Welbz as a sub.
