Mesut Ozil – Arsenal’s creative genius or expensive luxury?

Mesut Ozil was given a massive pay rise by Arsenal to extend his contract with the Gunners last season, but very few of our fans thought that he had a big influence on games and he was accused of going missing in big games, which Arsenal invariably ended up losing.

He last played for us against Atletico Madrid when we lost in the Europa League semi-final and he again was anonymous, but then we were told that he had been carrying around a back injury for some time. He returned to join the Germany team for the World Cup preparations and got injured again in a friendly but he was still looking lazy and lacklustre in training sessions and again has been criticized by the German press.

Coacch Joachim Loew has now announced the Arsenal midfielders fitness, but is still unsure whether he will play against Mexico. He said: “Mesut Özil this week completed two additional training sessions and can play but I will discuss the final line-up with the team this evening. There are two, three ideas in my head for the line-up.”

But Ozil’s team-mate Julian Draxler has no doubt’s that the Arsenal man will turn up when needed, despite the criticism. “All the noise about Mesut [Ozil] being subdued and not up to his best is not true and has been way over the top,” Draxler said. “The debate about his body language has been raging for a couple of years but he is an exceptional player.

“He has technical abilities that are unparalleled. He’s probably our most creative player. He will be there when we need him and he will deliver.”

  1. When facing weaker teams, such as Ludogorets, Everton and Gattuso’s AC Milan, Ozil was a creative genius. But when facing stronger teams, such as Atletico Madrid, Man United, Man City and Liverpool, Ozil was an expensive luxury

His loyal fans would confront me by saying that he didn’t play with good strikers, didn’t have good teammates and he was voted as German Player of the Year many times, bla bla bla. If he is really a world class no 10, he would have broken Atletico’s defense at the Emirates and would have performed more consistently in big matches

He has got his chances as a CAM with Podolski, Walcott, Giroud, Sanchez, Welbeck, Lacazette (one whole season) and Aubameyang (half season). If he is staying, I would like to see how he performs in deeper midfield position like Cazorla, because he seems to have lost his passion and seems unable to withstand the pressure in the front

    1. That’s actually a myth, his assists against the top six clubs is 20 percent of his total. He creates chances against better sides but obviously not as many as you would against a lowly team, that’s common sense. If you’re expecting the same kind of results well that’s not gonna happen often. It will happen at times though ie. Manu. Now with more clinical strikers I’m expecting Ozil’s brilliant chance creation stats to yield more positive results, because we’ve been a bit wasteful in games we find ourselves with allot of space in.

The problem might be that some people see Ozil finding things oh so easy at times, but then when there’s a team that makes us work for every inch and are denying us all the choice areas, for some strange reason people seem to expect the same Mesut Ozil???

    2. Then y should see how oziel playing when his time in madrid, he is pure assist machine, his playing behind striker and not tasked to defend, since that not his job, and he is best no 10 that time.
Wenger has ruined some of players, include oziel, when wenger put players playing in out position.
Wenger never built the team around any players, he should built team around oziel, and here interesting fact.
Since his @premierleague debut in 2013, Mesut Ozil has created more goalscoring chances (458) and provided more assists (49) than any other player in the competition. (Optajoe)
Since he made his league debut in August 2006, Mesut Ozil (1006) is the only player to have created over 1000 goalscoring chances within the big 5 European leagues. (OptaJoe)
And he is the fastest player in premier league history who reach 50 assist
      What a class

        1. Exactly-And the Topic headline is correct on both points.
Creative Genius-Set the team up and play Ozil in a free-floating No10 role and he will perform. Both Germany and RM recognised this and look how he has repaid them.
Expensive Luxury-Yes.That is Exactly what Mesut Ozil is.But only if he is asked to play outside his comfort zones.
We need Ozil to use his fitness to continually look for space to receive the ball.NOT chase back to defend. But his tracking back is often mis-interpreted.How often does Ozil receive the ball around our own penalty area?Very often is the answer. He is not back there having a cup of tea is he.Just being in a defensive shape is defending.Ozil can’t tackle. I don’t want him in too many 50/50 challenges.I want him on the ball in space so he can create.
Wenger failed Ozil.To that there is no doubt. Why have a Thoroughbred and expect him to work like a Pit Pony?

    3. Funny man , he created a lot of opportunities against Athletico , but that Jan Oblak did a de Gea on us….

      1. Unai Emery,
I’m getting fed up trying to explain simple facts to people on here,
So could you explain to them who Ozils manager was when the man created all the stats in the premier league that makes him the world class player he is?
Who was the manager that signed him!
What the player said about the manager who signed him?
I wonder what the fan base will say if Emery decides to sell him?
Probably blame the name of the man you identified in the first three questions, that’s what usually happens!!

    4. Needs a manager who knows how to motivate him and force him to challenge himself day in day out, he is very comfortable at our club so you get the sense he doesn’t feel the need to try as hard.

under wenger he plays whether he’s on a good or bad patch. Hope those days are over!!…but not to just slate the guy we got the most technically intelligent passer In the game it’s just how to maximize his effectiveness. That vision should slice defenses time after time but he needs space to do that, it’s the creation of space that made man city and KDB so deadly last season.

Here is hoping the new system will force him to step up. It’s time to start delivering with those wages or it wasn’t meant to be!!

I personally think he’s just another superstar who just needs a kick up the rear to get his game in order.

  2. Buying Ozil is like buying an android phone. Sure it sounded like a good idea at the time but it just doesn’t work properly. Every once in a while it does something amazing that an iPhone can’t do but then spends the rest of the time being useless.

But then you have paid so much for it that you have to stick with it in te hope it will get better. But it doesn’t as it’s just a piece of **** and the iphone is much better

    1. Lol, this is actually funny robin. But why does he play well for germany though. Lets get a balanced midfield around him first and if he still continues to play rubbish, we can then sell him off.

      1. iphone – Android …Telekinetic dude!!!!! There’s Ramsey, good honest Android for the average carefree person who just want to make a few phone calls and take some memorable pics on occasion. Then there’s Alexis, for the fashion conscious, accessory driven, which colour cover to buy next. Then Ozil, one of those rare breeds that is having no comparison to liken with because there’s no other similar style out there, Kanu was one, Zidane, ….Telekinetics.

  3. Depends on the players that are around him and the team we are playing. Playing ramsey together with ozil will only work when we are playing a weaker team at home because ramsey also neglects his defensive duties which means there will be a lot of pressure on torreira if he is our new DM. Also as good as torreira is, he is small which means we can forget about winning battles in the air as ramsey and ozil wouldn’t help with that either. One thing wenger was never able to achieve was BALANCE in the team, we need new box to box midfielder just as much as a new DM to free up ozil to playmake and create goals like he has in germany with kroos and khedira behind him. Those two as so solid and complete that ozil only has to worry about creating chances. We don’t have that in ramsey and xhaka, both have glaring weakness in their game. Ramsey is only concerned about scoring and creating chances while xhaka will sit back but he lacks the qualities to affect the game in the attacking and defensive areas, he is only good at passing and shooting which is not enough a deeplying midfielder. In conclusion , for ozil to reach his german form, we need a player like doucoure, a real box to box player with strength in attack and defence just like viera was for us (i am not saying he is as good as viera). Doucoure’s mobility, height and physicality will also complement torriera perfectly as the midfield two behind ozil. If we get a player like him, ozil will perform again in those tough matches. I dare anybody on this site to name a BALANCED starting eleven with ozil, ramsey and xhaka in midfield. This is something Emery must get right to be successful. My team would look like this based on the rumours; 4-2-3-1

    Aubameyang
    Martins ozil mhkitaryan
    Doucoure torreira
    Monreal soyuncu sokratis litchstiener

We can also play 4-3-3 or 4-1-4-1 with ramsey, ozil and one of doucore or torreira if we are at home against a very poor team, or play 4-4-2 with lacazette and aubameyang upfront.

    1. The most sensible line up…. But then, Xhaka’s contract renewal and Ramsey claimed to be the key player doesn’t add up

      1. Yeah, Emery focusing on those two players really concern me. They should both be squad players.

  4. If we don’t strengthen central midfield behind him then we are better off selling Ozil

If we get a quality box2box player and a quality defensive midfielder then we can get the best out of Ozil

    1. you people are blaming mesuit instead of praising him is it not his arrival that ends 10years trophiless drought?? arsenal has won 3 consecutives facup trophies including 3 community shields I think his a man to be honoured and praise he’s one of the best creative mieldfilder in the world I think.

  5. I hope that Emery encourages Ozil to be more selfish to run on goal and shoot more often. This would concern defenders more, putting them in two minds, rather than his tendency to look for the pass first.
This also applies to players like Xhaka and Emery, who appear to have been previously discouraged from shooting from outside the box.

  6. OZIL IS BOTH A CREATIVE GENIUS AND A LUXURY. THE KEY QUESTION IS HOW OFTEN IS HE THE GENIUS AND HOW OFTEN THE LUXURY? OVER HIS TIME AT Arsenal is it clear he has been more luxury than genius. He will be almost impossible to shift given the ludicrous salary he now earns. We will know by Christmas which of these two opposites qualities will be to the fore under Emery. If the lazy Ozil still persists, I think the club will find a way to shift him elsewhere, at least by seasons end, but it would be at a massive loss financially, since I see no other club paying even close to his salary. His supreme talent is not in doubt but his heart always has been. Or , more accurately, his lack of heart.

  7. I am an Ozil Hater.

Statistics is rather marvellous when doing maths, what the eye sees is not an illusion and can not be replicated by data.

A player of his quality should lead from the front, the EPL is now a high pace game that the 11 selected has to be committed to their job every day and not when they feel like, the player has to be able to manage his workload and not let it become a burden for others.

If i am saying Ozil is a LUXURY PLAYER it is not due to the Stats, but due to what i have SEEN in numerous matches, not what has been written down.

If you just turn up for a few days of work, we would all be fired. So pardon me if i want a hard working creative genius like Santi Cazorla in our team, rather the LUXURY CREATIVE GENIUS OZIL.
