New Arsenal manager rumours: Ancelotti, Rodgers and Vieira

There are going to be hundreds of rumours about who is going to replace Arsene Wenger as the next Arsenal manager, so we will start today with the three prime candidates from yesterday. Patrick Vieira was one of the hottest favourites yesterday but he has appeared to rule himself out for the next couple of years. “I spent nine years at Arsenal which makes the club really special for me,” the New York City boss said.

“But that is not enough to coach the team.”

“I am always flattered to hear my name linked with different football clubs. That is good for your ego but at the same time, I am happy here,”

“We will see what will happen in the next couple of years.”

So with Vieira out of the frame, the next two in the betting were Carlo Ancelotti, who could be a live contender given his excellent record and experience in the Premier League, and he hinted that he was available for the right job. He said: “I can say I would like to work again, but that depends on me,”

“If I find the right possibility, the right project, I would be delighted to continue.”

The ex-Chelsea coach also praised wenger for doing the best for Arsenal by standing down. “It’s a great decision, but I think it’s the decision Mr Wenger [made] with a lot of respect for the club and also I think the club have shown a lot of respect.” Ancelotti continued.

“That is right – Wenger did a fantastic job, and is doing a fantastic job with Arsenal because he is in the semi-final of the Europa League. Great respect and great honour to Arsene.”

So he would be a very popular choice with the fans, but I’m not sure if they are so keen on Brendan Rodgers. The Northern Irishman did well for a while at Liverpool, and did the treble with Celtic last season, going unbeaten, and is going for the treble again in this campaign. Rodger’s hasn’t made a comment, but his boss at Celtic, Dermot Desmond said: “He’s an outstanding person and we wouldn’t like him to leave, but we can’t force anybody to stay.

“Hopefully his love for the club and the set up there will enduce (sic) him to stay at Celtic.”

When asked if he would allow Arsenal to speak to Rodgers, Desmond added: “Absolutely. I don’t think you can put handcuffs on anybody if they want to go to a club as good as Arsenal.

“But it will be Brendan’s decision and Brendan’s decision only.”

So there are two big possibilities. Let’s see who are the next people to be linked with the job?

  1. Double no thanks, stay at Celtic it’s worked great for BR and the club.
    Read we had Allegri interested last Summer but stan offered Wenger 2 year deal.

    Hopefully rekindle that fire and get him in here. We need a guy like Max to go against Pep, Jose, Klopp. Plus he did the spuds quite nicely.

    We have talent in squad; with new GK and CB he can organize defense and get us trading punches with top clubs again.

    1. Thank you very much for saying that. I watched soccer Saturday today and heard all of them say only few players are good enough to be in the team. They will rather have Wilshere instead of Elneny even though Wilshere is never fit. An average player is better than an unfit one, Kos is not a good player etc and how our next manger should be Brendon Rogers. (The same men that said we should have bought Joe Hart as our keeper imagine) we don’t want Brendon, a very good manger that can compete at the highest level. We should not go backwards from where we are now.

      1. I am sick and tired of the bias towards English players that seems to pervade the media. Wilshere was almost ushered out of Arsenal by the media (particularly Adrian Durham of talkSPORT) for his own good as he was seen as always injured at Arsenal and was wasting his talents. Well, he did go to Bournemouth and didn’t score any goals, no assists and eventually was only used as a sub before getting injured.

        Back at Arsenal, Wilshere’s last half a dozen games have been shocking and jet all I hear is he plays with passion and heart. I’d rather Wilshere played will skill and technique than give the ball away on numerous occasions whilst committing fouls. If I had to choose between Wilshere and Elneny, I’d choose Elneny every time.

  2. Joachim Lowe…. The guy at Monaco…. Or like Podolski said, let’s get a coach from Germany.

    1. The new guy would most likely be Thomas Tuchel

      But I want to see Enrique, Arteta, Pellegrini, Sarri or Jardim

      1. Ornstein has said Tuchel is off to PSG and a lot of other sources have as well. Think we’ve missed out on him.

      2. Arteta? Arteta? I will rather it be Thierry Henry. You want Arteta to go against the likes of pep, Jose, Conte, Pot, Please no experiments

  3. I wonder how our players will react should the new manager do the crazy thing of actually reviewing their performances?

    1. Many of them are below par, and got away easy under Wenger. Even when they were bad, Wenger refused to single them out.

      1. very true. AW always took the blame when these players would let him down. Somewhat admirable, but it also has led to many of these players becoming complacent. Hope this next guy will simply tell them they are out if they aren’t going to perform.

  4. My first choice would be Allegri from Juventus for his tactical nous, second choice would be Simeone from Atletico for his organisation and toughness. I don’t think Tuchel has any chance after his run in with”Diamond Eye” at Dortmund. Too soon for the likes of Henry or Vieira although I’d to see a role in the club for one or even both of them with DB10 to take over the youngsters. I know, living in a dream world.

      1. Agreed with Kenny, they have to be the stand out two. Would love to know whom the players are hoping for.

  5. The only potential manager that I am diametrically opposed to is Brendan Rodgers. I will never forgive or forget what he said when Arsenal tried to buy Suarez whilst he was his manager. He said words to the affect of, over his dead body would he let Suarez go to Arsenal. Well, over my dead body will I welcome Brendan Rodgers to Arsenal as our next manager.

    Having said that my favourite replacement would be Thomas Tuchel. However I would be very happy with Allegri, Anchelotti and Enrique. I am not a huge fan of Low and Simeone and Low.

    1. Why Tuchel?, allot of people seem to rate him but what has he ever done. He fell out with the person they called diamond eye, diamond eye!, you’d think with a name like that he’d be someone you want feeling very welcomed. Then the players had a relationship with him (DE), he (Tuchel) acts like a bully in high school, telling him (DE) who he can and cannot speak with, not even aloud inside if Tuchel is there too. Honestly, does this sound like someone you’d want pulling strings & running things. Only positive thing I can think of, that he’s a German (lingo) and quite possibly plays attacking football. They’re other Germans I’d prefer over this dude. Unless the spat between himself and diamond eye was a fabrication/intentional, and that was us tapping the both of them up. Because the only way in the world it seemed for us to get Mislintat was if that very thing happened. But that’s just me being silly. I would like to know why people have him down as top class material though, maybe I’m wrong, if that’s the case then very well done, nicely intuitive.

      If it is gonna be an ex player, PV is the only choice for me. But I fear Henry has a great shot thank’s to his relationship with Josh K. Allegri has the pedigree, but not sure if he speaks English and we don’t have many Italian speaking personnel at all. [Simeone – Allegri – Conte – Zidane – Vieira – Ancelotti] but I reckon only three of them should be on our shortlist.

      1. Forgot Sarri, he plays nice football a bit open but some fans like that. Napoli have a few players I wouldn’t following him if that was the case.

      2. It is potty to even consider our ex-players , merely because they were popular when playing here. If they have not the managerial pedigree – and they don’t – forget them! Viera, Henry, Bergkamp, Arteta, all not ready and daft choices at our level. If the new man wishes to bring one of them in as a coach, then fine. But NOT as manager. Playing and managing at top level are completely different skills.

        1. Totally agree jon fox.
          Also again Thomas Tuchel knocked back Bayern Munchen and the word on the street is he’s already signed with PSG for next season.

    2. “Well,over my dead body will I welcome Brendan Rodgers to Arsenal”

      The difference is we don’t have a choice. As manager he had the power to stop Suarez coming to Arsenal. As a fan you can have a preference of who you want for the next manager but you have no control over who we get.

      If you’re expecting a top quality manager to come in you’re going to be disappointed. The top managers aren’t available.

      I just hope we don’t end up with someone like Moyes. Lol

        1. Ancellotti for starters!
          Arsenal is very attractive to top managers because:
          i) loyalty shown to previous managers (not like Chelsea);
          ii) competive salary;
          iii) great stadium;
          iv) great training facilities;
          v) very good support staff (scouting, contracts);
          vi) very good youth academy; and
          vii) very patient fans in the past.

  6. I’d rather have Rafael Benitez, much better than Brendan Rodgers. I hope Wenger goes and managers another team even, then we will really see if it was him holding Arsenal back or the board. He might even return to Monaco. I know there will be plenty of teams that are would want his signature on the dotted line.

  7. Historically, the first person who enters by stepping into a big mans shoes, it usually ends up miss. It can be hit or miss, but I think when it’s a huge character, it’s more often a miss. We all want someone to come in and do what Conte did, he took a tenth place team and ran with it. No one gave him a chance that season, that may have went in his favor. It’s the same now with us, people are saying it’s gonna take x amount of time just for him to get the players that he wants. We need to find a manager that knows how to demand the best from what he has at his disposal. It’s all well and good, saying look he done this in transfer market and he made it this far in Europe. But does he inspire his players, are our PL2 winning youngsters in good hands. our academy even though we loaned most of the best ones, are after beating money bad city & utd, as well as ..gives youth a chance Klopp ..to the league title in their fist season back. Either first or second I think it’s the first though. They’re one down two more to go, flying. So we weren’t as clueless back there as allot of fans made out.

    1. One big difference is that the squad Conte inherited, was superior to the current Arsenal one.

  8. I’m not convinced with Tuchel, he would get a similar team here that he did in Dortmund, and he didn’t make any major impact with that Dortmund side either.

  9. Jack Wilshere thanking Wenger for faith in him when no one did, and they guy never paid the manager back with that faith. He is the same if not worse player than when he was young.

      1. Guys talent and injury is not like you have ten quid in your pocket and you chose only to spend five quid, I’m sure most players specialy JW would love to play better then he has lately and I’m sure he would agree with all of you that he has been poor lately and I put that down to him trying to get in to the Englans side in the WC and his trying too hard, he was playing great before Christmas so he has the talent but no confidence atm, I do think his time is up at Arsenal he, I think he can do well at Crystal Palace if palace keep Zaha

        1. Aw!!! I don’t want him to go to Crystal Palace at all. I want him to stay and improve. My problem with the pundits is that they are not fair at all to other players in Arsenal that play the same position as Wilshere. They should put aside biases and give each player the credits they deserve. Going to World Cup should not be his only main focus.

    1. he’ll be packing his bags along with the manager. Silly not to take the contract that was offered to him. Good luck to him on joining a top club that will tolerate his injury record and give him high wages. Arsenal hierarchy finally showing some backbone lately!

      1. Well said. From his own personal point of view, Wilshere will regret not signing the contract. No top club will touch him IMO and if he gets more money it will only be on ashort contract wih a mid table or lower team. Despite being a true Gooner , his career has been a huge disappointment, sadly. Who thought, when he was 16 , that ten years later he would be on the way down! But he soon will be.

  10. The successor to Arsene Wenger as the new Gunners manager will not be easy to find despite that there are so many qualified candidates around and are available to choose from. If the Arsenal way of playing the game is to continue and be improved upon to make Arsenal an out and true contenders to win the Premier League next season, and also win the CL too if Arsenal win the Europa League Cup this season is a task for the Arsenal hierarchy to accomplish by appointing the right manager who can do these 2 jobs successfully for Arsenal in his 1st season at the club.

    There is no gainsaying in appointing a new Arsenal manager to succeed Mr Wenger but who will not continue in his legacy of Arsenal playing beautiful and tantalizing attacking football I.e. the Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal way of playing. But continue in that way and add the cutting edge of winning the PL & the CL Titles to it. For, winning the PL and the CL Tittles should become the paramount ask of the new Arsenal manager by the Arsenal board and the Arsenal fan base to answer with wins in his 1st season at the club.

    I believe the new Arsenal manager so appointed will be supported by the Arsenal board with funds necessary for him to do 2 – 3 new top quality player signings in the summer to replace Per Mertasacker, Santi Cazorla and possibly Koscielny. And an agreement between the new Arsenal manager and the Arsenal board MUST be reach to make him retaining the whole of the Arsenal PL 2 team that recently won the PL 2 division 1 Title this season. So that the team will not be disbanded by the new Arsenal manager but retained to draw the abundant talents that abounds in the team to use them in the senior Arsenal team for an ehanced development of the special talents in the squad such as: Eddie Nketiah, Reiss Nelson, Joe Willock, Dragomir and others to fully developed them to become senior Gunners for Arsenal within the shortest possible time. For, youth development at Arsenal academy school is one of the legacies Mr Arsene Wenger, the departing Arsenal manager will be leaving behind which should be kept alive to live on.

  11. In the meantime, Oxlade Chamberlain just created another beautiful through ball for Mo Salah again

    I wish one of our current midfielders can produce such through balls consistently like him

      1. There were times when Ox played as a wingback and Iwobi wide.

        That is just a joke and why we are 6th.

    1. gotanidea I’m suprised you think we don’t have quality creative midd field, I beg to desagree we have the second best midfield in the EPL after City, our problems are further back starting with a goal keeper which has been realy realy poor for the last calendar year, we need to review all our defenders and get rid of Bold

      1. our midfield is not even close to second best. Xhaka and Elneny would not start for any other top 6 team, Ramsey is good, but can be inconsistent, Ozil also inconsistent. City, Spurs, Liverpool, and even United (at least on paper) have far more balanced midfield than ours. If Ozil is not creating chances our midfield produces next to nothing. Lacazette went through a terrible goal drought partly because we were only creating one decent chance at best for him every game. And let’s not forget how bad Xhaka is at the defensive side of the game where virtually everyone can just skip past him. Second best in league is not far too kind. It’s near the same level as Chelsea’s who at least have Kante.

        1. I fail to say offensive midfielders, Ozil , Ramsy, Mkhi these three are all amazing players under the right manager

          1. I was tring to point out that we have great assist players and now we have the best strikers since RVP, we don’t need to start from front we need to change our defensive mentality and some players starting from GK, once you sort out your defence your offence will improve as well

            1. RSH and Tas, don’t sweat too much over how our player’ playing abilities and positionings. Wenger didn’t understand what to do with the team sometimes and that is why different players end up playing different positions. We are going to have a new manger and I hope and pray he brings out the best from all these players. Wenger couldn’t make us play good consistent football, so now he is on his way out!!

              1. this is true. Hopefully we see some of these players step it up and show what they are truly capable of.

  12. I have waited an eternity for this thread. Lots of rumour threads but finally one about managers

  13. Ancelotti? No.
    Rodgers? Absolutely never.
    Vieira/Henry/Arteta? Not yet but possibly yes as a number 2.
    Tuchel? I like him but think he is PSG bound.
    Allegri? Yes please.
    Jardim? Yes.
    Sari? Yes.
    Enrique? Yes
    Lowe? No.
    Simeone? Yes.

  14. Definitely not Vieira, Henry or Arteta I don’t even know why Arteta is being mooted he’s done nothing he’s never managed a team and Arsenal is not a club to be your first managerial role! We need a man who can bring steel to this team and cut out this backwards and sidewards passing and most importantly fix our awful defence! I’m over the moon Wenger is going but anxious to see what happens next this arsenal board and owner are a bunch of clowns I just hope and pray they finally get something right! Not too sure about Enrique I’d much rather allegri ancellotti or Jardim let’s hope whoever it is he ditches the suit and the club coat can’t be doing with a Wenger clone ?

  15. Does anyone rate Fatih Terim as our manager he seames to always do the job where ever he goes with little money and talented players given to him

  16. Marizio Sarri or Luis Enrique please.

    My Dad said this morning, (whilst trying to wind Me up) “ah so that’s why Rafa has been waiting around at Newcastle so long!”

  17. @johnwick
    Arteta is the less get someone who we can micro manage and won’t rock the boat type appointment.
    I fear well a point a puppet to the gazidis and kroenke rather than a fiercely experiences winner who can getting us winning whilst left alone to their own devices.

    No puppet please, jedi master needed!

  18. Ps I wouldn’t mind ancelotti to come in for one season on a short term contract or interim manager status.
    But that must be only so we can find the right younger candidate to take us forward.
    Saying this though it would be suprise me but post Wenger we may follow suit with other pl clubs at last where no performance = bye bye!
