Official! At last Sokratis is an Arsenal player

As I reported this morning the Dortmund defender Sokratis has finally been announced officially by the Gunners. The official Arsenal website has just announced…..

Greek international Sokratis Papastathopoulos has joined us on a long-term contract for an undisclosed fee.

The 30-year-old arrives from Borussia Dortmund, where he won two Bundesliga titles and one German Cup. The hugely-experienced defender lists Werder Bremen, AC Milan, Genoa and AEK Athens among his previous clubs.

Sokratis, who will wear the No 5 shirt for us, also has vast experience on the international stage, making 79 appearances for Greece.

This deal is subject to the completion of regulatory processes.

Well I dont know how long a “long-term” contract for a 30 year-old is, but that is another big change from the Wenger years….

And, after signing Stephan Lichtsteiner, who is the captain of Switzerland, we have now got the vice-captain of Greece. This is all good for the confidence in the dressing room. So here is a transcript of Sokratis’ first ever interview as an Arsenal player…..

Sokratis, welcome to Arsenal. How does it feel to be an Arsenal player?
I feel very good. It’s my first day here, everything is special. It’s a beautiful moment and I’m very happy that I will be here for the next years.

What appeals to you most about the club and what are your memories of Arsenal over the years?
Arsenal is one of the three biggest teams in the Premier League and one very big club. It has a lot of fans and a very big history. Like I said before, I’m very happy that for the next years I will be here to help the team.

Which of our players have you admired most?
A lot. Vieira, Henry, Pires also. It’s a lot of players. Every year, every two years, this team has a lot of players that write a big history here.

Of course you’re joined here by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. What have they said to you about the club?
I spoke [to them] a lot times. They said to me the best things about this club, that it is one big family and of course they also called me not every day but a lot of times telling me to come here.

You all joined Dortmund in the same year, 2013. Is it a bit strange to be at a different club with them again?
Yes it’s a little bit [strange] but it’s also very beautiful that I’ve come to one team but I also have two players who I was together with for a lot of years. I know them both very well and I’m very happy.

What about your playing style? How would you describe the way that you defend?
I’m a normal defender who likes to defend. I like that my team doesn’t [concede] goals and I like the zero in the defence of course. I will do everything to help achieve these goals.

Your former manager at Dortmund, Thomas Tuchel, said you’re “a little bit obsessed with defending” and that you “want to protect the goal-line no matter what”. What’s your reaction to that? Do you agree?
Yes, of course. Of course I agree. I think that a defender first has to defend, to protect the goal, and then after if he can help in front a little bit for the game, then it’s good. But first of all, he has to defend.

You’re the Greek vice-captain and you were the Dortmund vice-captain. How would you describe your leadership style?
Of course now I also have the experience. Whatever happens in the team, in the national team but also in my last club, I was there to help a lot of players, and also when they asked me [about things] on and off the pitch. When they asked me some things, I was there every time. I think this is leadership, but the leader has to be first on the pitch and last off it too.

That sounds like a very good signing to me! What do you think?

  1. I hope he makes the grade and that him signing kinda helps out our younger CB’s as its obvious they need a better role model than the previous lot we had

  2. Really? The three joined Dortmund the same year and have now joined Arsenal the same year… hmm
I just hope for a wonderful future for the Club

    Welcome!!!

  3. Arsenal become Dortmund 2.0

Maybe Mislintat saw the prospect of having a solid defense, by using Sokratis and Mavropanos in the back

I have got a strong feeling that Mustafi or Koscielny would go

    1. Aaron Ramsey has agreed to sign a new long term contract extension with us. He will become the club’s 2nd highest earner behind Ozil. He is seen by Emery as the player team should be built around. Its now down to the minor details which will be sorted by Hiss Fahmy.

      Ramsey contract details:
      5 years
      200k p/w base
20k extra for each goal or assist
      No release clause

This may be good news to some but bad news to others but please support him as he’s an Arsenal player.

Kelechi Nwakali on loan to Porto is a done deal.He will join them for the 2018/2019 season.
Rob Holding will be going on loan and it’s looking likely Iwobi will be too.

Soyuncu will also come in to replace Mustafi who is currently on sale.Hoping we can get around £20m-£25m for him but we will include terms in the deal that will help us recoup close to what we bought him for.

                  1. RHS, I think we have to hold our judgement of Ozil to see how he performs this season under Unai Emery, along side a decent DM hopefully Torreira, a solid defense behind him and providing scoring opportunities for intelligent forwards like Aubameyang and Lacazette.
I personally would like Ozil to be more selfish and have the option of surging into the box and taking shots on goal. He has excellent finishing technique and this would put the defense in two minds, as to whether he will pass or shoot.
Hopefully if Arsenal fans show support on his return, Ozil will respond positively and rise above the criticism.

  4. i like sokratis.
    no nonsense and very aggressive.

a pairing of sokratis and a calm defender like koscienly will be great.

    Leno

    bellerin.. sokratis… koscienly(c) … monreal
    xhaka…..toreirra…..ramsey(vc)
    mkhitaryan…aubameyang..ozil.

    next season i see a 4-3-3.

chambers will play until koscienly is fit.

    simple team will hardworking players.
remove ozil and you have a pressing team.90 mins.
    non stop.

  5. Sokratis, Papa one solver of defensive problems for arsenal. welcome to one big family papa solution

  6. Welcome to our great club. For some reason I like the fact that he comes with little expectation unlike some of recent flops …I wish him all the best cus God know he needs it

  7. gooners feeling happy over a mustafi 2.0.
    average cb at 30
cant imagine how he will cope with pacy english style

    1. But Per Mertesacker coped pretty well with the pace. I believe slightly faster Sokratis will manage

  8. Well well well!!! There you have it Japan 2-0
For those of you slating Pappas have you seen the world class vertoghen & Ramos & boateng & hummels ? A few dumb arsenal fans have been so bewitched into believing arsenal never do things right.well that’s your problem if you fall into that category,as for me I’m having the summer of my life as an arsenal fan.%#$$#### no Wenger, new signings, new Hungary manager ( with emphasis on hardwork and good football) new structure hmmphhh!! C.O.Y.G #EMERYARMY #shaprapragooners!!

    1. That is why they say wait till the end.

Now Who won it for belgium ? Ex spurs man chadli.

Yes they are our bitter rivals , but they have beem doing well for the past 2 -3 seasons.
Accepting enemy’s progress only gives you that extra motivation to do better. It is always gracefull when we accept our defeat(though temporarily i.e. for 2-3 seasons at present) and act on it to not repeat it.
This is when we need to behave like humans than those cannibals whom we call our ancestors.

  9. What is a long-term contract? 5 years? 6? Do we really want to keep a player in his 30s on a long-term contract? Oh well a defender! Heaven knows we need those badly.

  10. Ramsey/Torriera/Xhaka midfield is about to make all the doubters look silly. Emery knows what he’s doing. Love all the ramsey hate. didnt hear much of that when he was winning us FA Cups. People expect him to be world class which nobody has ever claimed he was, but he’s a great player that has a lot of positive attributes and has delivered in big moments. Unlike Ozil, unlike Wilshere who just live off of reputation alone. Just like Giroud, if we lost Ramsey he’d be missed.

    1. It’s funny you mention we miss Giroud.Since January Arsenal scored the most premiere league goals bar Citeh.January was when we SOLD Giroud and BOUGHT Aubamayang.
Hardly set the world alight at Chelski since he moved there.
Just thought I would mention this

      1. If we had Giroud we would’ve had a much better chance of beating Atletico. We had a lot of games we missed having a target man on the pitch. Giroud was also preferred to Morata at Chelsea and his performances were good enough to get him into WC squad. Giroud would still be a fantastic option to have off the bench.

  11. As a wise man once said:

    I bomb atomically
    Sokratis, philosophies and hypotheses
Can’t define how I be dropping these mockeries

  12. as we know that exprience is the best teacher, arsenal lacked that,so emery will rub our tear.look arsenal with socratis, mustafi, torriera, maketerian, ramezy,,ozil, abamiyang, laccazate, ospina .arsenal will be 2hot.
