Official teams and Preview of Arsenal v Liverpool

The biggest surprise for me in Arsene Wenger´s team selection for the game between Arsenal and top four rivals Liverpool today is not that both Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla will start, but that Per Mertesacker is preferred to the Brazilian Gabriel in the centre of our defence.

With the pace and trickery of Raheem Sterling and Phillipe Coutinho to deal with, I hope that the boss is right to opt for our giant German´s Premier League experience and reading of the game over the pace and tigerish defending of our January transfer signing.

Danny Welbeck is fit enough for the bench and I would have expected him to start but Wenger has gone for Ozil in the wide forward role, with Cazorla in the number 10 position, so with Alexis on the other side of the in form Giroud, there is plenty of pace and guile in our attack and with Liverpool having to replace the suspended Skrtel with the former Gunner Kolo Toure, we should give them plenty of problems.

Lallana has not recovered and Sturridge is only fit enough for the bench so with Ramsey and Coquelin to protect our own back four, you would expect Arsenal to be too strong for the visitors, but nothing is certain and the players need to be on their toes from the start.

The keeper situation is a bit of a worry, with young Matt Macey on the bench as Martinez has been loaned out and Szczesny….who knows? Let´s just hope nothing happens to Ospina and that Arsenal win of course.

  2. Well i expected the midfield 3 of cazorla rambo and Coq as we need to press and defensively solid. Am a little surprised to see Per starting especially as he liverpool are short in height and fast at pace. Well I hope we have no regrets. I didnt just expect to see per starting at Cb in this game. liverpool don’t have Andy CAROLL.

    Come on Arsene we are playing against sterling coutinho and markovish. Anyways all the best to the team. come on arsenal.

  4. Come on Per Just proof me wrong. Just go out there and proof me wrong. Sterling vs per is one way traffic. Coq please dont let coutinho send in any balls in behind. defend well as a team.

    I want to see a great Ozil playing with freedom and enjoying himself.

  6. I feel like this is more of a test from wenger to see if per is still capable in big game situations. Thought we might have gone with more pace as liverpool like to attack in numbers and we could exploit that on the counter but gonna have to wait and see how it goes I guess. COYG!

  9. Honestly, every single time BT Sport show our games ‘if (opposition striker) isolates Mertesacker they can get in behind and cause problems’. How often does it actually happen? Very rarely. Come up with a new line already… Not confident with Mertesacker vs Sterling, but Koscielny normally pockets quick strikers, so hopefully he will today.

  11. Macey??! Martsacker?! I hope Martsacker proves my fears to be unjustified but I would have preferred Gabriel to deal with Liverpool’s pace and counter attacks. Still I believe in a 4-2 win in our favor

  51. Am not watching this game but I understand Ramsey is playing on the right and making assists. Can someone please explain the tactics Arsene is employing in this game?

    1. Pressing Liverpool high and hit them on the break when they lose the ball in attacking positions.

  64. Testament to our season that we’re 3-0 up at half time and I’m still not too confident we’ll win. Even this great run of form we’re on hasnt repaired the damage of those early season results.
