Oh My Lord! Should Arsene Wenger get a knighthood?

Arsene Wenger survived 22 years as Arsenal manager and gave countless joy to millions of Gooners all over the world as he led the Gunners to glory, and especially when he led Arsenal to a full season without losing a game.

Wenger was awarded an honorary OBE in 2003 for his contribution to British football but now the Tory MP Huw Merriman has proposed in Parliament that Wenger should now given a knighthood, not just for his career at Arsenal, but also as an example that immigrants can also be very successful in the UK.

Merriman said: “It should be no surprise that we’ve had a manager that’s come in from abroad, who we’ve embraced as one of our own and has taught us, and I would say he’s the best example of successful immigration in this country.

“I would like to hope that it’s thanks to him that immigration is widely proclaimed as doing fantastic things for this country.

“I’m proud that Arsene Wenger and the club that he built was built and washes its own face with the highest matchday revenue in the world and not, as he infamously put it, via financial doping from wealthy individuals based in countries with dubious records on human rights and worse.

“It’s my belief that it’s Arsene Wenger’s commitment to the core values of British sport and society which have caused me to apply for this debate….”

He was also supported by the Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn who has always been an Arsenal and Wenger fan, who told the House: “I’ve never forgotten taking a very large group of primary school children to Arsenal stadium one evening, and Arsene Wenger giving them a very interesting talk about how he learned English, how they should all learn foreign languages in order to create a more generous and more peaceful world.

“He has a wonderful ability to communicate with people of all ages and all footballing abilities.”

Although many of us have campaigned to get Wenger removed from his post at Arsenal, we cannot deny his achievements over his long and successful tenure at our club, so should we all support this motion to give him a knighthood in the next Honours list?

  1. Okay Ooooo
    Merci Arsene
Hope To See A New Manager In The Next Few Days.
I Dont Care If It Is V Or A
Hope To See Us Sign Good Players Before The Wc Kick Off

  2. As a human we all know he lived the perfect life, that’s why the whole world keeps praising him for his influence. I hope he gets it, he deserves it.
Good luck wherever he decides to go next.

    1. Yeah he cheated in his wife. Classy bloke. Deserve a a knighthood for what??? Because the stubborn old man took years to be forced out. Perfect life? After his wife and kids left what else would be have been doing

  3. Can’t believe the stick the media gave him as a manager, hated by Mike Riley and his cronies at the PGMOL, disliked by the FA with how many times he was fined for speaking his mind and then suddenly when he decides to quit these hypocrites are falling over each other trying to compliment him. Political move on behalf of immigrants in this country. Remember he was paid extremely well for doing a decent job. I think that is enough.

    1. Can we all have Knighthoods for having to endure the mediocrity over the past few seasons?

  4. The way honours are handed out these day (to any old Tom, Dick or Harry) for basically doing a “job” they love doing, and in some/lot of cases being paid by the British tax payer to do their “job”, then yes, he definitely deserves a knighthood, at least the Great British tax payer didn’t fund him.

  5. Wenger “hood” winked the club
    into paying him 7m salary
for 14 years (98 million) to run a team
full of over paid under performing weaklings.
His teams were highly skilled at passing the ball
sideways and backwards a million times every game (see Arteta highlights on youtube )
and sending the Emirates crowd to sleep by the 15 minute mark
which is why the stadium became known as the library.
The only blade passing over Wenger’s shoulders
should be that of the guillotine.
Kroenke Gazidiz and Arteta should be the next in line.
    Let the heads roll.
    Tricoteuses altogether now.
    “Knit one, pearl one chop one” 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

  6. Well he was a socialist in his field of failure so don’t see why he should not be knighted

      1. Failure

        Noun

        1) Inability to do ones own jacket zip
“Arsene on a cold night on the bench is doomed for failure”

  7. I thought AW was given the equivalent of a knighthood around the time Arsenal moved to Emirates – only being a foreign national he is not allowed to actually use the ‘Sir’ prefix?

    1. I think they took it back after his team was 4-0 up against Newcastle and ended up drawing

  8. I think Arsene Wenger is EXACTLY the sort of wide thinking, anti prejudice and pro world wide family humanity type of man who SHOULD be knighted. I put aside completely my ranking of him as our manager, in his last decade which was very poor, IMO. But a knighthood is very well deserved for his wider achievements on behalf of the international brotherhood of man and football fans everywhere. There is a very good reason he received that unexpected ovation from Huddersfield and Leiceter fans. They recognise human class. I WOULD HOPE WE GOONERS ALL DO TOO, EVEN THOSE WHO, LIKE ME, CRAVED HIS DEPARTURE AND SAID SO LOUDLY AND LONG.

    1. @ Jon Fox…you are a class. I did not see your posting ….and I just posted the one below:

Wenger becomes Knighted. More than deserved. It ONLY on this forum you see people who have problems with that. Even at Hudersfield….the honour and accolades were simply overwhelming. Regardless – He has achieved in style. You can’t do anything about those records; they will speak and they will stay and the man will be remembered for it for EVER.
Anyways, not sure the government takes input from the platform here. And there certainly more coming Wenger’s way.

    2. Agree
He may have become mediocre but he was different. He had his failings but I think the refs hated him too, he may have won more had he been british

  10. He should be knighted by none other than his King Kroenke… he had saved his ass.

But not any more, we are going to kick his next if we found out who is the real ass.

    1. One day you will be reminded you dont own Arsenal and you don’t own Kroenke’s money invested. You will be given the option to go support another club…because certain things may not change.

      1. He owns his investment but he don’t own the club, mind you. Neither you have any self entitled right to ask others for change of club.

        1. You are sounding like you determine who stays and who goes….that doesnt sound right to me mate.

      2. I said somewhere that from the look of things we Arsenal fans may have to reconsider our loyalty to our beloved club.
