Ozil not off to Man Utd in January but Wenger waiting for offers on Alexis

As usual, Arsene Wenger is always asked in his pregame Arsenal press conference about whether Mesut Ozil or Alexis Sanchez would be up for sale in the January transfer window (yawn!) but this time he actually gave us a little information. For starters he says that the rumours about Jose Mourinho wanting Ozil was just made-up by the media and the German will definitely be at the Emirates until the end of this season.

When he was asked if Ozil was close to signing a new contract, he replied: “How close? I don’t know how close,”

“We have never been approached by Man United anyway so I don’t see why that came up. That is something that has been created. [He’ll stay] until the end of the season, the rest is open.”

But when he was then asked about Alexis Sanchez, he wasn’t quite so certain, and implied that he would wait and see if he was given any reasonable offers before deciding whether to sell or not. “They will all stay,” he said. It’s very difficult for me to tell you as I will analyse every case individually. My wish and my desire is that everybody stays. If you come in and tell me ‘I will offer you this for this player’ I will tell you yes or no.”

Is that his way of letting other clubs know that he would be willing to sell the Chilean if a reasonable offer comes in?

  1. So sick of wengers cryptic responses, and his little dig at man City saying they have petrol and ideas as if everything other than his decisions are to blame for the clubs decline. I came across this article today about Kim kallstrom’s transfer to us a few years back https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/5145582/arsenal-kim-kallstrom-wenger-retire/amp/
Read what wenger said as he made his decision on the transfer….. Transfer window closes in a few hours so it’s you or no one….. Unbelievable, that attitude is exactly why we are languishing in 7th

  2. We all knew Ozil was not going to agree to go anywhere in January as he goes to Man U for free at the end of the season with a massive salary. Almost certainly the same with Sanchez and Man City.

    1. Yes, I predict they both will stay till the end of this season to chase bigger offers. Maybe Turan would come to Arsenal in January though.

    2. Ozil yes, but Alexis might get offers. He is not getting younger, performances have been pretty inconsistent, and Man City have unexpectedly found gems in Raheem and Sane for wide positions, so why will they take Alexis? I doubt even they wont take him on free for his wage demands. Pep is going young, and their academy prospects are really good, up there with PSG/Real. Rather a team like Inter(leading Seria A unexpectedly, can pay wages), Milan(have deep pockets), may be Athletico Madrid(wont pay too high wages, but have lot of money saved from transfers, and Grizz to leave) will come for him in January with 20-30m and Wenger will sell. These clubs look exciting prospect for Alexis, especially Inter. I dont expect PSG/Bayern/Real to come for him.

  3. Maybe teams like Real Madrid or Man U might want alexis in January. I don’t see why teams like man city will need alexis, they are comfrotably ahead and alexis isn’t really playing that well this season. Plus, he is protentially toxic to the team chemistry.

  4. Alexis is playing so badly at the moment, which big club would take the risk? He’s not doing himself any favours if he is looking for a move, so maybe he will go for a free at the end of the season. I think the same would apply to Ozil. A great pity but what can we expect with the way the club is run, apathy doesn’t describe it, paralysis does. Roll on 2019!!

  5. Earlier everyone wanted alexis to stay and ozil to leave. But based on the recent performances,it looks like there is some sort of a ROLE REVERSAL going on here…

    1. It’s more the attitude Alexis has shown as well as that city move he wanted. Ozil has kept quite though it all and he tweets like a Gooner, he’s more respectful even though both are in similar circumstance. We might hate it when Ozil goes missing or ducks from challenges but his creativity was never in doubt. Alexis is the more dangerous player and with motivation he can be one of the deadliest around. People forget too quickly, not long ago Alexis was both our creative force and our goal getter. I have changes my mind though, I’d like Ozil to stay, but only if we’re gonna look into acquiring powerful new recruits at CM and CB.

  6. Sanchez who has played well in only one match this season(v Everton) should have been sold for £50 m during the last transfer window. Unfortunately we have a weak Board which fails to recognise the fact that Wenger is incompetent in all aspects of management including selection, tactics and recruitment. We will be lucky to get £20 m for Sanches before his contract expires. Effectively this means that £20/30m has been flushed down the drain. Added to the £70m wasted on average players like Xhaka and Mustafi is it any wonder fans are completely frustrated by the way this great club is currently being run.

    1. I love it how everyone was applauding Wenger in the summer for sticking to his guns and not selling Alexis, yet now when he’s playing badly, people are complaining why we didn’t sell him earlier. The worst fanbase out there by a country mile. And the ficklest of fans.

  7. Maybe you missed something during the transfer period. The man we all hate so much actually want Alexis gone but want a replacement before that happened. That why we were linked with Lemar all TS but board made no money available until arsenal started selling players. That is mostly on the board.

  8. I think Wenger is , in his own “cover my own back” typical manner, using double speak, at which he is a master, trying to offload SANCHEZ. Sanchez is clearly playing only for his own self, not the team, and has done so all season long. Let us be totally honest, even when he was a firm fan favourite of pretty much all of us, he was the most selfish player we have had in years, constantly losing possession. We put up with this fault as his energy and goals drove the team on,. But that is now history and will not ever return. Today he is a total waste of a huge and unwarranted salary and should be sold in January for whatever we can get, Further to this, it should not matter one jot to us where he goes. ANYONE WHO WILL AND CAN PAY HIS HUGE SALARY DEMANDS, could equally well get a better and more influential star in his place, so it could be said , he would hold City(for instance) back, since currently they do NOT give away possession cheaply, as he does. That he has become demotivated is of course , over his career with us, entirely down to Wengers ineptitude and lack of forward planning. In fact , forward planning and Wenger go together like Kippers and Custard, as we all know , through bitter experience. So yes, Sanchez out asap , but the real culprit, Wenger, will be harder to shift . But we MUST, if we ever want to challenge again for the title and CL.

  9. Where are all the fans who were calling for Ozil’s head earlier? I swear, 90% of the posters here wanted him gone, and were applauding Wenger’s decision for keeping Sanchez. WHERE ARE YOU NOW?!!! I said last season that Sanchez is cancer, and will only make things worse. I also said that we will miss Ozil a lot more if he decides to leave. Hate to say it, but I was right. It’s a lot easier to find a speedy winger who’s easily dispossessed (e.g. Walcott, Iwobi) than a quality number 10. When Ozil leaves we’ll be in big trouble. And please, don’t tell me that Jackie boy is gonna take his place ’cause it’s ridiculous to even put the two in the same sentence.

    1. Well I said at the time it was a bad decision to keep unhappy players as they are going to spread their unhappiness in the dressing room and what have we seen…………………… Obvious really apart from to the cancer that is Wenger and AKB’s such as yourself.
